Why is it that Private/Pirate have the lettering on the spine of their DVDs reversed from normal? (Typically on a DVD / video / book, or what have you, when the item is put onto a shelf you tilt your head to the right to read the text - with them they do it the opposite. This is a little annoying...

It isn't reversed from normal, it is entirely normal. For continental Europe. It is North American and British products, mostly, that have the writing from top to bottom, while French and German products usually have it from bottom up. Then there's Japan, where books are read right to left. I saw a Japanese DVD (from Japan, not one designed for USA distribution) at a local store, and it had the "front" cover on what we would call the back.

I used to be bothered too, when I started collecting European history books 15 years ago, but now that I have shelves full of books with the spine writing from the bottom up, I no longer even notice it.

It's not just limited to European companies though, I have a Heatwave disc from bottom to top along with most of my Vivid Discs, a TVX disc and a Wicked disc. Also the cheapo mainstream company Platinum has them that way as well.

The top-to-bottom text orientation has always made far more sense to me. That way, when I lay the DVD case (or book) flat on the table, with the front cover up, the text on the spine reads right side up. With the bottom-to-top orientation, the text is upside down when the case is horizontal.
