Many pornstars choose to not do certain things early in their career in an effort to always have something waiting to spring on fans and hopefully keep them interested in them longer. Sometimes it seems to work but in my opinion more often than not it really doesn't quite work.
Some girls come into the business and will only do straight sex scenes for a long time then they'll eventually do threesomes, then anal, then IR, then DPs, then gangbangs, etc...Then there are other girls who hit the ground running doing pretty much everything from the start. And of course the many who start somewhere in the middle. Many pornstars worry about early overexposure and consumer burnout.
Do you think a girl is better off starting off real slow and adding stuff little by little or do you think it's bettter to enter the biz with less restrictions? Who do you think has paced their career just right? Do you think that holding off on certain things hurts a girls career? Do you get burned out on the girls who do it all from the beginning faster? Are there girls you never noticed until they started doing certain things?
Unfortunately, I predict this thread is going to turn into a one subject stomping ground for the people who only seem interested in that same dead horse subject but I'm really looking for something else here...PLEASE?

I think it's really up to the girl, personally i like the girls who do everything as i am a anal fan.
I think Gianna has paced her career really well, she held of on doing an anal scene for so long and yet she was still in lots of movies.
I guess a girl will get less work if she is not doing anal etc but girls like Gianna is an example of how you can still be popular if you can put in a good scene and continue to get booked.

To some analysts, doing certain things later (or very later on) in their career may look like they are pacing themselves, but sometimes it can look like a very obvious attempt at desperation, to resurrect a dead or dying career. Janine recently doing IR, b/g and even a trannie, after a long acreer at g/g movies? Some porn performers have done maybe one or two anals (not even worthy of consideration) just to make it appear they're into that too.
Let's just say for example that Teri Weigel would do an anal scene at this stage of the game, would sales of the DVD go through the roof? I seriously doubt it would even register a blip on the radar at this point. The same for Lola, she comes and she goes but no anal and even in a recent Tom Byron movie she even indicated that she has not done it yet and is thinking about it. The "considering" part is what is harmful. If they don't or comes way too far into the future people have moved on to other performers.
I remember an interview with an asian actress some years back in a long interview saying she woulds not anal, but no sooner was the ink dry on that interview she started doing it.
I don't think they explain their motivation(s) very well, and it often comes as either attempts at fattening their bank accounts or keeping their fans "happy" and interested in their career.
We have also seen in the last little while certain performers will do anal for an website, but will not do for a DVD. Is it because they just felt like doing it, or was the website offering a big bundle of money, and way more than a regular porn company would offer? You gotta wonder.

Good points. It really depends on the performer and how big a deal they are in porn. I imagine there are some girls in porn who think they're pacing themself by not doing certain things but if they aren't even a big enough name to get people's attenion in the first place, no one cares what they do. Or because they don't do certain things they're off most people's radar and don't have any major success until they start doing certain acts.
Imagine if someone like Sasha Grey decided she was only going to do certain things in the beginning of her career. Her career would've been totally different. A big part of the reason for her success is that she hit the ground running and doing some of everything and blew people away with it.
Someone like Alexis Texas can probably get away with pacing themself because she was a big deal when she started and all eyes were on her. So for a long time she got by without doing much more than standard straight foward sex scenes. For awhile it seemed like her star was going to fade from being so repetitive but it seems like she back on (or near) the top again. But one has to wonder if Alexis came into the biz doing anal,IR, DPs, rougher scenes, etc...if she would've have been an even bigger star in porn.
You also have to wonder it makes any difference at all in some cases. Many wanted to see anal from Gianna and now that she's done it did it really make much of a difference to her career at all? Did she gain any more fans? Is she getting better movie offers? I don't think it made any difference because she's always had plenty of work and worked for the biggest companies.

This is a topic I always enjoy pondering.
What hurts a girl's career?
I would say all-girl can really undermine a girl's potential career. It can work just fine for a teenager very early in her career if she's unusually hot and she wants to build anticipation for her doing B/G -- if she's 18 or 19 she can afford to spend six months teasing her potential audience, particularly if the trend is towards more explicit acts. But I wouldn't advise any girl doing it for longer than a year -- customers will write her off as not serious about doing real porn and will just ignore her completely.
A girl's career is be made or lost based on how she fucks men, so she can't afford to put that off for too long. And what's really bad is if she reverts back to G/G scenes...
The other problem I see is what I call the East European Career -- they end up doing all-anal scenes very quickly, with no passion to them... just her taking a pounding in her ass and making "ooooohhh" noises a thousand times in 15 minutes. It doesn't make me want to watch her next scene.
I don't think interracial really matters... a girl can have a successful career either way in my opinion. All else being equal I prefer all-white porn, but I prefer good porn above all.
So I would advise an 18-year-old girl entering the business to strive for the following phases to her career:
6 months of girl-girl to introduce herself and get everyone's dicks hard
One year doing carefully chosen B/G with the best white talent, to make make good impressions on new could-be-fans.
Once she's in demand as a cover-girl star, make all the B/G no-anal scenes (including interracial) she can
Now that she's bank-able, establish her own production company when she's young and start stashing scenes "in the can" of her doing everything imaginable, but don't release it yet
Once her no-anal work starts to dry up, it means her initial "it girl" phase is over, so avoid flooding the market with cheaper scenes -- justify being on the DVD covers.
Make a big show of adding anal -- but only do it if she'll be on the cover.
Then do her first scene with more than one guy -- only if she'll be on the cover.
Then her first gangbang -- again, on the cover.
By now she's closer to 30 than to 20, and there are newer girls rising to the top. Start releasing her unreleased younger material in reverse order -- nobody knows what she's got in the can, and they're surprised to see her in anal-gangbangs when she was only 20.
Once she's released all her old material, then come back as a MILF.
I have to wonder if "longevity" is mostly due to which of the following:
Genetics
Lifestyle
Cosmetic procedures
Rate of scenes made
Content of scenes

