My local dirt-merchant doesn't have any Private DVDs at the moment and mentioned that Private has gone out of business. I'm assuming he means that the Canadian and/or American branch would have pulled out.
I'm sure what he's disguising is being dropped by Private but I'm curious if anyone else has anything to add or has heard anything similar?
maybe if you say Private is the biggest (cable) porn company in the market I might agree with you (although Vivid may have a say in that one too) ....But the reality is that Private was the biggest porn company, period. ...Now, you make a tour to all those pornshops in midtown manhattan (NYC) and Private dvds are disappearing of those stores shelves little by little. ...and if they buy their new stuff is only 2-3 copies and that's it. ..Private do not sell well anymore my friend and they have Adamo and his clones to blame for that. No Woodman doesn't offer any quality since his change to Hustler. He has made only a few feature movies for their Platinum Series, but the budget never was as high as that he has when he was with Private.
What he is doing these days is shooting totally boring Gonzo porn. Look at one of the Superfuckers or Hustler XXX titles. The girls are top notch as always, but the sex is lame. They only go though the positions without any heat, emotions or chemistry between the actors.
It's so sad. Private was one of the biggest and best porn companies in the world, but in the first line it was Pierre Woodman which leads them to their success. And nowadays neither Private nor Woodman releases good movies.
But there's a little bit hope. Last week I've read an article on machomedia.hu in which Woodman said that he is not renewing his 5 year contract with Hustler. So maybe Private will engage him again.

Private compilations are also Private lite, where the so-called extreme (e.g., dpp and dap) scenes are all edited out. Private has the current policy of producing adult movies with stories and luke warm action. Also, the babes used are not the newest and hottest. It is not surprising Private has lost market share as their titles are boring. They need to go back to their old formula of getting the latest and hottest Euro babes with various lines for various market segments and not edit out scenes based on some ridiculous corporate policy. Also, having too much compilations spoils the brand and is a sure trend of accountants taking over corporate policy.
Keep in mind that Private has seen some very serious turnover in their executive management positions throughout the company. They had a CEO in there for a while that was suppposed to be god's gift to the internet. He pushed the company in too many non-core directions at one time. During his tenure they spent a lot of time and resources developing silly product lines and trying to creating content and subscription services for markets that simply don't exist (like PDAs and cellphones).
I think you'll start seeing good things from Private over the course of the next 12- 18 months.
I know that even Skeeter was tethered by Private for his first two movies for them (No DAP, no ATM) I know they supposedly took off those restrictions starting with his third movie for them, so hopefully things are looking up for them. I'm still undecided as to wether or not I'll rent his first 2 if i see them in the store.
Where does this stuff come from??? OK...Private is the largest adult hard core company in the world, based on sales. Remember that we release in 42 countries with each title. As I have said before, we have no secrets as we are a public company. We had a bad spell when we had a president that came from the banking industry and didn't understand porn. In our last quarter report Berth Milton stated that due to poor investments by previous management, we did not have enough funds to pour into new quality productions, thus all of the comps. We now have about $6 million to put into movies. I have been given the Extreme line, and it will be American Directors using local talent...okay, maybe you have seen them in multiple scenes but the guy in Russia hasn't! We will mix the directors up, but they will be top notch guys and I will be putting the highest budgets into Gonzo. We have many projects in the works in Europe and you will see them next year. As to the management at Private, with the exception of the previous president, the management has remained the same. Pierre Woodman did mention to me at the AVN show that he was interested in coming back, but that will be a Spain decision. Maybe I am partial, but Private is still one of the premier companies in the industry.

Well besides the feature part, it still makes Private one company among many. Let's look at what made Private so hot in the late 80's when they hit the US market all over. They did a lot of anal, which was pretty extreme back then. They had really hot women from Europe, most of whom you never saw in the US. Some went on to do US films, but most did not. Every other US company has a European line. The women are no longer unique to one producer. How many companies have filmed Stacy Silver, Julie Silver, Jane Darling, Monica Sweetheart, etc? Porn is more extreme now, while the sex for Private has remained the same or become more tepid. If you aren't reaching for the couples market, this may not be the way to go. Of course for the occasional viewer this may make no difference. They remain a feature based company to my perception, while the market has moved to gonzo. I don't know how big a factor this is, but to me this means two things. The market isn't as interested in features and/or the relative profit of gonzo is higher. Personally I like a little set-up, but dialogue and a plot are lost in porn. (I miss the classic costumes and a little kinky reasoning.)
I can see how Private stays strong on the world wide market, but as an individual I could care less what the Russian porn market wants.
I'm very interested to see if Private can reclaim the quality they had in the early/mid 90's because at that time Private was indeed the best company with Evil Angel that is.
Personally I think they should bring back Lecastel also. I mean it's obvious his contract at DS isn't the best and Lecastel (with Woodman) directed the best movies at Private. I mean Lecatel's Matador serie was really awesome, beautiful hardcore sex with some very good looking girls.

Private needs to get back to what made it great; Beautiful women doing nasty things in beautiful places filmed by excellent directors with some decent plots.
Gonzo can cover some of the aspects mentioned above but in general I find it lacks respect (for the women and the viewer) and rarely shows class. My mind may be in the gutter but my porn shouldn't be.
I think there is a middle ground between features and most gonzo. As I said, I like a little set-up. A girl in lingerie or one already naked is good, but how about a some role playing dialogue? I like the old french maids outfit and the nurses uniform, or cheerleaders. It would be a refreshing change-up. Maybe a little tease shots showing those bodies in different outfits? I know Jane Darling could be shown much better than she normally is. And since Private goes to exotic locations, or used to, how about some tease shots in those locations?
It isn't possible to be more extreme than everybody else, that day is gone. Going to more soft focus, artsy stuff leaves you with only the couples market. But good hard sex that isn't demeaning, with some tease to high-light how beautful these women are seems like a good niche.
I used to buy EVERY private Film and Triple X Gold that came out. I loved the photograpy and ultra-sexy women. I particularly liked Draghixa in Forbidden Desires, what a sexy plot. Well, I am talking about the period of time where private was the Gold Standard for Gonzo and beautiful women and yes, they were the VHS days. I had superb Sony Pro SVHS player recorders and a global SVHS PAL/SECAM/NTSC player. Equipment which did screen captures, slow motion and frame by frame advance, overlays, merges, with infinity variable speed control, High-Definition and freeze frames of much higher quality than I get with digital. Digital is okay for not having to rewind, etc., but for color saturation and definition I don't think I have seen anything close. I don't have anything larger than a laptop these days because of mobility and work.
