I don't mean they LITERALLY won't let me use the rental services...I mean they're making it so I'm afraid to continue trying. The services which send out the disks in little envelopes with easy-return capabilities are so convenient, I hate to have to give them up.

First, let me point out that First Class Mail delivery in my Northwest Chicago suburb went from adequate to atrocious several years back. For example, there is a magazine, packaged securely in an envelope clearly marked "First Class", which I have received from Los Angeles for years. They mail it every Wednesday. I always used to receive it, like clockwork, on Friday or Saturday. Maybe 10-15% of the time it wouldn't show up until Monday of the following week. Well, suddenly things changed about seven years ago, and ever since then it takes a *minimum* of five days to arrive, and usually six to seven...sometimes even longer. Meanwhile, my cohorts in the New York area still almost always receive their issues in two-three days. Yet the Post Office here still claims first class mail only rarely takes more than three days. HELLO??? I haven't received my well-packaged, clearly “First Class”-labeled magazine in less than five days in at least a year!!

So, how does this relate to DVD rentals? I've rented from three companies that use the small first-class envelopes: XRent DVD, Adult DVD Empire, and a few of the Oddesse companies. They usually arrive in about four-six days, when they arrive at all. I get a kick out of their estimates of three days, and statements that "on rare occasion" the mail is delayed. But again, I am blaming the post office in my area, not the rental companies, which all seem quite dependable.

But things are worse than a few days delay. Last year, my final rental on the AdultDVDEmpire plan never showed up at all. Now I have an order placed eight days ago at XRentDVD, and it has not (and probably never will) arrive.

And I have had not one, but two, DVD's arrive that were SOOO clearly opened on purpose so that some Postal employee could either watch it, see if he wanted to watch it, or maybe just want to know what I'm getting. That's why I also laugh at the FAQs that say, "The mail carrier won't know that you're getting adult DVD's" because of discreet return address. Man, I wish I could post an image of how these looked when they were received! They were so very clearly ripped open on purpose, by someone who was trying to do it quickly. In one case, the bottom was neatly torn open; there was a long jagged through half of the top flap (the part you throw away before returning the rental) starting near the other seal -- as if the person trying to open it was TRYING to pull apart the other seal neatly but had to give up and use brute force because he was about to be caught; and the perforation on the side was torn off almost all the way so that the top flap was just about ready to fall off. It's a wonder the DVD didn't fall out. The thing was basically as wide open as could be. If anyone wanted to look at the DVD (and I'm sure they did), it couldn't possibly have been quicker or easier to do at this point. This did not look like the kind of mangling job postal machinery could have done, especially since it did not require cancellation. Besides, when I get even slightly damaged mail, it usually has a "damage" sticker on it; and if it's badly ripped, it is put in a bag with an apology from the post office. Well this one didn't have any apology, and it couldn't have possibly been in worse shape. Of course, they were careful not to damage the disk itself, in case it was one they wanted to watch.

Now, as I said, the (second) rental that's completely (and probably permanently) missing -- right now -- is from XRent DVD. Unlike the other two companies, they package their DVDs in an a secure outer envelope that isn't as easy to rip apart as the other companies. So perhaps "whomever" decided it would just be easier to steal this one outright, since they couldn't quickly see what was inside.

IMPORTANTLY, I've only rented about 10 DVD's altogether. 20% lost, 20% mangled & opened; and the others all at least a few days late. This is pathetic and scary. (Fyi, I also received a *purchased* DVD a month ago, in a small package, that was badly mangled to the point that anyone could easily look in. That one was delivered to me in a plastic bag with a Postal “Service” form apology, and could very well have been caused by some idiot putting it through an automatic canceller instead of hand-cancelling.)