Did anyone read Maxim about the rise and fall of Scores nightclub. It said Savanna Sampson was a really sharp waittress or dancer there. Caught the eye of Howard Stern; became a Vivid girl who actually did anal and now owns a winery.
I think that's a pretty enviable career arc for a girl in the sex industry

The best thing you can do in any kind of business with any kind of product (In this case, your product is yourself) is to always leave the customers wanting more.
If you land in the industry and immediately do 100 scenes and do everything there is to do, you're making sure the people who are interested in you have no shortage of you and soon enough, they will see that they have plenty of you and will start to look around at other performers.
Mystery is sexually compelling. Even if we've seen a thousand girls do anal, it never really gets old as long as you haven't seen the same girl do anal exactly the same way with the same men 100 times.
What happens with girls in porn (I think) is that some of them try to depend entirely on porn for their livelihood and of course, it may well be possible.....for a while.
I find the best ones always spread themselves around and make me wait until they're ready to do a scene. They don't seem like they live on profits from porn. Some of them seem like they have other income and they really only do porn for the adventure.

Performers such as Aurora Snow, Belladonna and Bobbi Star have done almost anything early in their carreer. It seems to me Aurora did double anal and gangbangs at 18 or 19. In fact, she is a model of longevity. Why? I don't know for sure. Even though her porn carreer on film is quieter, she still does plenty of anal scenes. I guess she attracted for long fan's interest and she was able to make covers of DVDs on a regular basis.
But performers like Lexi Belle only do straight sex or threesomes, but no anal. They are still popular even though people like me would want her to do some more risky scenes.
Great post indeed! And Randomizer's views are very articulate and interesting.

I've always thought it's fine for a girl to pace herself for longevity. However, the problem is if you don't connect with the audience in some fashion it doesn't matter what you do or when you do it.
There are plenty of girls who've come and gone through the business not doing various acts yet no one cares because they didn't connect with the fans.
Although she's a bit of an aberration, Nina Hartley (whose career seems like it'll never stop)is my perfect example. She did anal early, she did IR early, starred in John Stagliano's Gang Bangs way back in 1985. Sure she had that ass, but her attitude was also refreshing. She seemed to be enjoying herself.
Nina could do anything and it wouldn't slow down her career.
Jenna Haze is like that. She epitomizes that perfect little post eighteen innocent looking, but actually slutty, girl thing perfectly. She was another one who was nasty right out of the gate and never looked back. Didn't hurt her a bit.
Now most girls don't have that "it" factor, that intangible, yet some are so pretty/sexy that they create that lust factor from the start, and in that circumstance I honestly think that girls have to strike while the iron's hot. Not to be mean, but a lot of girls don't hold up in the industry. It's a rough lifestyle physically and mentally and some don't do well. They party too much, drink too much or take too many drugs, have eating issues and they deteriorate.
Look at Chasey Lain's comeback. That made little sense and little uproar (except about how bad it was). Here was a girl who was one of the most amazing faces ever in porn and people were telling her to go home. I have no idea how much money she forfeited by waiting too long to capitalize on her looks, but it was probably significant as I wouldn't pay for a single thing she did upon her return. You can't count on ten years of lust filled fans waiting on you to do something new as there's always a new girl coming down the pike. What I think a girl who only has looks going for her and not that intangible needs is a plan to create a fanbase. And you do that by casting a wide net. Look if some guys only like IR, only like anal, only like DP, only like foot fetish, and you know you don't have your heart in the business, be mercenary about it. Every one of those genres has guys who'll develop an attachment to a girl and if you get a thousand fans from each genre, your fanbase grows, so when you get long in the tooth in the industry, there'll be guys who've been following for ten years and have that attachment.
I would've thought Julia Ann's recent spate of work would've brought her more acclaim, but to be honest a lot of guys simply didn't follow her. She used to do boring g/g scenes with Janine then other boring scenes with Wicked and Vivid and that was her career. She's beautiful but simply didn't do enough work that guys cared about her beyond the super intense fans and the ones who bought her previous work, which was limited.
So I think pacing is fine, but you've got to give people at least a taste of everything in due time or they'll just wean off a girl. Lust doesn't last forever...

