All the scenes on JJV are available in 1080p but I'm pretty sure a lot of them were upscaled. Is there a degradation in quality when you upscale from 720p to 1080p? If there is, I'd like to stick to the original resolution of the scenes. [Link] |

What I want to know though, is there a similar downgrade in quality when you upconvert a scene from 720p to 1080p? For example, Jenna Haze Darkside was released on DVD with a label that simply said, "Shot in HD." What does that mean exactly? Was 720p the upper limit on HD back in 2006 when it was released? Does that mean that they converted that too to 1080p after the fact? I wish there was more transparency on the JJV site for when they made the respective transitions from 480p to 720p to 1080. Through experience, I have also found that a quality 720p file looks just fine (both on my monitor and on my 32" flat-screen TV). I think its entirely possible that the originals were actually shot in 1080p (which I realize is your question and not being able to know your frustration). I suspect that the scenes being originally released in 720p on the Internet had more to do with saving bandwidth and giving the illusion of faster download speeds to customers? In any event, when I do my editing, I leave the frame-rate at whatever the original is (for some reason 24 fps is becoming more commonplace), otherwise you begin to notice artifacts in your edits (particularly when you create slo-motion edits of cumshots, for example) that don't manifest when you leave the frame-rate the same as the original file. I'm thinking that all the 4k stuff is being shot at 24 fps, and that they maintain that frame-rate for all the lower resolution downloads made available. Also, I leave the image size the same (i.e. I leave a 720p file the same size and don't try to increase it to 192 hex 1080). Again, artifacts and loss of clarity issues. One thing I will do is up my bit-rates on my edits. So, for example, when I edit a Brazzers 12,000 bit-rate scene, I bump the edits to 16,000. My experience has been that all the older 64 hex 480 stuff looks its best left alone at 64 hex 480. Any up-scaling just fucks it up. So, on my TV, for example, I do not allow 64 hex 480 to be blown-up to fill the screen. I watch these scenes, as original, in the slightly smaller window they appear in, and enjoy the vastly superior images that the original scaling maintains. Maybe it's for people that watch on TV or their devices display and don't want the black bars on the edges? And they don't look any better since you are losing quality going up if original material wasn't shot at 1080. Playboy also has been remastering some of their older video to 1080p and they seem to do it right. It's hard to tell right away when the original video footage was shot on film because it looks as sharp and clear at 1080 as if it was shot with a HD videocamera not long ago! [Link] |
| Jackie Treehorn Member It'll knock both your eyes out! 311 Posts 3/04 | Posted - Dec 6 2015 : 11:02PM I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they upscale old 480p stuff to 1080p, is because many review sites will subtract points from their total score if a site doesn't have all of their scenes in HD, or list that as a con in the pros and cons section at the end of the review.
