Adult DVD Empire: Redesign

Warrendale, PA (September 10, 2004) – Adult DVD Empire, winner of the 2004 AVN Award for Best Retail Website, is proud to announce the relaunch of www.adultdvdempire.com.

The newly designed site is more customer-focused than ever. As more and more ways to buy and view adult products are made available, the methods in which these products are displayed become more difficult to manage. “As the leader in Adult E-Commerce, we felt the need to push the envelope of what can be done to present the most comprehensive shopping experience available on earth,” said Jeff Rix, Founder of Adult DVD Empire.

“We were faced with the problem of effectively communicating such a diverse product offering to customers. We offer so many different ways to buy adult products – DVDs, VHS, and Sex Toys plus VOD streams and downloads, DVD rental, Used DVD sales/buyback, content websites; not to mention our wealth of editorial content – reviews, articles, interviews etc and affiliate programs – that it becomes very difficult to clearly communicate that to the user within the normal boundaries of an ecommerce website. So we did what we do best – re-invent the boundaries,” added Barry.

The approach of the new site is to let customers dictate which methods they are most comfortable using to get the products the want. “We all sat down and talked about what we could to make the majority of users feel good about shopping at our site, and the one thing we kept coming back to was that people know what they want but don’t always know how to get it or what is available to them,” said JT Smith, Director of Marketing for Adult DVD Empire. “So we developed a homepage that allowed the user to go directly to the products that most interest them, i.e. ‘What turns them on’. And that is the first thing you’ll see when you visit the new site – What Turns you on?”

Why redesign?

“We found ourselves at a point where we were no longer merely a DVD retailer,” said Mike Barry, Director of Adult Operations at Adult DVD Empire. “We needed a site that represented that idea.”

What’s New?

The biggest change is in overall structure and navigation. The menu bar has been changed significantly including the addition of new tabs. A “Bargains” tab was added to allow customers one click access to our bargains section, featuring all of the lowest priced products available for purchase. An “Editorial” tab has also been added bringing together all of our exclusive editorial content including articles, reviews, and more.

The item pages were also subject to a complete overhaul for this redesign. In many cases, one individual title can be purchased in multiple formats, including DVD, VOD, Rental, Used and VHS. The new item pages are layered out in a way that cleanly organizes all of the options available to the customer.

We've also added a completely new layout for search returns called "Grid View." When a user selects Grid View their search results are shown as a grid of box covers instead of the standard line-by-line search return.

Is the "new" site still treating first customers like thieves? Or perhaps even more so? Will it perhaps demand skin samples and passport photographs in addition to photocopies of bank statements etc?

Wow, that's pretty harsh. Let me guess, your a non-US-based shopper or you would like to pay with a check/money order?

Most of the reputable US-based adult retailers require extra account verification steps for many types of first-time customers. If you're lucky enough to find one that doesn't require any additional steps for first-time international shopper they msut not take their merchant account terms and conditions very seriously. This kind of stuff is mandatorey for many merchant processing systems.
