I mentioned on the ‘Starcrossed’ forum that I might post some notes about Pierre Woodman’s ‘Private Castings’ series, and here is a start. I hope other people will contribute information, especially about the girls.
There are now 41 volumes in the series on VHS, and Private are reissuing them on DVD. I’ve seen about 15 of them on VHS, mainly between vols. 30 and 40. I will concentrate on those where there aren’t any existing reviews on the net. There are reviews of most of the earlier volumes either on this site (search reviews under ‘Castings’) or at IAFD.com (search reviews under ‘Private Woodman Castings’ and see reviews of vols 1-18 by Paul Fashion).
This post is a general introduction. A lot of it will be familar to some readers, but for anyone who hasn’t seen the Castings series, they contain interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and extracts from Private movies featuring the girls in the interviews. The highlight of each Castings vid is a scene where after the interview Woodman has sex with the girl, in front of a fixed camera. These scenes are the main reason for watching them, and I won’t describe the other scenes in detail.
The interviews follow a standard pattern. Most of the girls are Hungarian or Russian, and Woodman interviews them in French or English through an interpreter, or directly if their English is good enough. (He also speaks some Hungarian and Russian himself.) Woodman begins with basic questions about the girls’ name, age, and what they do for a living, and then asks them if they know what he does. At this point they usually say they know he is a photographer, but they think he does fashion or softcore nude photos. They have usually seen an advert for models, or one of Woodman’s talent scouts has given them his number. He then shows them some of his hardcore magazine work, which they look at with varying reactions - annoyed, unhappy or frightened, sometimes just amused. Almost always they say they will not do the things in the magazines. Woodman tells them to relax, and says he does some softcore work, and they can work something out. He then asks them questions about their sexual preferences and experience. Finally he persuades them to undress and pose, including kneeling on the bed with their butthole pointed right at the camera, so that he can see if they are suitable for softcore work (he explains that only exceptional girls can do this).
At the end of the interview they are usually still reluctant to do hardcore, and Woodman says they need to have some more discussion, which is not shown on camera. When the scene starts again the girl is naked on the bed and Woodman begins having sex with her. This also follows a fairly standard pattern: first pussy-eating, which brings the girl to convincing orgasms; then vaginal sex, which rises to a frenzied pounding, with the girl screaming and thrashing around in some mixture of agony and ecstasy. After about ten minutes of vag Woodman stops to take a breather, and gets the girl to suck his cock. He usually appears to cum in the girl’s mouth. The contents of the special cream are a secret, but Woodman has said in interviews that it includes a painkiller. Often he forces her flat face-down on the bed and pushes her legs apart so that he can fuck her harder. Sometimes there are dissolve-edits during all this, and you may suspect that he is switching to the pussy, but there is so much definite hard anal that I give him the benefit of the doubt. The girl’s reactions to this are very intense, and again we wonder ‘agony or ecstasy?’ Most of the girls claim to be anal virgins, so you might think ‘agony’ was more likely, but they don’t try to push him away, and sometimes they keep grinding their ass down on his cock after he has finished.
The big question is: how genuine is all this? Common sense suggests that if a sweet innocent 18-year-old girl (as most of them seem to be) is lured along to an interview under false pretenses, then is shown a hard-core porn magazine, with things like DP which she has never even heard of before, she is hardly likely to let a chubby hairy balding Frog bang her tight little asshole into oblivion just half-an-hour later. Some of the girls even claim to be virgins, and you wonder if there are really that many beautiful 18-year-old virgins in Eastern Europe, and why there is no sign of blood when Woodman supposedly deflowers them. Cold logic also suggests that Private would not release a film without all the usual formalities of age-verification, model-releases, HIV tests, and so on, but there is seldom any mention of this (though Woodman does occasionally wear a condom). We are therefore bound to suspect that in reality the girl knows all along that this is going to be hardcore porno, and that the ‘interview’ is a sham, with the girl just pretending to be innocent and unwilling. When I first saw one of these scenes I assumed this was the case, but now I have seen more of them I have to conclude that most of the interviews are probably genuine. The difficulty with the ‘sham’ theory is that the girls would have to be extraordinarily good actresses. There is no way that the interviews could be scripted in detail - they usually run for about 20 minutes without an edit, and just imagine any porn actress memorising 20 minutes of dialogue! Without a detailed script, they would have to improvise ‘in character’, and anyone who has seen a drama class (or a Mike Leigh film, ho ho) will know how phoney this usually looks and sounds. If these girls are faking it, then they are better than most professional actresses. I find this even more difficult to believe than that the interviews are genuine. Also, if the interviews in the main scenes are faked, then all the other interviews which follow the same pattern must also be faked, and this would require a huge amount of planning and effort for very little purpose.
