I remember reading about something on here a while back that was a program that would download entire websites (like pics, vids) automatically where you wouldn't have to look at each pic, right click, etc. i looked though past posts and can't seem to find it though. anyone have any idea what i'm talking about? has anyone used it before?
Do a Google search for "download manager." Just be aware that some sites will disconnect you and cancel your account if they detect you doing a mass-copy.
If you want something with lower impact than downloading the entire site, there is a firefox add-on called "downThemAll" that will download all images that are linked from a single page. This is pretty good for looking at image galleries.
I use "downloadthemall" for pictures, "imagegrabber" and Linky" for image hosts and "ReGet" for videos. Some sites make it very complicated though. I remember spending ages trying to get all the pics from Club Jenna but gave up in the ened.
GetRight is a really good download manager for PCs. It may or may not be exactly suited to the types of downloading that you do, so you can try it for free and see. It's "annoy-you-ware". It never times out, but nags you from time to time to register. Almost all features are available in the free trial.
You can limit how many connections are made at one time and the bandwidth those connections consume on your network connection. You can also queue up downloads and do them later if you want. You can build enormous lists of things to download; thousands if you want.
It's got a browser mode where you give it a URL (like a page) and it shows you all the images and links on that page (as text). You can then just highlight the images you want, hit a button, and they are added to the download queue.
GetRight can even download numbered sequences of images (or anything else). You give it the URL, tell it where to place the numbers, and tell it where to stop and start; it does the rest. You could easily download entire image sets this way if they are sequentially numbered (most are) and you know where the sequence begins and ends.
As usual, I'm not associated with GetRight at all. I'm just impressed with the program, so I'm sharing.
I'm aware that such programs exist. What I would say to anyone planning to use them is to make sure you consider what in the hell you're gonna do with all of that stuff once you have it. You'll undoubtedly get a TON of crap that you don't even want. And I can tell you from experience that just trying to sort through a few thousand images to separate the keepers from the junk can be extremely time consuming and isn't fun at all. It's going to be time consuming in the long run either way but at least if you start out with only the images that look interesting to you, you actually might save some time.
I couldn't agree with you more. I used to download hundreds of thousand of pictures in a kind of 'let god sort them out' way of thinking. If I visit galleries today, I probably select no more than 10% tops. I know exactly what I'm looking for in a photo now.
Teleport Pro or Ultra work well. If you want to strip a membership site, be sure to enter password and login info where provided, or else you won't be able to get much. I also forget what sites can't be stripped. But there's more programs that will do it.