Pacing is brilliant if done properly. If thought Alexis Texas was really sharp when she convinced Nevaquit to give her one her first covers in the Spring of 2007 on the first "Work it Work it, Get it Get It". He tried to get her to do IR (probably because he wanted to make her cheeks ripple :), but she demurely stated that she wasn't ready to do such a scene YET. Now by gaining a cover of an IR production then doing only a conventional scene with some white guy while all the other girls in that production are taking black dick . . . BRILLIANT!!!
However, Alexis Texas would continue to pull the same game on producers like Spunky over at West Coast Productions and others in 2007, her first year in the game. If I was her manager I would coach her to keep playing producers to get them to court you for your first IR scene in 2008 . . . BRILLIANT!! Sadly, 2008 came and went with Alexis Texas never fulfilling her potential :( Now I was ready to give up on her, but I said hey just be patient, Alexis has a plan.
Then Spring 2009 was upon us an though Alexis did do several more IR covers she had yet to come over to the "darkside". Summer 2009 - still no Alexis Texas IR. Fall 2009 - still no Alexis Texas IR, although she perform in scenes with Cherokee Da'Ass and Marie Luv. During this interim, Alexis Texas has broken into anal with Elegant Angel of the Evil Empire . . . what of the thunderous demand for a boy/girl IR scene?
Now compare Alexis Texas' managerial/marketing exploits to that of Sarah Vandella. She come out in 2007 as well, but she doesn't target companies like WCP or Mercenary Pictures from the jump she does regular white-on-white porn for the first year or so with some lesbian stuf mixed in. Sarah could have taken the Alexis Texas route as she also has a big butt and is even prettier in the face than Alexis, but rather Sarah starts off the Spring of 2009 with INTERRACIAL PORN!!! 2009 has been a marketing extravaganza for Ms. Sara Sloane (formerly Sarah Vandella). She has garnered multiple covers for several top notch companies and has just scored a lucrative contract with Zero Tolerance/Black Ice.

I submit that the Sarah approach to pacing is more effective than the Alexis approach ONLY because she did not make any IMPLIED promises to do IR in the future, she just seized the new year by the balls and knocked Alexis Texas and those other so-called adult film actress off the radar for a season. Had Alexis simply performed in one IR scene with Nevaquit aka H.J. in 2008 or 2009 for either the WIWIGIGI series or the Keep it Right There Series, just one mind you, I believe wholeheartedly that Alexis Texas would be much, much more successful than she is today as it would open so many doors for her.
Alexis could then, based on the blockbuster sales on her IR debut within the Evil Empire mind you, name her price for any future ventures with Elegant Angel or any company outside of the Evil Empire. It would be unreal as she could still tease and dodge in future IR productions because she had already fulfullled her potential when she allowed Nevaquit to bend her over . . . now she could really make those other companies "bend over" if they ever hope to have her do another IR scene with a black man for one of their productions . . . Alexis Texas could milk this angle for years!!! Now this degree of pacing would be BRILLIANT!!!
On a side note, based purely on the outrageous number of covers she has received over the last several years no one has paced themmselves better than Gianna. Just count the number of covers she has received . . . it speaks for itself

I'm not sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the "new girl" to do anal or IR or whatever. The whole concept of "career pacing" assumes there is a static group of rabid fans who will buy/rent every DVD a girl does, and therefore it is important to keep those fans anticipating the next new thing. Maybe that's true, . But for me it's more about the studios who shoot her and the males she pairs with with, than the actual sex acts she chooses to do or not. Many guys can't fuck and many studios can't film. I think for longevity it is equally important to strategically shoot with all the "good" studios and all the "good" males as checking off the normal checkboxes (anal, IR, g/g, etc.). I'll buy the good scenes whether she does them early or late in her career. I'll avoid the crappy scenes (unless the studio manages to trick me) whether she does them early or late in her career.

Well, there's always room for chance. And a girl can improve her odds at longevity by not getting too crazy with drugs and stuff, taking care of themselves and not getting implants. I've seen things as simple as lip enlargements (whatever it is they do to their lips) completely ruin a girl's appeal to me.
It must be understood that a girl like Aurora Snow was comfortable enough with herself that she didn't run out and get implants as soon as she made enough money. I think that's significant. There are women with implants who have been successful for many years but I think that is often despite the implants rather than because of them.
I don't want to turn this into a huge rant about implants though. There are many factors. Some of them are things the girls can very deliberately do and there are some that are just intangible.
I think it all starts with a girl with a reasonable level of intelligence, good looks and sexual skills who actually wants to stick around or who is at least comfortable working in the porn industry for many years. I think any of them who actually wants to probably can.
I just think pacing is a smart move. But it should be done with some discretion. If a girl is constantly marketing herself as "My first anal" or "My first IR", I find it a bit annoying. But then, I'm not someone who really places any extraordinary value on a girl's first anal or whatever. As long as I haven't seen her do it a thousand times exactly the same way, I'm probably interested.

IMO, I don't think the idea of pacing has any effect on career longevity what so ever. I believe it does have an effect on the amount of sales a girl can drive, but that's assuming that the girl has the ability/star power to drive sales to begin with. Unless you're one of the top starlets, it doesn't matter what you do (or don't do) because you will soon be forgotten/replaced anyways. There are too many girls, too much competition for every new girl who tries to pace her career to even matter.

I could not agree more with this comment.
You can distill the impact of pretty much every decision a girl makes to whether a guy watching scene X is eager to see scene Y or Z.
I think Gianna was able to carpet-bomb the market with no-anal scenes... AND GET AWAY WITH IT... because in addition to having great tits, her personality and attitude towards her work always left guys wanting to see more of her. There's always going to be another girl with a great rack... next week, next month, next year... but guy keep wanting to see more of those same tits because they know she's a consistently good performer on camera.
So, personality and attitude can count for a lot in terms of leaving guys wanting more.
I would also say the girl should vary the guys she works with -- if you've seen the third scene of her getting nailed by Erik Everhard in as many months, your mind is going to start looking for something "new", even though when you get right down to it, you never found the girl to be getting less attractive from month to month. What kills it is watching the same girl and thinking "I've seen this before."
It's also good to mix up the style of scenes -- in addition to generic gonzo, she should do some pro/am "reality porn" (like what Shane's World did in their heyday) where she's out and about with real guys in real places so the viewers see her "real side" (particularly if she has a bubbly personality), and a feature here and there, which reaffirms she's an A-list pornstar in a higher-budget production. The idea here is not to get into a rut.
And like I said earlier, don't do scene after scene of straight-to-anal... I'm all for her demonstrating she has no limits and getting pounded by ultra-gonzo types like Rocco or Jazz Duro, but those scenes tend to showcase her tolerance for pain rather than her personality and sexuality.