Anyway, what this all means is that I'm going to have to give up the great convenience of the first-class (ha, ha) mail rental programs...all because of the Northwest Suburban Chicago Postal "Service" (thank you very much). (Gawd, when I hear the PO crow that their Chicago area performance ratings has improved greatly, and that on-time first class performance is about "95%", it makes my blood boil). BTW, during the last month I've received other peoples' mail five times. And the last two times that I've picked up my mail at the local post office after a "vacation hold", they gave me at least five pieces of other peoples' mail each time. (The second time, I knew what to expect, so I stood there at the counter looking through my mail so that I could -- as expected -- find the stuff that wasn’t mine and hand it right back to them). So even when the DVD isn't stolen by the Post Office, they could be giving it to others in my zip code.

Another reason I'd better quit the program is that after several non-delivery cases the rental companies are going to decide that I am fabricating the losses, especially when these rare (!) problems start happening after so few rentals.

Finally, I note that when I send a rental BACK, the rental companies tend to notify that they’ve got it back in about 3 days every time. Why the discrepancy in receipt vs. return? That only makes me more suspicious about what's going on here.

If anyone in Northwest Suburban Chicago (or anywhere else) has had similar problems, I'd love to hear about it. Regardless, it was theraputic to be able to vent. I detest the local Postal “Service” so much I can't tell you -- and the issues I've mentioned here only scratch the surface of their incompetence, likely corruption/stealing (some individuals, anyway) and neverending deterioration in service.

Well I'm glad I don't live in NW Chicago.

That magazine you're talking about wouldn't be AVN by any chance, would it? I used to have an AVN subscription and the packaging would be opened half the time. I stopped subscribing a couple of years ago.

Anyway, I live in southeast Michigan and have purchased hundreds of adult DVDs from XRent, ADE, and Adult DVD Now and can't recall any of the packages being tampered with. Almost all of the orders were sent Priority Mail or 1st Class. And I just started renting titles from XRent without any problems so far.

And I've sold over 500 DVDs through Adult DVD Marketplace using very discreet packaging. I have not had one complaint from anyone about the package being tampered with (knock on wood).

If things are really that bad in your area, maybe you'll have to choose the more expensive shipping options...

No, the magazine I referred to isn't porn related, and it comes in good shape -- other than taking forever to get here every single week even though it's sent First Class and carefully packaged as such. But I do receive porn brochures, etc. in envelopes that are no longer sealed at all "for some reason" -- especially over the past year. (I need to use some restraint here to avoid launching even further into my string of Postal Service horror stories -- since don't want to veer too far from the DVD-rental implications.)

As for your idea of moving up to a higher class of delivery, I asked XRentDVD why they recommend Priority over First Class (for $2 more per disc). I was hoping they would say that the packaging was different, i.e., in a sturdy Priority Mail box. But apparently that's not the case. Last night I placed an order with them Priority anyway, hoping I might have more luck with that. (Priority is the one class of mail where the area Postal Service doesn't seem as *quite* as hellbent on making things difficult for me.)

I think some of the companies offer even higher-level shipping options with sturdier packaging, but this basically wipes out the low-cost benefit of renting.

Hey, congratulations on your record of selling 500 DVD's without a single tampering complaint! What kind of packaging do you use? Would it be obvious to postal workers what's in there?

BTW, I wrote Adult DVD Empire about the ripped-open rental I described in my first post, and asked how common the problem is. They never replied. Fyi, the other ripped-open rental was from Oddesse, which uses a similar mailer. Also BTW, the shipped-9-days-ago rental from XRent didn't show up in today's mail either, not that I expected it to. Gotta love the Postal "Service" in my area. About seven years ago, it was discovered that a Chicago Postal worker had a huge stash of other peoples' mail in his home. As I recall, it wasn't for purposes of stealing, it was just so he wouldn't have to work as hard. Uh oh, I'd better stop before I start venting again...

I use plain bubble mailers from Office Depot. When I ship out single DVDs, the mailer is just big enough to tightly hold the case. I guess it might be obvious that I'm shipping a DVD...or maybe a PS2 or XBox game since the case is the same size. The mailers come with a self adhesive strip but I always add an extra strip of super strength packaging tape to make sure that if it is tampered with, the customer will know it!

