Welcome to Adult DVD Talk, Mr. Movie !I think Private DVDs are very good, both in terms of the content and mastering. However, the more Private discs I see, the less impressed with them I am. Their menu design is fairly amateurish, there are not a lot of extras on most of the DVDs and they usually are similar (production notes, 5 trailers, photo gallery, maybe a "making of" report). The A/V is solid, but I'm not sure that they are worth the $20+ pricetag some of the time. Private/Penthouse is great, except for the awful burned-in multiple angle icon in the first couple. And maybe I just don't get it, but I don't see a lot of difference between most of Private's other releases. Sure, there's a bit more style and more intelligent plots in the Penthouse series, but for the most part, it's the same talent doing the same things. Right now, in terms of DVD design, I think Wicked is the company to beat... There are other studios who are close, but Wicked has been the most consistent in producing high value & high quality discs. - Saki  [Link] |

Mr. Movie: I find it hard to generalize on Private as I watch more and more of their dvd's. As Saki said, there are plenty of problems with them. I would include the narration (instead of dubbing or subtitles), the price, and a host of other factors that make Private releases good candidates for reviews (to point out the good ones as well as the bad ones).I finished a review yesterday of Weekend In Bologna (AKA: Gaia 3) which really stunk. The review will likely be posted later today and it serves as a buyer beware that all of Private's movies aren't the same in terms of quality. On the other hand, Private XXX 8 and Zodiac were really good. I hope Private spends more time picking the better releases for dvd in the future. [Link] |

To me Private is like one of those glossy magazines you get when you travel by airoplane. The passengers mustn’t be bothered, they mustn’t be worried. Only nice subjects like Thai food or wild mustangs. There’s of course nothing wrong with the Thai kitchen or wild horses as there is rarely anything wrong with the beautiful girls of Private. It’s just that it gets so boring in the context. You know exactly what can happen and what can’t happen. The overall quality of Private is pretty high but they never stand out. When I watch porn I’m looking for a great scene. If there’s one great scene and four bad ones I’m pleased, but what I get with Private is always five average scenes. Private tries hard. They provide us with very good-looking girls and exclusive settings, but to me what they’re doing is too much of unimaginative vanilla porn. Private doing Vanilla porn? I don't think so...The Private Video Deluxe series is top notch fetish filming. Lots of stylish outfits and hot sex. I have very rarely been disappointed with Private, but I'm picky about which titles I buy. I currently own about 35 Private DVDs and have only been disappointed with maybe 2 or 3. The only major flaw is the dubbing which is explainable when you figure how much directing and still photography takes place on the sets. As far as extras go...I don't really look at them. I want a solid movie...the extras to me are just that...extra. The only extra I really find worth a look are the behind the scenes footage.
Another great thing about Private...no condoms, plenty of facials, beautiful women (for the most part), and I really enjoy the fact that they have a sense of fashion/eroticism in their films. Not just naked people having sex...

I too would disagree with the statement about Private being vanilla. The quality of the movies may vary (in every sense) but perhaps I'm thinking inside the box (so to speak). If you mean vanilla in the sense that the attractive cast has hardcore, condom free, facial and anal oriented sex-it would be vanilla.If, on the other hand, you meant the numbing sameness of the sex-hardcore or not-you might have a point with some of their directors. Even Vivid makes an occasional good movie-just as Private makes an occasional bad movie (although each make a lot of nearly average movies with Private on the high end and Vivid on the low end). I forget to mention the Pirate Line...yes those are also good, but I don't find them to be AS good as the Video Deluxe line. I've been trying to get the Virtulia line on DVD but haven't been able to locate it for a good price. I've also been waiting forever it seems for Rubberfuckers Rule - Tanya Hyde's stuff is intense.
As far as I'm concerned Private should offer their DVDs on a subscription basis like their magazines! Just send them to me ASAP.
Another great thing about Private is they appear to listen to comments. The first couple of Penthouse DVDs they put out had that annoying black multi-angle camera icon in the corner...they heard everyone complain and made it smaller and capable of being turned off. That to me was cool.
As far as Wicked goes, my wife and I almost fell asleep watching Dreamquest. Sure the effects were interesting and the behind the scenes footage was worth a look, but the sex didn't impress me and I don't need a half-assed story. I'm watching porn for a reason. If I wanted a mainstream movie...I'd watch a mainstream movie...[Link] |
