I know that in the past that I have not had a problem with this another posters seem get it to work fine. But lately I have used the link link( how else could I put it?) that is on the bottom left corner of every post with strange results.
Once I tried linking to a specific post further into the thread but the link kept going to the first post in the thread. Other times it goes somewhere else, but not to the intended post.
The other day I wanted to just go to the thread (as one of the examples shows) and instead of the 1st post it kept going further into the thread.
What is up with that?

I'll have to look at it to see if something is "up" with it.
This doesn't sound like it's working correctly. But I'll look at it.
This does sound like it's working correctly. If you have visited/read a thread the forum software keeps track of that. It keeps track of the date and time of your "reading" that thread. If you subsequently go back to that same thread it will automatically redirect you to the newest posts since the last time you visited that thread. But for someone that's never been to the thread they will be at the beginning of the topic. So the behavior is different depending on the person browsing the site.
The purpose of the links link is to make it easy for you to provide links that other people to go to a specific post in a thread or to a topic.

I do understand the purpose and as I said it has worked well for me in the past.
To clarify I do what to make sure that I have described the issue correctly.
Let's say I read the 1st post in the thread and another's posted on the thread the 1st time. I may even make some posts into the thread. Then at a later date, in another thread I wish to link back to a post in the 1st thread, either to one of my earlier posts or someone else's. That were the problem seems to occur.

Please copy/paste the link that you're using. I tested it and it appears to work properly. The link will help me diagnose a problem.
