Hello

I been seeing more and more release that being shoot in Hi-Definition.

I was wondering what would a Hi-Definition movie look like on a standard tv?

Will it show up in letter box ? Fuzzy looking?

Or will it show up full screen and looking like a regular movie ? but the only time it would look better if you view it on Hi definition tv?

Anybody help me with my question, please......

Regular TV's don't have the connections appropriate for HD. Even the TV's that have component video connections don't have connections capable of processing a 1080i or 720p signal.

Right now, HD cable boxes and satellite receivers also have SD outputs on them. They will downconvert the signal to 480i before sending the signal to an SD TV. When setting up the receiver, you would have the option of how you want the 16:9 signal displayed on your 4:3 TV. It can either be letterboxed or cropped.

can you put this in more easier terms? I am not techincal.

are saying . it will look terriable because the standard tv is not able to hand the singal? Will iy look crop or in letter box format on a standard tv?

then if this is so, why are they putting shoot on HD? Alot of people will stay away from those title and studio will loose a lot of money . unleast studio's start offering two different format ,standard and hd on one disk so both worlds could enjoy viewing the movie without going out and buying a 4 thousand dollar tv . ....

Some (most? all?) DVD players will let you playback a wide screen disc on a standards TV either letterboxed, panned and scanned (edges cut off), or squeezed. If you watch letterboxed, then you're seeing it "as the director intended."

Shooting HD to be viewed on a standard TV can look very different from shooting SD. To see good examples of this, take a look at American Chopper or Town Hall . HD acquistion viewed on SD can also be virtually indistinquishable from SD acquisition. I've heard people rave about HD sports broadcasts (that they were watching on HD sets), yet I could barely discern a difference (if at all.)

There are some reasons that HDV (what most porn companies mean when they say shot on HD) might actaully look a little more compressed than it's older sibling DV (which is what most porn has been shot on for the past half dozen years or so.) I'd be surprised if the casual viewer would pick up the difference between the two (both good points and bad) when watching on a Standard TV.

So no it doesn't have to be letterboxed if you don't want it to be. On an SD TV set the image quality shouldn't be any different than what you expect already.

That was not an HD DVD. It was just shot with an HD camera before it was convertrf it to DVD (just like if they said it was shot on film, that doesn't mean that you are watching a film).

If the disc doesn't work, then it is defective (or your player is defective). If your player plays other discs with no problems, you should return the DVD for replacement.

No, you can't buy an HD DVD, but you can buy an SD movie that was shot on HD, or in the case of most porn, HDV.

This is really no different from buying a copy of a Hollywood movie on DVD. Just because they shoot film, doesn't mean they can't put the final product on a Standard Definition DVD.

OK - I'm going to try saying all of that a little easier than the guys.

There are several porn studios shooting movies with cameras that shoot in Hi Def. The movies are then often released in Standard Def on normal DVDs. You can watch these with your normal DVD player on your standard TV.

You will most likely see the movie letterboxed if that is the way it was shot and encoded and that is the default on the disc and your player. So you will see plain black bars on top and bottom.
If the movie is good and the disc is good, it should not look fuzzy at all. If anything, the picture should look at least a little clearer than porn that you are used to watching.

By the way , if you hate the letterbox effect - black bars top and bottom - then you can tell your DVD player to change that . As Tony said . Go to the set up menu on your DVD player (the menu for the player , not the DVD, you may have to take the disc out of the machine) and look for Video or Picture as an option . The different aspect ratios should be there so just select the one you want , and try the disc to see if that's more to your liking .

Edited : damn , I misspelled "there" as "their" . I hate people who do that , which means right now I'm hating myself . Not nearly as much as I hate the fact that Tricia isn't sitting next to me right now , though . I really feel like surreptitiously glancing over and oggling her boobies . Is that wrong ?!

i still don't understand. I am looking for HDV? on the cover of the movie? HDV is High def video?

Its film on hd, but then tranfer to SD .. what does SD mean ? standard digital?

If i decided to buy a high def movie.. that is HDV later if i buy a high def tv will i be getting the true quility of a HD ? Do i need to go out and buy a hd dvd player? and high def tv to get the good quility?

i guess i am still confuse. as i said before i am not technical ......

btw i hate letter box in porn . i refuse to buy them.