I don't think in general pacing sex acts helps a career last any longer. I've always thought a girls should do all the stuff she she's going to do within her first year of the biz. I think the sooner a girl is doing doing anal, IR, thresomes, DPs, etc., the quicker she becomes more in demand, grows a bigger fanbase and has more movie options. In the world of Gonzo most of the top stars are the girls who do the most stuff. They get work from the bigger companies/directors because they can fit into whatever type of specialty movie they're doing. If the director is doing an all anal, all DP, all IR or whatever type of movie that girl has a chance to be called.
Someone like Jenna Haze's career exploded when she started doing all the acts she does these days. I believe there was a time when Jenna didn't do all that stuff. Jenna's career was probably doing okay back then but she probably could've been enjoying the fame, fanbase and many awards sooner if she was the type of performer then as she is now. I know next to nothing about Jenna Haze and she may not be the best example. I know some girls have to build up to these things so I'm talking in general here.
I think in lots of cases "pacing" a career postpones a girl getting the most from they can from from their career.

Good point about Jenna Haze... she was "popular" early on but she didn't reach top-tier status until many years later, when most girls who entered the business at her age had long since washed out.
I have to wonder though why her popularity continued to increase like that. Maybe pacing her career was a GOOD move, so she established her name first, so she wasn't simply "the new face" when she started cranking out the scenes? I'd really like her take on this.

^ I think her career went into overdrive after the release of THE DARK SIDE OF JENNA HAZE. Which was a movie that showed her pushing her (until then?) limits. I never saw that DVD or any of Jenna's stuff before but from what I remember reading it was almost a new unleashed Jenna.
Surprisingly (to me at least), Gina Lynn did a DARKSIDE movie first and even though it sold well it didn't the same thing for her career. I would've thought Gina would've easily ended up the bigger star of the two. But apparently Jenna just out performed Gina when it came to the sex scenes.

Not all girls are pacing their careers or holding out for more money. I doubt Stormy Daniels will ever do anal or interracial even though I'm sure she will make a lot of money if she decides to do this at this stage of her career...but obviously it's not a matter of money. Let's just face it some girls are just not into some types of sex. Let's just respect whatever these girls are comfortable with on camera.

My advice girls is something like this :
No more than 6 months of G/G...then regular sex with white guys...then anal with white guys...then G/G with black chicks...then interracial threesome teaser (the girl appears in a threesome with one black guy and another white girl but she doesn't let the black guy fuck her)...then DP...then conventional IR...then IR anal and finally IR DP.
A lot of girls forget that "interracial threesome teaser" step where they do a scene with a black guy fucking another girl. They will just appear in the scene but not let the black guy fuck them in the threesome. That will tease IR fans and give them hope for true IR in the future.

1 I know not all girls are pacing their career and holding out for money. What I'd hope to talk about here is what I and other posters think about girls who do supposedly pace their careers and the effects of doing so and talking about if it's always the best thing from a career stand point.
2 I'm also aware that there are types of sex some girls aren't into and won't do. All this discussion is a bunch of "what ifs", opinions and speculation that really don't amount to anything other than something that might be interesting to a few people here (kinda like most of the threads posted here).
I totally respect all women in the biz and what they choose or don't choose to do. It's a very brave and cool thing they do and they probably get enough flack from non-porn fans for their career choice, it's pretty lame that they have to get grief from people who actually watch porn too.
3 As far as this discussion goes, I think contract girls are almost a whole different thing. The most of stucios that have contract players like Stormy has a bit of a different audience than Gonzo. I think that audience has a majority of fans who like stories, beautiful women, and less over the top sex acts. There are many contract girls who thrive in that arena doing what I'll call "vanilla" (nothing wrong with vanilla btw) sex scenes because that's what their audience wants.
However, if a contract girl ventures into the "Gonzo" arena I don't think the "Gonzo" audience will support them in the same way as the feature/contract girl audience did if they try to keep doing only "vanilla" sex scenes. I think the reason girls like Lisa Ann and Julia Ann are the top stars they are today is because they embraced "Gonzo" and the sex acts it takes to be a great "Gonzo" performer.

Career planning? I don't think so...
Some girls try, and soon realize that they don't get to make the decisions on who they fuck and when they fuck them.
Unless the girl is somehow able to produce, own, and distribute her work by herself - how can a girl possibly pace herself? By refusing jobs? That's not good for longevity either. Do they *really* pass on a $1,000 job today, just for the chance of a better paying job in porn 3 years from now? I don't think so.
Rather, I take the opposite approach to this subject. One of my basic philosophies in life, is that for the most part, we all strive to do the least amount of work for the most amount of gain. If a girl is able to make a decent living being booked in soft solo scenes, that is what the girl will do. Those who have natural beauty use it, those who don't do anal.
For the vast majority of girls, porn is *not* a career, it is just quick cash for a year, maybe two. Any a girl could try to pace herself, and come to find no one wants to call her anymore after the first year. Yea, smooth move there

