I'm not an insider, I have no numbers to back up this bit of speculation and I don't have a stake in any of these companies. I'm just kind of noticing a trend in porn that may produce a possible future scenario. I'd also like to offer up my take on how the DVD studios can compete if they want to.
So anyone who's been paying attention has noticed that the MindGeek sites have gobbled up a considerable chunk of the industry. Through consolidation they have amassed a tremendous group of sites that they run. Many of the traditional DVD studios are not able to match the volume of output with the online sites. It looks like eventually it will be a battle between 2 main porn factions, MindGeek and the whatever remaining DVD studios there are that don't close up shop over the next 5 - 10 years. Here's what I would do to combat the online sites if I ran a dvd studio.
- Get a group together of the best dvd studios and create a Brazzers type site that releases content with the same or more frequency for a similar price.
- Create a mix of scenes that include what Brazzers does (safe vanilla porn) and some series that feature Gbangs, Bbangs, Orgies, Reverse Gbangs, Big Tits, Big Ass, HJ and BJ scenes.
- Here's the trick: Keep the tone light! Leave all the choking, punching, spitting stuff to Kink and Evil Angel etc.
- Part of what makes Brazzers successful today is the regularity of the update schedule, this new site should mimic it and just add more hardcore acts. For example, here's the daily schedule that I think would work: 1 regular scene and 1 harder scene.
- Monthly schedule would be: 2 gang bangs, 2 blow bangs, 2 orgies, 2 reverse gang bangs, a weekly Big Tits group scene, and weekly Big Butts group scene. Basically do all the stuff that ZZ doesn't do very often (or at all) and make a site around that.
- Make all the normal scenes that ZZ would shoot and make them better.
- Of the available directors in this group, rotate duties for different scenes to keep variety within the niche.
- Reinvest profits to keep content creation steady.
- Feature the guest directors as part of the selling point for the scene.
- Do lots of user generated scenarios and pornstar requests to build a loyal fan base (include voting, scenario creation and daily production updates).
- Consider alternate forms of compensation (profit sharing? points?) or exclusive contracts to create a large volume of scenes with popular girls. (remember you are competing with a site that has, for $30 dollars, access to a large number of scenes from top pornstars: 48 Jayden Jaymes, 39 Asa Akira, 64 Phoenix Marie, 49 Rachel Starr, 41 Lisa Ann, 37 Bridgette B., 30 Monique Alexander, 30 Kagney Linn Karter, 26 Chanel Preston, 25 Abbey Brooks, 22 Kelly Divine, 16 Jada Stevens, and so on and so forth.) Instead of whining about the tube sites (which is totally understandable) the studios should recognize the value that is presented to the paying public and respond with a competitive product.
This seems like this will happen eventually why not just start now?
I know there's sites like Videobox and so forth (and they may be a part of this seeing as they are in need of new content). The difference is that this site will produce all new scenes with regularity.

And all someone has to do is come up with the millions of dollars it would take to get this off the ground. Easy as pie.

@WATB: Difficult for them as it seems, it'll be easier to do it today (when there is little money) than down the road (when there is no money.) I'm sure more than one studio is looking at projections for the next decade and they are seeing losses. The Brazzers value doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. Today: difficult and expensive but not impossible. Tomorrow: Impossible.

Actually, it's impossible now, too. And not just because of the amount of money you'd need to start it.

Mansef/Manwin/Mindgeek/etc. demonstrates the endgame of capitalism, which is monopolization and crushing competition. If not that one, some other megacorp would have emerged to do the same job. Other monopolies have been broken, but that seems unlikely here, since that would require government regulation and grassroots porn activism, and I don't see that much time left in video entertainment.