Regardless of what the packaging says, any DVD you buy will be a Standard Definition (SD) DVD, designed to playback on the DVD player and Television you already have.

Some of these DVD might playback with letterbox, but you can tell your DVD player to paly the same material without letterbox. You do this using your DVD remote to acccess the player settings menu. Select "pan and scan"

As to the rest, seeing HD on a porn DVD is 97.3% marketing hype. Other than having to ask your DVD player to play the DVD without letterbox bars (pan and scan) it will not effect your viewing experience at all.

The dispointment you experienced with your last disc has nothing to do with the HD on the package. Somewhere between the people fucking and the pressing of the disc, somebody fucked up, perhaps serveral times at several different stages, resulting in the fuzziness, blue halos and generall crappiness. There are many discussion threads on ADT devoted to similary afflicted titles. It has nothing to do with whether or not the title was shot on HD, or what flavor of HD/HDV was used.

so what everybody is telling me there no HD yet, because of the its to huge to fix on one dvd disk at this time. So isn't the studios false advertising? or misleading the customer?

I thought it was true HD, but it isn't.. it film and brought down to sd. I think that wrong .. and they should explain that more clearly to us...

That studio isn't lying. They shot their movie with cameras that captured it in a Hi Definition format.

The box most likely said something like HD Porn or something like that. It was shot on HD.

Either in editing or right after editing, they downgraded the quality to SD (Standard Definition). That is why it is on a normal DVD.

And BTW - Tony likes to say that there is no such thing as WATCHING HD porn. He tends to leave out the part that there are versions of some movies that are playable on PCs. Movies such as Rawhide and Island Fever 3. Although these are not normal DVDs that play in the normal DVD players that hook up to TVs, they are the equivalent of a DVD-Rom and you can watch them on almost any PC that has a DVD-Rom Player and decent speed or processing power.

No, what I said is you can't buy an HD DVD, and talking about a WM9 computer playable disc to a fellow who didn't even know his DVD player can play back 16:9 discs w/out letterbox bars, simply to counter something I never said, seems a little disingenuous.
This is just a taste of what's to come. Sony's got a $3500 HDV camera ready to go, they're just waiting wait a little more market saturation on the Z1. Once that baby's on the market, game over. Every asshole shooting on PD150 or VX2100 who can afford to trade up will have one of these $3.5K beauties, and they'll all be putting "HD" on their box covers too.

Of course making HDV look good takes even more finess than making DV look good. That's the price you pay when you compress six times as much data (10GBytes/minute for uncompressed HD vs. 1.7GBytes/minute for uncompressed SD) into the same 216 MByte datastream. And aside from LeeO "piston pounding" question from the other thread, the extreme compression that HDV undergoes at acquistion (something like 20:1) can never be undone, and becomes a real liablity when comes time to add another generation of compression for DVD playback.

This means more and more people having the same experience as hard4u, porn stamped "HD" that actually looks worse than what they're already used to. By the time in the den HD playback is a consumer reality, HD porn will be a joke.

IT is junk you get what you pay for and a good HD LCD is probably about $1000 for that size. I work in the LCD biz. And not to confuse you more but you still need a HD decoder or HD cable box with something that is HD ready or an HD monitor.

Tony - he was asking for information. I just didn't want him to look at a 'DVD' that IS WM9 and think that company is lying.

Also, I don't think HD porn will be a joke anymore than much of today's StandardDef porn is a joke. There's companies that shoot stuff that's better quality than other companies. The consumers quickly figure out what is better. It will be the same with stuff shot from the HD cameras. If a company does a bad job, avid consumers will stop buying it.

There's no reason the span in image quality of HD porn should be any less than between today's Vivid comps and Jim Holliday's best stuff.

It may well be even more pronounced.
If any company steps up to the plate and dares to make an HD production without making compromises in technical quality, the result could be amazing.
Fingers crossed.

We just need to get the BluRay vs. HD-DVD format war over and done with.

The only source for HD right now are digital cable (if you have the right plan), digital satellite or a computer using Windows Media 9 files.

you can get the 16:9 aspect ratio in DVDs.