it depends on the girl. It really does. Others have already mentioned the great Nina Hartley. She comes off frank and honest. I started reading the responses for this yesterday but I couldn't respond cause I got sidetracked with other work and I wanted to take a good amount of time to respond. The Naughty America website has/or had a live text-in segment with many many porn actresses and many of the interviews are some of the most honest and candid I've ever seen of porn actresses. A good example is the beautiful [ invalid url ] herself. Others who have appeared on this show are Sinnamon Love, Shayla LaVeaux, Michelle Lay, Brandy Talore, LisaAnn, Rachel Love, Raquel Devine and Gina Lynn just for a quick rundown. Hartley certainly is durable and for people who have seen her work from the 80s, in the full bloom-and-fire of her youth, will hold a special fondness for Nina. I can watch Nina reminisce in an interview all day(and I think she did about three Live Shows for Naughty but I've seen only one).
I believe it, durability, depends on the girl. A porn actress doesn't have to ratched up intensity or freakiness in her work to keep my interest. I enjoyed Tabitha Stevens, Shayla LaVeaux, PJ Sparxx in solo masturbation videos(Im thinking the company out of New Jersey). There was a website that had scenes with Peter North coating Jenna Jameson's face. But I could take or leave Jameson in the long run, withstanding even Howard Stern's constant promotion of her. It's nice to see Jenna do something else positive with her life. My only regret about Nina in the 80s is that they didn't do creampies, otherwise her several pairings with the 'Milkman' Peter North could've ended up with Nina leaking out huge amounts of clumpy nut.
I like the ladies in the amateur ranks very much ie Janet Mason(before California), Lynn Carroll, JeanSwing, CreampieCathy, Oasis and so on. The uncomplicatedness of Amateur has always attracted me. No attitudes, no worry about budget and I kind of preferred the informal atmosphere on the sets. Hey what can I say, I even liked some of the Randy Detroit stuff!
I find myself getting into some actresses I wouldn't have normally picked up videos off the shelf. This is due to the web in which everything is a click away. So your horizon is broadened in a way. In the brick-and-mortar stores I was more selective. But I still like Brick-and-Mortar 'cause you stand a chance of seeing something you werent looking for as far as box covers go.

I think this thread assumes the girl is good enough looking and has the other attributes required to be a major star, and thus has a "career" and some degree of control over it. Yes, obviously the majority of girls entering the business are desperate for quick cash and don't have the looks or the mental stability to stay in the business once their "new" wears off.
But, clearly, there are choices that can be made by girls who are star-potential.
Sunny Lane and Gianna both CHOSE to hold off on doing anal until their careers were mature, so we can debate whether that choice served to help or hinder their careers. I think you could make the case with them that you can get pretty far in this business while still having limits.
Another case would be Janine, who was girl-only throughout her prime, and then made a splash by starting to do guys when she was nearly forty. Could she have been even bigger if she'd done guys during her prime? I think so.
When it comes to "refusing work", it's not quite that simple. Gianna's phone was probably ringing off the hook for her to do no-anal scenes, at least until recently... more power to her. But I'm sure they were also offering her even more money if she'd do anal -- was she wise to turn it down?

Interesting thread. I would love to hear what the performers have to say also.

I think those limits and how long you can get away them depend on what the girl brings to the table.
Compare and contrast Gianna and Brandy Taylore. Both got noticed when they entered the biz because of their big natural breasts. For a time Brandy was the one of the two who got more boxcovers and seemed to be the one poised for a bigger career. But Gianna blew her away because of her explosive performances. Those performances made her a fan fav and Gianna became a boxcover queen for awhile while Brandy took a distant second seat to her. Add IR to Gianna's plate and it made her an even bigger star. I think Gianna's breasts, doing IR, and particularly her performances were/are enough to alllow her not to do anal, DPs and keep her on top for a long time. Also, Gianna is one of those girls who appeal to many genres in porn. Gianna's big in big breast movies, big ass movies, IR movies, and "harder" sex movies. Meanwhile, Brandy's career is limited because once you get past the big breasts she doesn't bring much else to the table.
But all that logic goes out the window when you compare and contrast Alexis Texas and Jenny Hendrix. You'd think that Jenny should have the bigger career and bigger name because she has a big butt comparable (in my mind) to Alexis and in my mind blows Alexis away as a performer and does all the stuff that allows her to appeal to a much wider audience: Big butt stuff, anal, DPs, wilder sex, gangbangs and eventually IR. Yet, Alexis is a bigger star and does none of that (except eventually doing anal). In my mind, if you take away the big ass from Alexis (it's a great ass) you don't seem to be left with much. Yet she a big star in the porn biz.
At that point I really don't think Gianna had much to gain from doing anal if it was something she was in a hurry to do. She obviously was getting plenty of work without it and she was visible to the fans of anal because she was one of the few grls who still appeared in anal themed movies without actually doing it.

Good comparison there between Gianna and Brandy Taylore... Personally, I think there's a glut of big-natural girls with little else going for them besides their bra size, and very few big naturals that bring the whole package, both in terms of looks and personality. Gianna is certainly an example of a multi-asset star.
What amazes me about her is how Gianna managed to do a billion titles (all of them no-anal) and be on the covers of at least half of them, without wearing out her appeal.
On the other hand, I've read industry people's comments on career longevity, and they made the case that it's smart to pace their scenes, and take breaks to do the strip-club circuit to bring in the cash they need to maintain their lifestyle, without flooding the DVD market with cheap scenes.
And your comments on Alexis Texas are also quite relevant -- she's got the looks but many of her performances are sub-par IMO. I guess time will tell whether her career flames out once everyone is used to her face not being emotive.
I guess it all still boils down to what RandomPrecision said: it's whether the girl leaves the customer wanting more. Gianna does.
One thing I'll bring up is cosmetic procedures -- so many girls have killed successful careers by making bad gambles on changing their looks. Girls with great-but-small breasts who get boob jobs. Girls who get botox (WTF?). Girls who get duck lips (the worst choice of all IMO). My take is, hit the gym, take off a few pounds, eat right and do the other things to give their skin that youthful glow... and stay away from drugs, alcohol, and surgery.

