Time and time again there has been accusations here that the AVN Awards are fixed.
The noms go to advertisers and only to them.
This is proof that this is not the case.
We recieved 11 noms and haven't advertised at all.
We are a new company putting out the best product possible, we just don't have the extra money to advertise.
But after the first of the year, we plan to budget for that.
I am extremely happy to say that everything we have made so far, has sold out and has been in for 2nd replication.
Bangin Average Joe was something we did because of the people on ADT asking for it, it sold really well.
Viva La Bus and Miamis Juciest, Dirty Sanchez productions sold out in 2 weeks.
It is an honor to be recognized for hard work.

It doesn't prove anything. It's not about the noms. It's about who wins. Also, for the most part, your company is competing in secondary categories ... you're not really battling Wicked and Vivid and SexZ so much.
Also, advertising in AVN won't do anything to help your sales. Spend more money on ADT!

Yeah it's not like you're in any way affiliated with Vivid either. I mean it's not like Hirsch has anything to do with Pulse or something.

I really don't know, how is Vivids content?
Do they turn out good hardcore content, or is just pampered down "we have an uber contract girl" type deal??

Regardless or whether they are secondary categories, aren't there about 20 entries per category?

proof that the AVNs are fixed...
Lexi Belle nominated for Best New Starlet this year...
20+ DVD releases in 2006....
yea yea... i am sure there will be those of you that say it's up to AVNs discretion and whatnot and there's no set deadline dates or whatever. blah blah blah. but this is just insulting our intelligence and complete bullshit.
Lexi has been in the adult biz since 2005! (making her eligible for the nom in this category for 2007 and 2008. alot of the other girls in this category aren't exacly new either, but this nomination stands out the most as proving once again that Best New Starlet category is a complete sham.
didn't they think she was a good enough performer to be put in a more suitable category, like Best Actress or Female Performer of the Year.
fucksakes, does it take something this obvious to show that the awards are just a complete subjective jackoff? the AVN Award Show continues to lose credibility.

Well, at least they nominated Jenny Hendrix in the performer category and not as a newbie.
The truth is that it's really like a kindergarten contest where everyone has to get a prize because all the parents think they're little tiger is the most special little tiger in the whole wide world, and if the kindergarten upsets some kid because they don't give 'em a toy, the parents will yank the tyke out of there ... and they'll go out of business.

Pulse distributes my product.
Pulse distributes Vivid.
Hirsch does not own Pulse.
I have absoluty nothing to do with Vivid.
Nothing!
I am in no way affliated with Vivid or any other company that Pulse distributes.
I must say Nate, you are a good guy, but you talk like you have inside information that is completely right, yet it is completely wrong. I think the word is pontificate.
No offense meant, yet you are the one who says these awards are fixed, and I am here to tell you that is not the case.

I disagree.
We may not win anything but we were recognized for at least making a quality product and for our hard work.
Plenty of people win who sure don't deserve to win, that goes for all awards shows.
I would love to spend more money on ADT, which I will in 2009, so buy some of our movies so we can!

It will never come out because Jim Kohls and Mark Hamilton are the sole owners.
Hirsch has nothing to do with Pulse except his product, like mine, is distributed here, along with 50 other companies.
He doesn't own even 1% of this company.

Maybe they are throwin a bone out so they stop looking bad in hopes that people will stop talkin shit...
because it's been proven year after year that they are fixed and the companies that spend the most money wins. You pay 10K to 20K for a booth and then you pay an extra 5K for a dinner table just to get your award.

Hey Howard...since I got your attention....
When you go to a site that has all the Reality Kings or Cezar Capone episodes available for free download and then you look over and see a Fling.com ad, how does that make you feel?
Why don't you ask the higher-ups at Reality Kings/Bang/NastyDollars to stop supporting piracy via Fling.com. Or does RK/Bang make more money via Fling.com than they do via DVDs? I know a lot of retailers that would like to know why Reality Kings financially supports piracy sites while expecting brick and mortars to stock their DVDs.
While you're at it...next time you meet with Pulse will you ask Kohls and Hamilton why they distribute Penthouse DVDs since Penthouse is just about the #1 supporter of piracy via AdultFriendFinder?
Oh and while you're putting over how "legit" AVN is...why don't you mosey over to AVNAds.com and see all the piracy sites that AVN is supporting.
Money Talks is right...Money Talks...integrity walks.
And yes Crucifixo Jones...I know I sound like a broken record.

^ nateglass: your discussion of AVN supporting piracy is starting to appear in literally every thread in which you post.
It's starting to feel like you're a poster with a single, repetitive agenda, also referred to as a "troll". Perhaps you're familiar with the term.
It's not the topic that's the problem. You bring up good points. It's bringing it up in any and every discussion that you're a part of, that's going to get you in trouble.