Norcent isn't a great name in LCDs. There is a 32" widescreen Mag (Proview) LCD TV (RX-326) that I've seen cheap ($1,400 CDN) that has a great picture. kinda suprising considering name brands at the same size are 2 or 3 times the price.

I thought it would be way too big for our bedroom so I went with a 23" Samsung.

I got the samsung 16:9 as well for my bedroom for $599 at circuit city, it has dvi input. I run from my dvi ati aiw pc card to a switch on one side, and a samsung hddvd player on the other side of the switch to the dvi port on the tv. using powerstrip I can tweak the geometry to something near 720p for my hd files. Even though the tru hddvd titles are being heldup by the blue ray/hd dvd controversy the samsung has a line doubler that will basically convert any incoming interlaced signal to non-interlaced so even my old vhs tapes look great! Plus the player plays the new sacd's so for $200 it's not bad.

...or, in most US cities, broadcast television. If you have an HDTV with a built in ATSC tuner, people can receive HD broadcasts with the same antenna that they used to receive SD broadcasts with before they got cable TV.

The vast majority of scripted shows (non-"reality" shows) on network TV are in HD as well as the majority of sporting events.

So is it save for this technical dumbass named Vince to assume that I'll be able to watch Pirates (shot in HD) on a PC as well as on a "normal" TV set with a cheap DVD player that plays normal DVDs without problems?

Thanks in advance.

yes you'll be watch it the same way as any other DVD because it's exactly the same as any other DVD.

"shot in HD" makes no difference yet since you can't buy any movies in HD-DVD or Blueray format or a player. Until you can it's simply a marketing buzz word and an indication of which movies will be re-released later on. Bend over because you're going to have to buy yet another version of Apocalypse Now.

As I understand it there currently is only one way to watch HD recorded movies in their highest resolution. That's if the file is transferred into a High Def Windows Media File at the original resolution.

Thanks a lot, oatmeal. You know a lot for a person with such a low post count. Hey, just kidding, but you know a lot, anyway.
I don't know how good of a marketing buzz it is, though, because let's face it, I'm not the only technical dumbass in the world who thinks twice about getting a movie when he sees "shot in HD". (At least I hope so.)
Give me good DVD quality and I'm happy as long as I'd have to get an expensive player for better quality. (Though I said that about VHS, too, back in the days, and now I wonder how I managed to watch VHS... *shudder*)

Given that Pirates is a 3 disc set, it's a good bet that this is exactly what they are going to do. It's what they did with Island Fever 3.

So Vince, the probable answer to your question is that there will be a standard DVD that you will be able to watch in any DVD player that you own and that there will be another DVD that, if you're running Windows XP, you should be able to watch on your PC in high definition. Here are the minimum and optimum configurations recommended by Microsoft:

Minimum Configuration
(to play 720p video)
# Windows XP
# Windows Media Player 9 Series
# 2.4 GHz processor or equivalent
# 384 MB of RAM
# 64 MB video card
# DVD drive
# 1024 x 768 screen resolution
# 16-bit sound card
# Speakers

Optimum Configuration
(to play 1080p video with 5.1 surround sound)
# Windows XP
# Windows Media Player 9 Series
# DirectX 9.0
# 3.0 GHz processor or equivalent
# 512 MB of RAM
# 128 MB video card
# DVD drive
# 1920 x 1440 screen resolution
# 24-bit 96 kHz multichannel sound card
# 5.1 surround sound speaker system

You can find more information about WMV HD here.

Thanks a lot, Bill. Quite tough configurations but I think it should work with my PC. (Part of the components fulfils the optimal conditions, part the minimum only, if I remember the data correctly, that is).

Now I wish that I had sprung for a laptop a couple of years ago when I was buying a second PC. For "BCP:VOH", Im either going to have to move one of my PC's over by the big screen TV or buy a really long DVI cable.

now seems like a bad time to buy leading edge technology. Standards are either moving too fast or devices will be made obsolete by convergence. it's frustrating when you get your head around what's out there, where it's heading and what's possible now. (like cell phones, hd-dvd, etc)