The bottom line is that generally, a girl who is able to saturate the industry with herself in a short period of time will probably make a lot of money in the short-term but will most likely lose most of her following to fresh faces once most of her fan base has 200 of her scenes at their fingertips.
Girls who have a wider and stronger appeal may be able to hold on a lot longer than girls with a limited appeal but anytime you give your customers more than they could ever want in a few months, you tend to kill your future business.
This is great for customers who want it all now and it's (I guess) desirable for the business people but it can have devastating effects on the girls.

That doesn't seem to always be the case. Someone like Shyla Styles has been in the biz for awhile and she seems to getting/taking more work than ever. She does it all and seems to get plenty of work from the bigger companies/directors. Yeah, at this point you could say we've probably seen pretty much all she can throw at us but the bigger and smaller companies/directors keep using her because she does t all and fits into whatever project they want to do. I personally don't go out of my way to see Shyla (don't have to) but she's still fun to watch and can be counted on to do a great scene. If I'm on the fence about buying or renting a movie, knowing she's in it lets me know there's at least one scene I'll enjoy.
With me there are many girls like that. They've done plenty of scenes and I've seen them lots of times but they almost never disappoint. I see them as the strong bench of players who you can depend on as the "fresh faces" and superstars come and go. I tend to think the fans who follow everything a particular girl does will suffer burnout quickly but fans who follow companies/directors moreso don't tire of a girls nearly as quickly.

This has been talked about a lot in this forum. I've never hated boobjobs the way many of you do and often think it's a good move for many girls. Some of you won't understand it because you look at boobjobs in a different light than I do but boobjobs certainly can renew my interest in certain girls or even make girls I never paid much attention to suddenly make me more interested in them. With certain girls, even if I was a fan of theirs before in some cases after their boobjobs I only want to see them in scenes with their new boobs and lose interest in their pre-boobjob scenes. I have a fairly long list of girls I feel that way about. So with fans like me getting boobjobs does affect longevity of a girl (but not always).
Also, for certain small chested girls getting a boobjob lets them extend their career by making it easier to move past the "barely legal" genre that definately has shelf life for them. It seems that the "barely legal" does well but there aren't many, if any real superstars from it in the way there is in "regular" porn (from what I see). You can only play the teen or daughter role so long and it seems fairly limiting. Some girls like Sasha Grey or Amber Rayne gave strong enough performances to make it easy for them to work both sides of the fence but not all the "teen" look girls are so lucky. Doing like you say and going to the gym isn't going to make any difference with most girls in that genre since they have no weight they need to lose.
I'd hate for this to become just another "fake tits suck" thread but I think if done correctly and done at the right time a boobjob can boost a career. I love Sophie Dee's boobjob and look. It enhances her overall shape and balances her body nicely. She's appearing in movies she would've been in before and she a boxcover girl again. Directors seem excited about her again. I don't see how anyone can say it was a bad move on her part unless you listen to the boobjob haters who refuse to see the benefits of a boobjob because of their own hangups.
The botox, lips and other surgeries are fine and help some girls stay looking their best. It only backfires when they go too far. If it's done right those percedures enhances looks slightly and don't call attention to themselves. I think anything that keps a girl looking their best (of course "best" is subjetive) helps the longevity of their career. Because just as some fans are quick to complain about being able to detect a procedure they're equally quick to complain if a girl is look "haggard" or not aging well.

A lot of good points there.
I love breasts, and 90% of the time, I find the best looking tits are natural ones. There are girls with implants that I like, but they tend to enter the business that way, not add them later. I've seen more careers derailed by boob jobs than helped by them.
Sophi Dee had OK naturals, and she has OK fakes now -- I don't think they're a big plus or minus for her.
Melissa Lauren is an example I'd give of good cosmetic procedures -- I liked her boobs both before and after her implants. I liked her nose both before and after she got it done. Her look was already appealing for me, so it didn't get better, it just changed its appeal.
The obvious counter-example, though, would be Jenna Haze -- she was the "barely legal" look if there is one, and her career only got stronger after she reached drinking age. She's flat as ever and raking in the money.
I think you may have unintentionally highlighted an important factor here: there are a number of girls who enter the business who mostly have "young and naive" as their appeal. This business uses up their "young and naive" pretty quick, and without that they're just another dumb girl with average looks and no sexuality, looking to make a quick buck. It's sad to watch some of the BTS interviews where the girl has completely misread why the producers are casting her -- "I'm only the new girl who doesn't know how to act but they think I'm a lot better than these girls on contract". The girls who have that killer-sexuality aspect to their personality don't have that problem.
So this goes back to whether the girl has underlying appeal, like the Brandy Taylore example, where once you've seen a dozen scenes with those big tits, you're looking for bigger, shapelier tits to watch. But if the girl got into the business on the "barely legal" angle, it's even less forgiving.
Botox looks unnatural to me, and really seems unnecessary for a girl in her 20's. I really don't find wrinkles unattractive (laugh lines are quite the opposite) -- it's sun damage and sagging that turns me off.
I really don't get the desire for fuller lips -- most of the sexiest lips I've seen are pencil-thin with sharp corners, instead of bloated. And all it takes is a the slightest evidence of injections to ruin the "natural" look.

