I just got the 2-DVD set of the "Queer as Folk" Brit TV series. Unfortunately, it is Region 2 coded and I cannot play it on my Sony DVP-S500D player. I've heard of "modifications" that can be made to make DVD players non-regional. Does anyone know of such things and/or where I might find more information on the subject? Thanks for whatever you can suggest.

There are a few players that can be modified to be region-free with an obscure combination on the remote control, but most require tampering with the inside of the box... Try [url=466837]this site</A, it may not have the answers, but it may point you in the right direction. Since you're probably talking about voiding your warranty with an unapproved modification, I'd research patiently and carefully before doing anything...

It was sent to me by a friend in London - I assume it is available locally there in England. After reading the fine print, I've discovered that it is also in PAL format although I thought that wasn't supposed to make a difference in DVD discs. I also assume that it would play just fine on a computer-based DVD that allows software region switching. Guess I'm going to have to make another computer accessory purchase.

There is one called GIMME, GIMME, GIMME where a straight woman and a gay guy share a house. It was on BBC2 but finished last week. The gay guy was played by the male book shop assistant with Hugh Grant in "Notting Hill" - is this the one you were thinkg of?

Queer As Folk 2 just finished on UK TV this past week. Two parts only, but I did not watch it. It did not appear to be as controversial as the first series, did not read any "shocked" stories about it in the newspapers.
The UK equivalent of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY magazine is called "Heat" and they had an interview with the writers. In it, they said that Joel Shumaker (spelling probably wrong here) who did the last Batman movie was going to make a Us version of it for cable TV, but would have to drop a lot of the sex scenes and make the young lad in it older.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I am away during the week.
I am also sorry to say that the DVD is encoded in PAL region 2, so unless you have a code free DVD player the only way to get it would be on tape. You could buy the UK PAL tapes and get them converted to NTSC.
I might have been able to help you myself.
I bought a $600 TV standards converter "black box" but it was not as good as I wanted, so it went back and I got a refund.
Sorry

I have an NTSC (converted from PAL) VHS set of the original 8 episode series. A woman in L.A. runs a business converting tapes, which she sells at conventions and through mail order. If anyone's interested, let me know & I'll see if I can dig up the ordering info.
As for the show itself: It's absolutely the most intriguing, involving, and intelligent look at gay life in the 90's. Aside from the accents and some of the slang & British references, it might just as well be set in America. As Vince (one of the main characters) would say, "It's brilliant!"
I've seen the complete (1st) series about 6 times all the way through, and the first episode several times more. I've been showing it to my friends -- as well as potential boyfriends. (It's become something of a litmus test: When one guy I was dating didn't care for it after seeing the first episode, I knew he wasn't the man for me. )

well, why waste money to get a code free dvd player?, anyway, if u have a code free dvd player, u still need a multisystem TV to watch different region coded dvd video, ( trust me, check with the retailer who sell the code free dvd player, it wont work, it probably will cost you min 1500 to work on them) i own QAF dvd video region 2, but it work great on my PC.
note ; u need a region free DVD rom, most DVD rom under 5x will do, and u need a software like power DVD version 2.5 and below, ( dont waste money to buy them, get a trial version for 30 days, or real hollywood plus, i just spend less than 50 bucks to have them work perfectly and connect to my TV (NTSC ot VCR)..no distration at all, forget abt macrovision, or have someone to modify your DVD player, 1st, u will lose ur Warranty, 2nd, it might cuz deffect in long term, anyone wanna know the *tips* write me, i can help

Actually guys-
I purchased the Apex DVD player
at Circuit Shitty...I mean City
for 179.00 (US Currency) and because
is was manufacutered prior to 2/2000
it has a secret menu that allows to
bypass all regional coding and macrovision.
In addition, it coverts PAL to NTSC if you
tell it (in the set up menu) that your
television is NTSC.
So I ordered Queer As Folk from
amazon.co.uk and watched the DVDs!!!
The only glich is that in the PAL to NTSC
conversion, it squeezes the picture just
a tad. Not too distracting.
Also, this means I could order other
gay-themed DVDs, in Region 2 PAL format:
Jeffrey
Wilde
My Beautiful Laundrette
I Think I Do
(which is scheduled
for a region 1 NTSC release this summer.)
Is it worth getting the APEX as a second
DVD player? YEP!!!

I forgot to mention that
Joel Schumacher is doing the
American version for Showtime
and has no intentions of reducing
the explicitness of the show.
He may have to age the youngest character
though.
Joel just made Flawless which
is due on DVD soon!