XRent is the only place I've rented from. I'm amazed that the return envelope makes it back to them in one piece.

Sounds like the Newman character from Seinfeld.

I always return ship my dvd rentals from post office boxes rather than my home post box. I have had a number of packages go missing on return shipment. I use BushDVD and they have always been good about immediately sending out new movies upon notification of the lost package with no questions.

I have taken to always shipping from the post office box at the branch office to eliminate one carrier getting access to the items. I have also had once instance recently where the foldover on the BushDVD mailer was opened in shipping. I think that this may be due to the automatic sorters catching the space between the two flaps and tearing the mailer open. This does concern me.

I do think you have to be careful. Let your rental company know of the problem. They will potentially file a complaint with the post office which may scare of the postal employee on your route or sort intercepting the mail.

Welcome to the boards Please Mr. Postman. First let me say that I think you win the award for the longest first post!

Sorry about your rentals. Sounds like you have had some horrible bad luck. I've rented mainstream moves for years via Netflix style services. Very very few problems. I've rented porn non-stop for a couple of years. I've had hundreds of mailers arrive in normal condition. Rarely there is a long delay. Sometimes it shows up late or winds up back at the vendor. I can only recall once that the mailer had been ripped open and the disks were missing (this was from a company that mailed 2 in the same package.)

But it probably comes down to the honesty of your individual mail carrier. In my case it's possible that it was ripped open by a machine and the movies wound up on the floor at the distribution center. It didn't come in a USPS "damaged" plastic bag just an empty mailer.

Clay, as far as notifying the rental company, I did do that for one of the two mangled and opened DVDs by emailing Adult DVD Empire, and they never replied. Also, when I spoke to a Northern Illinois USPS Customer Relations person (about my perpetually late First Class magazine, not the DVDs, she said there is no way to investigate delayed First Class mail. I didn't pursue the issue of whether they would investigate FCM that looked like it was opened or that never showed up at all, but I get the impression that such complaints would be ignored without purchase of Delivery Confirmation service or insurance for the affected items...I could be wrong.

HeyNow, thanks for the welcome! I'm honored (or should that be "embarrassed"??) for having the longest first post. As for pointing the finger at my carrier, I've had carrier dishonesty pretty far down the list on my suspects for the DVD-Rental receiving problems. But I'm beginning to think maybe I should bump him up a little higher on the list. Right now, here is how I rank the following possible sources of the problems, from "most suspect" to "least suspect":

1. The huge mail sorting station in nearby Palatine, IL. Seems USPS delivery really deteriorated around here when that place opened in the 90's. I've others around here say the same.
2. Workers/operations at my local Post Office (not mail carrier).
3. Unintentional misdelivery by carrier.
4. Purposeful theft, "borrowing" or nosiness by carrier.
5. Item not actually sent by Rental company (for the lost and delayed items only, not the opened/mangled ones).
6. Postal Service at the origin point or enroute (i.e., before the items reach my area).

Am I missing a possible suspect?

Just for the record, my aforementioned "a la carte" rental from XRent arrived today. It was postmarked 3-3 (as expected), so that means it took exactly two weeks for this one-DVD "First Class" mailing to make it to my mailbox.

While there was no evidence that it had been opened, the XRent First Class mailers would be very easy to open and reseal without obvious tampering/damage (unlike ADE and Oddesse's paper mailers). But my guess is this delay is simply due to the notoriously undependable First Class delivery in my area.

While I see from other threads that other folks have encountered some long delivery delays (from various companies), those incidents seem to be the exception to the rule. In my case, even though I haven't been renting long, I've experienced a looooong delays or ripped-open delivery -- or a permanently lost mailing -- with every second or third rental. I'd be absolutely thrilled to get the kind of delivery that others have complained about.

Here's what we at cuteboyvideos.com have discovered.

Apparently certain postal employees at certain post offices will take it upon themselves to delay, lose, or otherwise misroute mail that they "don't agree with." I spoke with our friends at Pornteam, who have been shipping postal service longer than we have, and they said that they have on many occasions had entire trays or boxes of mail get delayed, sometimes by 1-2 weeks.

