It's a problem occurring more and more often and maybe I'd better take care of it sooner than later. My keyboard, when i take it out of sleep, doesn't work sometimes. Not often, but maybe once out of every 10 times. It's a problem that has been getting worse and worse for months. It's a USB with one of those adapters. How difficult would it be to fix? Should I get another adopter. The keyboard is new.
What kind of adapter? I seem to often read about difficulties with USB keyboards. Usually, the solid solution is to use a PS/2 keyboard if possible. Does your computer have ports that look like this? : (hmm... Upload Image isn't working for me ... I'm getting a blank white page ) Anyway, I understand some computers no longer come with PS/2 ports. If yours has them, instead of considering another adapter, how about considering another keyboard? Other than that, often I read a recommendation to uninstall all USB hubs, etc. Reboot, let Windows find them and reinstall drivers. I cannot vouch for this myself, but where I've read it many times, the writers are not fly-by-night types. If nothing else, ... it can't hurt.
Sorry, I saw USB and adapter I was thinking wireless. I suppose it's possible the jack or adapter could be flaky. Are you plugging/unplugging it a lot? The test for that (IMO) would be wiggling it or unplugging/plugging it back in the next time the keyboard doesn't work, and see if that solves the problem.

I guess what i want to know is how much of a job is fixing the jack, as that sounds like the worst case scenario. Can I do it myself. It looks like it's attached to the motherboard when I open the case, but I don't really know shit about it.

Why don't you just ditch the adapter and plug it into a USB port? (You might need to go into the BIOS options at startup and look for an "enable USB keyboard" type of option.)
Don't soldier to a motherboard you aren't willing to fry. If it's a junk computer and you can lose it with no problem, then go ahead. If you can't risk it--don't. Most modern stuff is surface mounted and soldiering can be tricky and difficult. Edited by - jayo on 10/12/2007 8:00:16 PM
The purple port is for a PS/2 keyboard. A new one is probably in the range of $10. At swap meets, I've seen them used for a dollar. Bought them brand new for $5. You might even have a friend with one laying around, that you could borrow. I suspect that this might be one way to fix the problem. Just curious - why use a USB keyboard?
Y'know... I forget why. I read something in their forums that didn't sound so good....maybe that was about Thunderbird... I don't know. :) I'd have to re-read, and look around to see if I ever had a reason not to upgrade. Maybe it was because I use Win98?
Are you sure it's the jack? Have you tried another keyboard? It would sure be cheaper just to buy a cheapo keyboard and try it out than to start tinkering with the jack. And yeah. You could just get a USB converter. Should work. Just put the converter on, turn off your computer and plug it into a USB port. I should take my own advice. My keys on this keyboard get weird sometimes and end up entering shit I didn't even type. I come back and look at it later and think "WTF?". That's why most of my posts are edited.