I have been preaching moderation for awhile now. Its not only the simple fact of not doing everything at once its also not over doing movies too. Its really amazing the amount of movies some girls do. Another thing most girls dont do is feed your fan base by reaching out but not over extending. This is your true gold mine, feed the base base enough to keep it hungry/adoring you but as a rule of sales never nickle and dime people to death either. I can not believe that these female talents allow themselves to work for so little. anyway my 2 bits

I think they'd be better off doing a G/G IR scene to give hope for a future B/G IR scene. The tease would probably just anger IR fans(actually IR fans would complain either way but I believe they'd take more offense to the tease).
In general I think girls entering the business should save various acts for later in their career if they are able to get a lot of work without being available for everything. I think this insures that interest for them will increase each time they add to the list of what they are willing to do. If a performer has long term porn aspirations I think they should focus more on longetivity rather just quickly making as much money as they can. This is especially true now when a successful career can lead to other avenues like producing/directing the way Bella and Jenna are. Obviously that path won't be open to everyone, but I think a performer who intelligently paces herself has a better chance than a performer who just does anything and everything right from the start (this is assuming she had that "star" quality to begin with).

The very recently retired Katja Kassin had an awesome, long career, and has left in full control and with dignity. Regardless of anything else, isn't that pretty much the answer?

Not necessarily. Times have changed so that it seems to be more difficult to sustain a lasting career. There's also the possibility that she is an outlier. Without having a large amount of feedback from performers it's hard to come to a definitive conclusion. It's really just speculation because we don't know how many performers left the business because the work dried up and how many left for other reasons.

^Yeah, but there are many variables anyway. Some do not plan longevity; they just do what they feel they need to, then get out a.s.a.p. Some get messed up. Ultimately, if a performer comes out the other end content in their career and choices, I'd count that as a WIN.

Really? I'd think think the opposite was true and it's easier than ever to have a long career in porn. Not ony is there the whole MILF thing to turn to after being in the business for awhile, there's many more companies to work with that need girls to shoot. Not to mention there are girls who shoot their own content for their sites and they need girls to supply content.
I think back in the day when there were fewer companies out there and those companies wanted a certain look and age range it would've been much harder to maintain a career. But now when a girl gets older she can do MILF stuff and there's even "granny porn", if she gains weight she can do "thick" girl movies, a boobjob (if she needs it) can get her big boob work, she can work for smaller companies, she can start doing or do more IR, she can do bondage, or work for different websites. There seems to be much more opportunities for girls theses days as compared with before. It seems to me if a girl can keep it together she can work as long as she wants.

Katja is a great example of a girl who entered the biz doing pretty much everything (Katja said her very first scene was double anal) and was able to keep working until she decided to stop. I think being a great performer trumps everything when all is said and done. In the end a director wants someone who they know will deliver. The hot new girl(s) is fine to attract viewers but if that girl is getting by on looks or hype or whatever they still need those girls you can knock it out of the park to fill the rest of the movie with.

Yes and No.
First, I agree there's a big upswing lately in MILF work, but is there any evidence it's anything besides a short-term fashion? I'm just saying, these things are known to come and go, although I'm glad there more of a niche for MILF's now (although what qualifies as a MILF is another issue).
Second, for girls that are legitimate MILF's (in their 30's, let's say), what were their odds of their careers surviving long enough to see it become the Big Thing? How many washed up stars waiting tables out there wondering if they'd stayed in shape and stuck with making a few scenes here and there, if their career would have rebounded and they'd be like Lisa Ann?
Third, with the advance of technology, both in terms of production and distribution, the barriers to entry in the market have collapsed, resulting in a glut of product and would-be-stars. I think an economist would tell you that this tends to allow a lot more "marginal" would-be-stars to find work in the industry... briefly... and then get washed out and replaced by the next crop. They have less chance than an 80's star of having a 5 or 10-year career. I would say there are tons and tons of girls with 6-month or 1-year careers in today's market, compared to 10 or 20 years ago.
So, if we assume the MILF market is here to stay, then yes, the Jenna Haze's and Gianna's have a much better shot at 15-year careers... but if you look at it in terms of the typical girl walking onto a set, her career is roadkill.

^ You make good points but as far as the MILF thing goes I think it's here to stay in some form or another for a long time. Perhaps it won't be as popular as it is now but I don't think it's going anywhere. Some of the other trends that came and went in porn I think didn't stick because they had more to do with sex acts or emphasis on body parts. The MILF thing thrives and works for several reasons...
1) The first and probably most obvious reason is the MILF fantasy. There are people who dig the whole "older" woman aspect. It doesn't even seem important to have those women with younger guys at this point. I don't think most guys care how old guy is they just like seeing the "older" woman perform.
2) Many fans have fav porn girls from the past that either quit the biz or weren't getting work like they used to. The MILF genre allows those girls to make comebacks for those fans who enjoyed them in the past.
3) I seems most of the MILFs are more voluptuous and often big breasted. That appeals to the fans of that type of woman. This is why I'm a fan of the MILF genre more than anything. Many MILF movies loaded with "fuller" figured women and they're great movies for fans of that type of woman.
4) The MILF genre can cover so many other popular porn genres. There are anal MILF movies, Big Breast MILF, IR MILF, gangbang MILF, Big Ass MILF, All Black MILF, All White MILF, MILFs with daughters, etc., etc...There are so many things to play off of it's harder to get bored with it.
5) Really...theres no good reason to not have "older" women doing scenes. Those older women in most cases still look good and many are great performers and many still have fan followings. You look at performers like Lisa Ann, Julia Ann, Francesca Le, Devon Lee, Janet Mason, etc., etc...and it seems ridiculous that anyone can think they're past their porn prime.
All those reasons add up to the MILF genre appealing to a wide range of fans and allows those fans plenty of senarios to enjoy.
I think because of the MILF explosion we're seeing a wider range age of women coiming into the porn biz and so it's not out of the question that many of them might be around to take advantage of the MILF genre. Some girls are entering the industry in their middle twenties, so the age of "MILF-Dom" isn't that far away.