In my defense...
I have brought it up in a total of 4 threads.
This thread, which deals with AVN's legitimacy, thus I think pointing it out was a valid point. Which you mentioned and I appreciate.
The other thread where Mike South was ripping AVN's nominations and Eli Cross was once again defending how legit AVN is. Again, I think it's valid to bring it up in that discussion.
And a thread about porn being format driven, where Mike Quasar turned the thread to a discussion of piracy, in which I felt it was relevant to mention that AVN is supporting piracy.
The other thread was a discussion of Brazzers, where I pointed out that Brazzers is a huge supporter of piracy.
I feel where you are coming from. But, it sounds like to me, you're saying "don't blow the whistle more than once"

Simply mentioning the words "AVN" or "Brazzers" doesn't mean that we want to hear your rants about either supporting piracy. Threads DO have topics. There was a thread about AVN nominations in which you ranted about piracy. Believe it or not, that's off-topic There was a thread about Brazzers' girls where you brought it up again. Again, off-topic.
Like I said before, if you feel so adamant about either supporting piracy, start a thread and confine your crusade to that. It's getting to the point where no one can mention either without your attempting to turn the topic towards their alleged support of piracy.
I also had no idea that Lexi Belle being nominated for Best New Starlet somehow proves that the AVN Awards are fixed. I read some absolutely ridiculous things here nearly every day, multiple times a day but that one might be the winner this week and it's only Tuesday. I mean, maybe if she won, but I don't think she even has a legitimate shot. Her nomination is a throwaway honor AT BEST yet it somehow proves that the whole show is rigged? I can see why people at the mag don't bother to respond to such allegations...

@nateglass: see the first paragraph in CJ's post above.
The connection in a couple of those threads to your topic was thin at best. Especially in this thread, you really made a huge jump from "Steve Hirsh is a part-owner of Pulse" to "AVN supports piracy via AVNads".
[edit: i did a fuckin' shitty job of cutting and pasting sentences together. fixed.]

Skronk,
I'm confused about something, and maybe you can answer me. The subject of Best New Starlet being "fixed" has been coming up since I ran the mag, but I've never exactly understood who was supposed to be doing the "fixing."
Going back 20 years, four girls were contract stars when they were nominated, and one of those was out of her contract by the time she won. Since it's all supposed to be about ads and money, who precisely is putting in the fix?
I know Skeeter likes to claim he sent Bridgette in to blow or fuck all the editors before she won in 2000, but if that's the case, she missed my office and the ones in my row. I kept waiting for someone to offer up that kind of "bribe," and it never fucking happened once, so I don't know what I was doing wrong.
I digress; since the large majority of Starlet winners aren't affiliated with any one company or advertiser, and since the large majority of voters are anonymous and out-of-state reviewers (i.e. difficult to "bribe"), who, in your mind, is rigging the contest?
I'm not being facetious, I've always been curious about this because it never made sense to me.
Oh, and just to point out how things can pass you by in the industry (and believe me, it's worse being at AVN, as I've explained in other threads), I've never heard of Lexi Belle until this year's "AVN is rigged" stuff started, so it's entirely possible she slipped under their radar until this year. It's nothing agains Lexi, I'm just pointing out that people can go unnoticed for quite a while.

Only someone who has never had to deal with furious company owners screaming at the top of thier lungs because they lost categories they felt they should win could make this claim. Skronker, I respect you, but when you devolve into simplistic arguments like this, I have to tell you, dude, you really have no clue what you're talking about.
If you want to sit down and have a long lunch some day, I'll address every argument you want to throw at me regarding these awards, but you can't really, honestly believe it's this simple? Go back and see how many awards Adam & Eve, Metro, Sin City and Hustler won last year and then tell me everyone gets their prize.

Eli, I'm sorry but I don't think it's acceptable that people writing about porn, reviewing porn, handing out awards don't know a performer that's been in over 150 movies and is very popular. Lexi is 73 in our top porn stars of all time (all time being since 2000 when we started tracking searches.) She's 35 in recent searches.
The logic of things passing them by would mean the awards aren't fixed simply according to ad dollars, but also by who makes themselves known to AVN (often done with ad dollars, booth presence at their show$$, etc.)
Objective awards are not possible. But an open process with clear cut rules goes a long way towards legitimacy.

This is part of why I only conduct adt business via email. They do this over reviews too. Tolerating this unprofessional behavior is part of the problem with this industry.

I swear I'm not picking on you intentionally, Skronker, you're just posting a lot of stuff in here that kind of pisses me off. Just because awards don't matter to you doesn't mean they don't matter at all. I'll assume for the moment you aren't including Best Gonzo as secondary. Let's talk about some of the others, though.
Would it surprise you to learn that there are people who get really passionate about Best Tease? Who argue about it and fight afterwards about who should have won what? There are and they do. I personally never voted in the category because I don't care, but I quickly realized my opinion wasn't everyone's opinion.
Now let's talk about things like High-Def production and High-End All-Sex release. As someone who's nominated in both categories, I can tell you, I Care. I'm still pissed we didn't get HD Production for Upload.
And that kind of seques into the discussion about Amateur release, MILF series, etc. I recognize that there's a lot of complaint about how many categories there are, and believe me, I fought that fight when I ran the magazine. I argued every year to strip categories I thought were pointless -- mostly sex scene awards -- and got quite a lot removed.
But for a lot of categories, I get it. Believe it or not, some people work really hard on DVD Extras. That wasn't an also-ran award for us on Upload; we'd put a fuck of a lot of work into those two full discs of extras, and we wanted that award.
And we got it. The only award in the industry to recognize that effort.
And that's really the point of all those categories. You can't compare apples and Oldsmobiles. Where else are people who specialize in interracial or MILF titles or foot fetish or amateur going to get any recognition for excellent work? XBiz? F.A.M.E.? XRCO? Those end up being the same six movies competing for eveything because their is no depth to their categories.
Does AVN go overboard with it? Yes. I like the comment someone made in another thread about the nominees for Best All-Girl Threeway on a Red Couch being better than the nominees for Best All-Girl Threeway on a Green Couch. They get overzealous, and no denying it. But without all those categories, where ya gonna put MILF School?
See, Cezar cares, even if you don't. And again, these awards aren't for the fans. They're for the industry.
And congrats on the noms, Cezar.

