At that time I didn't know that you are, in fact, also known as Alek James Hidell, director of Slap Happy. After washing the egg off my face I have a question: You said that money has never been your motivator, but rather doing what you want to do, making the porn you want to make. What do you think of the hypocrisy of distributors (let alone retailers) who won't take your product simply because of the title? The content of videos like Rough Sex and Slap Happy are in plenty of other videos, just not as concentrated. How does it make you feel when videos like Dirty Trixxx or those of Redboard Video and Spunky Spur are easier for a consumer to find than Slap Happy? And finally, do you feel unfairly targeted by the porn media as a lightning rod for charges of creating "violent" porn? Videos with a title like "Slap Happy" makes anti-porn prosecutors drool. Not selling a title because they are protecting their own livelihood is not a hypocritical decision in my mind. The same applies to my rough stuff. I am shooting what I want to see. It is definately not for everyone, and I like it that way. If I could make 5 or 10 times the money directing features for Vivid or Wicked, I would rather get out of the business. It does nothing for me, and I would be horrible at it. Sex is more vibrant, more dynamic, and more alive for me when it is intense and very physical. I hope I reach my target audience without offending too many people. That is sure to happen, but it is not my intent. Brandon P.S. Distributors can sell whatever they want. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing. In the internet age, however, the consumer has all the power. Let's let the marketplace decide whether rough sex is a collosal failure or success. [Link] |

That's why some companies will put certain things IN their video, but not on the boxcover. Same goes with the title. Many distributors may also be more comfortable with specifically Mason's movies, as it is a female in a powerful position over the talent, not a male. It's perceived as different. To paraphrase from Bill, it's not hypocritical, it's being smart. I don't have problems with almost any specific act that I've ever seen in porn. What I have problems with is the ways in which they are sometimes presented. Unfortunately, in porn, a book is VERY often judged by it's cover. [Link] |

But the sad fact is that they are. Distributors and store owners are business people, not first amendment crusaders. Even though I don't like it, I can't say that I blame these adult business owners from avoiding movies with provocative titles. [Link] |

Bill: But that's just it..."If". What history shows is that there is no pattern. The only pattern in D.A. retailer crackdowns is that it's random. That's why I bring up BDSM videos being sold by the same distributors who don't stock Slap Happy. Are they afraid that because Extreme is more popular than ZFX that Slap Happy will get more attention? Would a DA or an undercover cop or a clandestine christian with no knowledge of porn even know the difference? [Link] |