One of the owner's father spent years working at the postal service, and he intervened. Turns out that at the post office where their mail was being taken, a couple of employees were, in fact, taking the crates of mail and intentionally moving it off to an obscure corner where it wouldn't be seen. Of course, said employees weren't fired or anything like that... but apparently the investigation by the postmaster was enough to stop things from happening.

More recently, we suddenly started having all of our first class and priority packages taking anywhere from 10-15 days to be delivered (instead of 1-3 days) after switching from one post office to another. Calls to the supervisor did nothing; it was at this point that we heard from Pornteam about their experience. We switched to another post office about 4 miles away, and magically all of our packages are delivered on time now. (Note that both post offices go to the same regional sorting center, so the problem was not in sorting or misrouting.)

What I would recommend is calling your postmaster. There is nothing wrong or illicit about renting adult DVDs. Tell him that your packages are being significantly delayed and many are being ripped open. Tell him that if it doesn't stop, you will place a formal complaint with your congressman. That will make it clear that it will be a bigger pain in the ass if they don't do something, and my guess is you will magically start getting your mail with no problems.

Thanks so much for the insights, cuteboyvideos.com, although I was sorry to see that this actually happens -- and around San Franciso, no less (assuming you mail from that area). I had been hoping there was no *purposeful* delaying, opening etc. going on (not that NON-purposeful problems are acceptable), but your post makes me realize that such crap may actually be going on.

But in my case, of course, it would have to be somewhere at my end or enroute, since people elsewhere report much better "luck" receiving stuff from the same shippers. Also, I have to keep in mind how pathetic much of my non-porn delivery has become over the past few years. OTOH, that stuff usually just gets DELAYED, not ripped open as my porn mailings sometimes are, so we may be talking a combination of factors in my particular case -- postal workers and/or carriers who don't like what I'm getting, or are curious, or want to "borrow it" -- AND plain old lousy NW Suburban Chicago "service". Also, there's still the question of why I have less frequent problems with RETURNS (of rentals) as I do with receiving them.

One question for you: I doubt your mailings make it clear on the outside what the product or website name is. For the purposeful delaying cases, do you think it was a situation where someone found out what that product actually was (which I guess wouldn't be hard to do) and then got the word out to the fellow holier-than-thou idiots? Or do you have to let the Post Office know what your website name is. (Sorry if the latter question seems kind of naive...I'm not very familiar with the business end of things.) Also, do you have credible reports of packages being opened or never showing up at all?

That's interesting! I wouldn't have suspected deliberate delays besides a carrier "borrowing" a DVD for personal viewing. Thanks for the long post!

Apparently there is a lot of accountability on the local offices when a national complaint is registered via 1-800-ASK-USPS. Can't speak from personal experience, but you can always give it a try.

I don't know about others, but I've complained to 1-800-ASK-USPS a number of times about various topics, and it has accomplished zilch. When I do actually receive the promised return call from a local employee, the indifference and stream of lame excuses I hear is pathetic (but not surprising to me). Usually it's some variant of "we have no system for checking on or monitoring that" or "the sender must be at fault". (Note that there was definitely *not* a "we're sorry but" at the beginning of those examples.)

A few months ago, I used the electronic form on the USPS website to file a vacation hold request. When I returned from vacation, my mailbox was stuffed full, and many of my periodicals had disappeared into thin air, never to be found (and who knows what other mail might have been lost). I contacted the 800 number about this, and they had a manager from my local Post Office call me. His reply was essentially, "oh, we don't always get the forms from the internet. Next time come into the post office and fill out a vacation hold form instead."

If they can't accomplish something THAT simple, do you think they are going to be willing to (much less successful at) address delays and lost mail?

I don't know what possessed me to do this, but I recently shipped a single DVD via Priority Mail from here in the Chicago area to Manhattan. Only took 7 days to get there. Hey, at least they didn't lose it, which is the outcome I was expecting after 5 days.