This illustrates my point; they do know her, obviously, but is it possible that last year, when nominations were going on in September (She had around 25 titles released, most of them teen stuff reviewed out-of-house at that time), the discussion (as happened so many times when I was there,) over her nomination went like this:
Editor A: "What about Lexi Belle?"
Editor B: "Who's that?"
Editor A: "Cute little brunette. All-natural."
Editor C: "Does a lot of teen stuff."
[Editor B checks the database]
Editor B: "We've got her listed in 22 titles."
Editor C: "Let's vote on it."
At that point, a vote is held and the majority decides to hold her over for next year and see. She goes on the '08 pre-nom list, and the arguments continue with Editor A, Lexi's biggest fan in the room, pouting.
Now, it's not over. If Editor A feels strongly about Lexi, he can fight for her nomination again when the list is finalized, and if he feels passionate, probably get her in (anytime you see something with more than 15 nominations, that's what happened; a lot of passionate fighting).
He doesn't fight, so she gets held over and goes in the category this year.
You could argue that she's been around too long now, but is that fair to her? You could also argue that the editors who didn't know her should go look at her movies, but that kind of defeats the purpose. If the majority haven't heard of her -- entirely plausible in this scenario -- she hasn't yet made much of a splash, and doesn't deserve the nomination yet.
Following your hard-and-fast rules system, she never gets nominated. So what would you do?
It's really no more sinister than that. I know it's a lot more fun to believe it's a conspiracy or massive ineptitude, but really it's just the pedestrian bureacracy of a slow-moving, once-a-year award meeting the internet age.

Now THIS is funny!
I've heard this same rumor about Vivid owning Pulse, but even if it were true, if you think Steve Hirsch would lift a finger to help someone else's company win an award -- I don't care if they were distributed straight-out by Vivid itself -- then You Do Not Know Steve. To even make this argument is hysterical. It's akin to saying, "Tom Byron releases on DVD. Vivid releases on DVD. Philips owns the DVD patent. That means a nom for Tom Byron is really a nom for Vivid!"
Seriously, Pulse releases a lot of product. If a rising tide raises all boats, and they're only getting noms to appease Vivid (who, I might point out, got very few awards last year), shouldn't ALL the Pulse-distributed companies be getting a crapload of noms?

If you could get me a booth for $20k color me in.
Our booths and total expense ran upwards of $200k, which kinda proves you are not really correct with your accusations.
Vivid has paid 10 times what you are talking about with 5 tables and one year won 3 awards.
I have been doing this for 24 years and i have to tell you, what you say is just not correct. Period.

Hey Eli, I do know how seriously people take their nominations, even in the far-flung orbits of Best Hi-Def Teen Asian Midget Blow-Bang ... And I totally root for my favorites. But from most places you can sit, the endless array of awards for every conceivable micro-niche just looks like AVN trying to command more free DVDs, sell more tables to the awards, and make more people "happy" without really having to do a whole lot. It's not just me who thinks it comical. As a fan who views stuff with a sometimes hyper-critical eye, I really don't see that much material that impresses me as award-worthy, outside of a handful of studios and a couple dozen notable shooters with enough genuine personality to make their stuff with a little extra spin. (Talking gonzo here).
I would say the same thing about the Grammys endless subdivisions of genres ...

no... not a conspiracy at all. just carelessness.
and if a girl like Lexi gets passed over in her first 2 years for the Best New Starlet nom... then it's time to find another category to put her in rather than just toss her in a category supposedly geared towards awarding actual new girls who have done a great job and made a splash in their very first year in the industry. let's talk about how fair it is to these real newbies to compete with a seasoned vet like Lexi. hell, with 3+ years of practice, of course her scenes are gonna be more polished and a more skilled performance.
nothing against Lexi... but carelessness put her in that category instead of one a bit more suitable this year. (not a fix or a conspiracy)

Eli, you got it wrong, it was 'best reverse cowgirl on a green couch'.
Confusing isn't it, all those categories?

i really don't care about the awards and this thread kinda sums it all up for me. It's a bunch of drama/hassle/etc that I don't want to get involved in so I don't even follow it. Other than Stoya's nom, I can't even tell you who's nommed for what. Not saying the awards are dumb or anything but I just don't get into it.
YMMV.
