There are plenty of things I like about the classic era, but one thing I think really adds to its charm sensuality and also sense of fantasy (and probably admittedly a bit of a return to fond memories of my youth) is the look of the movies being shot on film.
Prompted by perhaps not the best example but this pic of Shauna Grant..

Is it possible, and desirable I guess to others except yours truly, to recreate that look realistically in today's videos?

I liked the film look brought to us by Cecil Howard and others back in the day. It doesn't look much like what I stream from the websites now. Cheaper video pushed film into obscurity starting in the early 80's. My guess is adult films belong to history now. But,if someone wanted to recreate it in HD, I'm in.
Also, the face in the squatting photo doesn't look like Shauna, but you can tell from the others, it's her.

^ Yeah its a pity because it gives it a more art sophisticated tasteful classy feel. Lots of words coz struggling to find exactly the word I am looking for..
But admittedly I do have massive nostalgia for that entire look, tanlines, bush, hair, makeup. And though I rant about it regularly and never my intention to hijcak/derail my own thread that it sometimes to me feels more genuine sex from that period too.
But I would love to see a HD movie that brings back this look, complete, not only the film but everything that goes with it, sensual full red lipstick, sunglasses, long straight hair tossed sexually over the shoulder, lens flares, blinds shadows, all of it?

Only a couple of us then, maybe is nostalgia, but thought perhaps with plenty of us being in or around our 40s would like to see this kind of look return?

^ You're definitely not alone in hoping classic era porn could be remastered in HD. The challenges are getting usable source material and determining if you can sell enough copies of the remastered version to justify the expense and effort.

I'm with you on two fronts:
1) I would love to see high quality remasters of classic porn.
2) I used to enjoy jerking off the Shauna Grant.
Unfortunately, the market will probably never support remasters of more than the most famous titles, and after her death, I couldn't jerk it to Shauna anymore.

^ Also would very much like to see quality remasters of the classics, though to be honest sometimes that 4:3 and poor picture quality makes it work, adds the sleaziness and something to the whole experience.
Also enjoyed immensely spanking it to the supermodel gorgeousity that was Shauna Grant, agree was very tragic similar to Savannah. You could perhaps replace her with the stunning Marilyn Jess in the spank register?
I was really more talking about today's porn though with today's starlets and in HD that the odd film occasionally being filmed, perhaps a tribute or neo-classic series, with that 70s/80s aesthetic?? And a bonus for us too, would be the much missed bush and sleaze aswell :)

From a technical standpoint, I can't see why it couldn't be done. Cost vs benefit is the only thing I can see getting in the way of it.

Distribpix and Wildside have remastered a bunch of classic films, and the new streaming site Skinaflix launches in 2014.

^^ In a lot of cases, the fact that it was porn meant that people didn't take care to maintain a high quality master of the 35mm.

I would love to see a remastering of older porn movies because these are the ones that I most care about and can't find anywhere now but I see two huge problems with anyone attempting this. As many have already mentioned. The cost VS profit ratio is probably the biggest obstacle but I see another one that nobody has mentioned. So many people now want their porn in HD and won't buy anything that isn't in HD. I know you can clean up an older print but you can't actually improve the video resolution from regular to High Def.
That said. I still hope that someone at least attempts it.

^ I'm not positive, but I think if it was originally shot on film, and you have a good quality print (or negative), then there isn't a problem getting HD resolution. If on the other hand, all you have is some digital format, then there is a real problem.

^You could be right but I'll have to see it to believe it because I can't see how
a movie that was never shot in HD can be upgraded to HD. The best you can hope is to digitize the print, clean the static out of it and improve audio.
If you could really increase the resolution on movies then wouldn't Hollywood have already done that for many of their older titles?

I believe that film has a higher definition than DVD. The issue would be finding acceptable film prints still in existence and the cost of cleaning them up. Distribpix has been cleaning some up and releasing them with a few on blu-ray.

^ Yes. So has Vinegar Syndrome. It is VS and Distribpix who are launching Skinaflix. I also saw that a studio plans to restore THE OTHER SIDE OF ASPEN from the film negative some time in the future.

The biggest problem with the "Film look" is most scenes are shot on camcorders or DSLRs that have limited dynamic range compared to film. You would need to shoot uncompressed via external capture or record with a camera that can shoot native raw.
With the introduction of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and the Pocket Cinema Camera, the cost of raw has dropped dramatically, ($2000 for the BMCC & $1000 for the BMPCC), the associated costs of shooting raw haven't dropped much however. You need either SSD drives or expensive SDXC cards and then lots of external hard drives for storage. A 64gb SD card for the Pocket only records around 25min of raw. That same SD card on a DSLR would record 2-3+hrs, though the footage wouldn't be half as grade-able.
Speaking of which, you then have to grade the image to resemble the film look, but more important that than you have to light it the way a pro cinematographer would light a mainstream film. You now have a movie that costs 3 times as much and would take 3 times as long to film. It can be done, but how many studio's will take the time and money to do it?
EDIT: As for remastering old films, as Flash said, 35mm film is basically around 4k resolution, more than enough for HD. It's mainly a question of the cost of scanning into 2k vs 4k and how much to restore a print. Again, time consuming and costly. Movies that were shot on SD video during the 80-90s are going to be stuck at that resolution. It's possible to clean up and make it look nicer, but again...time & money for not much gain.

^ Excellent and most informative reply CRFlixxx, thanks very much
Sounds like cost is a huge factor, pity as am seeing and liking that first pic again while making this reply...
Ah well :)
