They started out as (and still are?) remote-controlled devices which respond to particular sounds which are triggered by the webcam viewer giving tokens or money or tips and such. I've read that it's somewhat sketchy, the sensation delivered by those toys vs. the over-the-top reactions some of the webcammers performers/experienced. So....it's probably a gimmick to earn more money.

Yes, it's definitely a gimmick but one that still works. Why? Well... it adds another layer of interaction between the model and the viewer. The customer has the power to control some stimulation. It's also the equivalent of showing your big dick to others in the room... like "Look what I just did!".
I don't cam often but have been asked if I have one of those countless time. I don't at the moment. My stupid boyfriend wants me to get one to try it out but I'm not into gimmicks that much, which is why I haven't bought one.

So I guess the guy giving the tokens doesn't mind because he's causing the reaction---still if I was paying tokens on a show I wouldn't like the looks o the pink thingf--also anything with wires sucks---like egg vibrators or the girl wearing a headset and mic---and the interruption and sound of her typing---awkward and disturbs the rhythm
