Marketing is making people want your product, convincing them that buying it will give them some intangible like cool, sexiness or freedom (the last is heavily pushed in car commercials). Jean Harlow, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield were all huge sex symbols. Tastes change and sexiness is defined by the media and social norms, the media is not some transparent reflection of public taste.

OT: Perhaps I'm a minority within a minority here, but I'd say the chicks in between weight-wise are getting increasingly lost in the shuffle in this thread. Even though they're neither as big as Virgo Peridot or Julie Cash, nor as slim as Sheena Shaw, I'd say that chicks like AJ Applegate, Ava Alvares, and Ayana Angel (... all A.A. initials.. You are contradicting yourself. You assert both that sexiness is defined by the media, but yet there is a huge class that doesn't align with it. I don't think you have any objective evidence that tastes have changed; you are just using the circular argument that tastes have changed because... that's what you've seen in the media. Sexiness is defined by the biology of a very ancient part of our brains, not by what I see on the TV. There is just an even larger group of people for whom their tastes and what the mainstream media offers coincidentally coincide, making it seem like media influences sexiness, when it's probably just the media concentrating on the largest market segment and those that can be swayed. Another possibility is that the media, instead of dictating sexiness, provides a variety to which subjects would not otherwise be exposed. For the vast majority of my life, I had no idea that a higher percentage of Brazilian women's phenotype fit my ideal. Did John Stagliano make Brazilian women sexy to me? Did I salivate over Kate Moss before seeing Butman Goes to Rio? No. He just presented a truth, independent of mainstream media, that I would not have otherwise seen.

No radical statement or contradiction, maimstream tastes are often heavily shaped by the mainstream media, 'supermodels' and Hollywood stars being the obvious examples. Hollywood use to have a wider variety of body types in the past. Exposure to things outside of the mainstream either via RL or other media can lead to a taste for different things, whether it is foreign art films or curvier women.

Carmen Kinsley was one of the most gorgeous PAWGs who never really "got going" in my opinion. She could have been huge.