Lots of good posts here on this topic. Didin't know Katja Kassin retired. She was great. Gianna & Brandy Talore are excellent as well. I've enjoyed MILF performers ever since i've watched porn and will probably still enjoy the older woman my whole life. Barely Legals are great too. Big naturals, Big fake, & small natural breasts are all great. Don't mind if performer gets implants. Like the work both pre & post implant. Glad some stars stay with their small natural breasts for entire career though too. Some stars may not be pacing themselves with a plan for the future as much as just making it up on the fly. Might work for som too hold off doing certain acts. For others it might prevent them from being a success. Seems too hard to tell what will work & what won't to make them famous, successful, popular, etc.

Everett: You mention a company out of New Jersey that seems to specialize in female solo masturbation videos and the girls that they apparently feature, PJ Sparxx, Shayla LaVeaux and Tabitha Stevens. These three girls are high on my list of all time favorites, consequently I would be interested in finding some of their videos of this nature. Can you help me (us) out here on this one?

It would seem this to be the case and it really should although I would qualify this premise by saying that it would alpply to anyone getting into the business, irrespective of her age.
A number of girls have very successfully paced themselves by holding off doing M/F material. Janine of course the probably the one that comes first to my mind. She played out the G/G thing I think to as long as she could and still remained viable within the industry. Her "Edginess" in other things bought her some time but without doing M/F it seemed that her days were numbered. On the other hand, Summer Cummings seemed to mix a number of different sub-genre' within porn and used the mixing of those to her advantage. Summer started off in exclusively G/G scenes and branched out into so moderately heavy BDSM within the lesbian shoots. She then retained her BDSM interests and went into M/F where she continues today.
The study in Summer is interesting because it shows that it is not always a girls entrance into M/F from all girl material that enhances her longevity within the industry. For instance, a girl could begin doing M/F "Straight" porn for a number of years but then go into lesbian, fetish or BDSM. The key is mixing it up and reinventing oneself. Nina Hartly was mentioned earlier her and she is a great case study in this technique. Not only does she do a lot of fetish stuff but she has really focused on it on her own site.
Sadly there are women who continue on in a sigular genre' and as a result, either watch their career expire or gain the ire of fans. Lexxi Tyler should have made the transition to M/F some time ago but now simply has been relegated to a niche performer. On the other hand, Lucy Zara, longtime softcore, fetish and G/G star has now probably gone beyond being salvagable and her long awaited debut in M/F hardcore will be anticlimactic, if indeed it ever arrives.
In short, pacing seeems a pretty elementary concept. Just maintain variety and fans will continue to have an interest in what a star is doing next. Stetch the anticipation out too much and they will go somewhere else.

I advise all of my clients that want to have a long career to not only vary their sexual acts with time, but to also learn how to get behind the camera and the computer.
A lot of women in the industry are learning how to be videographers, photographers, editors, and webmasters. One client has been going to school for the past several years for computer programming so she can build sites for herself and other pornstars when she graduates. Another is working as a PA learning the ropes. Some have gone on to be make-up artists.
Vanessa has been doing all of this since launching her own site in 2002. She has been in the game since 1996 and has no plans to stop anytime soon.
I also tell them to chat and dance to add income and longevity to their careers.
With the interwebs, a performer can now have a career thats lasts decades instead of years.

I think a girl can get away with only doing G/G for a long while if they are very good looking or have something else to exploit. I think Girls like Janine and Felecia can get away with doing only G/G for so long because they're so good they build a big fanbase of guys who like seeing them do anything. If they were average looking they'd never be able to pull that off. If you think about it all the girls who only do G/G and get away with it for any length of time are usually very pretty. Janine and Felecia's willingness to "push" their scenes a bit and working for a comapany that routinely put out lots of G/G scenes and movies made it work for them also. Working under the big powerful VIVID umbrella helped make it possible also.
In the case of Summer she did G/G, fetish/bondage and big tit scenes. She dips into enough fetishes/genres to keep her career going and touches different fanbases. I don't think a small breasted Summer would've had nearly the same success. I believe Summer's main selling point no matter what sh does is her huge breasts. I find it strange that at this point in her career Summer doesn't do B/G stuff for mainstream porn release. I know she does it and sells them through her site for a high pricetag but I'd think at this point she'd give in and do some for the DVD market. I think she still has enough fans who don't even know she's doing B/G that would support her doing B/G movies for other companies.

To pace herself for a "perfect" career and longevity, a girl should only do quality stuff. Some are in my opinion putting out too many scenes. The problem is of course, that she needs the money.
