A few years back I had the wonderful opportunity to view a lot of marvelous ceramics from the Moche civilization, which existed in northern Peru up until around 700 AD (IIRC). Much of Pre-Columbian art had a corporate style that allowed for very little individuality, but the Moche were highly personal and expressive in their images: instead of head after figure's head all looking pretty much the same, as was so common elsewhere in the region, faces and bodies in Moche art were very recognizably individuals, and were shown not in stiff, stylized poses but going about everyday activities. Including sex. Lots and lots of sex. I mean, there is tons of this pottery with very graphic sex portrayed on it. People fucking, giving head, anal -- especially anal, which clearly had major significance to them (you can find some fascinating papers online investigating this issue), etc. All the wonderful variety of human sexuality was there. Just goes to show, there's nothing new under the sun.