If the interviews are genuine, the remaining question is what Woodman tells the girls off-camera to persuade them. I would guess he offers them a large amount of cash on the spot - large enough (by East European standards) to make anyone think carefully - and explains that his special cream will prevent any pain. And Woodman does seem to have a certain charm with the girls. But he can also be quite forceful in his ‘persuasion’, even on camera, and I guess that some of these shy girls go along with what he wants because it is easier to give in than to resist an older and more dominant personality.

The series is designed, probably by Woodman, to make it appear that Pierre is the smoothest talking cocksman that ever walked the face of the Planet.
David, having watched quite a few of this series, and posted reviews to this site, I do tend to concur that there just can't be enough good actresses to make the whole thing a sham. That said, Woodman has bastardised the Castings formula to such an extent that the stuff in Superfuckers and thereafter seems set-up to one degree or another. The older stuff from Russia circa 92/93 seems totally genuine, but as time goes on it all seems less so. I can imagine that Woodman began shooting such material when he was only doing stills for Private, and began compiling a resource of potential models, for which he later fully realised the commercial potential.
So I feel the interviews are mainly straight up, but as the series and the casting concept became more in the public eye, and the series was fully fledged in its own right, the temptation to take a few liberties with the set up would grow.
In one of the last ones I watched, Woodman claims to meet 15 virgins a year in his work.
Nonetheless, I think the series, for all the faults and falings - and no wonder you had so much to write about it, it's a great talking point - has a certain charm. Let's face it - do we expect everything we see in a movie to be "true"?
My main complaint is that Pierre can't just be honest and show the discussions on cash, which is what really swings it most times, I am sure. His tongue is smooth, all right, but not that smooth!
Main scene: girl credited as Angel (in interview gives name as Angelica). Age 19, Russian. Casting in Budapest, 03-2001. Interview in English (no interpreter), with some conversation in Russian.

The interview goes on for about 25 minutes, with Woodman trying to break down her resistance, but with little effect. The girl is confident, even arrogant, and sometimes puts him on the defensive. She tells him ‘she is not some stupid little Russian girl’. She is not impressed by his usual talk about travel opportunities, as she says she has been to Los Angeles and many other countries. She does not need the money, as her boyfriend has a good job. She has never done anal sex, which she thinks is ‘not normal’, ‘crazy, stupid’. She is willing to do erotic photos, but not hardcore. Woodman persuades her to undress, and there is some conversation about her breasts: ‘You have beautiful breasts’ ‘I know’ ‘Have many people told you they are beautiful?’ ‘Yes, of course!’ she replies laughing. She is clearly aware of her stunning looks, and Woodman begins to work on her vanity. He gets her to look at the magazines again, and she seems interested, but she says she thinks it would be painful because the men have such big dicks. Woodman suggests that doing porno would teach her more about sex, like a ‘sex school’, but she says if she wants to learn about sex she can buy a book!
Then Woodman says they will go out to a restaurant, but she can take a shower first if she likes. Then there is an edit, and next we see her coming out of the bathroom wearing her clothes (a stylish ‘Bebe’ tracksuit) again. But Woodman gently sits her down on the bed and says he wants to show her something. However, I must admit that in this particular case it is conceivable that it was faked. I though I've read somewhere that Woodman was going to keep the Casting series alive and kept producing it exclusively for Private even though he left for Hustler. Any truth to that or was it just a rumor?
David-J, I am also a great fan of Pierre Woodman casting x, and I believe that the interviews are true. The series Casting x were thrown in 1997 and some interviews were made in 92/93, well before even of PRIVATE to enter in the video market. David-J mentioned that reviews of volumes 1-18 are available here or at IAFD and, with the notes on 30-44 he posted recently, that just leaves 19-29. A very intelligent question. Maybe because nowadays "casting" the girls seems more important to him than making the actual movies. And maybe because in those castings he's the real Woodman, cynical and cruel, and not the usual frozen stylist. One of the few truly terrific porn scenes I ever wacthed was in a Private Castings video.
