a question that some of you that work in the industry may know: how much gross profit does a company make from a single DVD? specifically i'm wondering about an average production that the talent is all receiving average rates. not talking about a feature. so, i know the talent needs to be paid. the producer. and maybe a photographer if the producer isn't doing everything himself.
let's use a few production companies as examples so we can elimated alot of discussion about what "average productions" are. so, let's use a non-feature DVD release by Zero Tolerance, Evil Angel, Elegant Angel, Diabolic, Red Light District or the like.
when all is said and done... how much total is spent on production and how much gross profit will come back in from sales?
(actual dollar amounts will be more helpful than percentages)
thanks.

also interested in how much profit is turned out from scenes shot for websites only? i am guessing that there are lots of scenes that come out first on a companies website and then on DVD. there just has to be a ton of profit here.
thanks.

Narcissus:
You're not getting any answers to your questions primarily because of the way they're written. Forgive me for being blunt - you come across as really dumb. The first thing you say is, "a question that some of you that work in the industry may know:" I thought, uh oh, this is someone who not educated. It was difficult to take you seriously after that. Second, this question has been asked and answered a zillion times on this, and other, sites. If you come to a place like AdultDVDTalk for business advice and answers, you're doomed. Spend a half-hour reading through this and other forums and you will learn something fast: people in this industry don't tell the truth, many are twisted, ethics don't mean much, and they're angry. I don't mean everyone; there are some great people. But there's a high-enough percentage (it's very high) to be leary (understatement), and everyone knows this. It isn't as easy as it looks. You have to be very smart to survive today. I don't think you have what it takes. Lastly, adult DVDs are on a fast track to extinction. There is not a future there. Adult DVD sales are plummeting. This knowledge is everywhere. But if you proceed, everything you want to know is on the web. Everything. Don't ask people you don't know and don't expect them to take THEIR time to coddle you. Do your own work. And don't trust anyone in this industry.

Since you seem to know so much about "this industry", do you know the answer to his question? The man didn't want a sermon, just an answer.

I couldn't agree more. Why do people who can't be bothered to figure out how to use their shift key deserve serious answers to their questions?
If you want serious answers then write like an adult.
(Hint: it makes sense as "who work in the industry")
Guess that makes two of you. It comes across as really dumb not to proofread your posts especially when you are picking on someone else's grammar.
How does that work? Information can be everywhere but I don't think knowledge works the same way.
EDIT: I was being mean so I removed something.

lenscap: He still hasn't gotten an answer and he won't because it's a stupid question. Then he doesn't even wait an entire day for a response before whining like a little boy on the beach who can't get the sand in his bucket. Whaa, poor me, nobody will answer me, boo hoo, come oooon. Give me a break.
conquistador: You're absolutely correct. Information is out there, not knowledge. I stand corrected.
Ramsey: Oh yeah, definitely. SERIOUS bank. Everyone in this industry is mega rich. Didn't you know that?
Narcissus: You're still looking for an answer to a question that can't be properly answered here. Asking here, and expecting a reliable answer, is not doing your homework and not the way to undertake research, but I don't think you get that.
"there just has to be a ton of profit there." Well, sure, if you can sell a few thousand units for $50 you will make "a ton of profit." If you sell a thousand units for ten dollars (that's what you'll get at the wholesale level...if you're lucky) you might as well go to Vegas to throw your money away; you will have more fun. With an oversaturated market - there are literally thousands of DVDs being produced every month - and competitors who have been doing it their entire lives - why do you think you can do better, or even as good, with zero experience? If you think it's easy to make money in this industry you're dreaming. I stand by my first response...except for my horrible, embarrassing grammar. Okay, I'm over it.

10 bucks a piece is being very generous for DVDs. I spent several years ordering for a porn shop here in Toronto and 6 (or less) dollars sounds more accurate.

Ramsey: It was a joke.
Narcissus:: Your expectations were clear when you said: "there just has to be a ton of profit here."
I compliment you on on using "who's" instead of "that's" in your last post. It was noticed. Good going!
You are, apparently, missing the point of my posts entirely.
I agree with conquistador. It makes you appear juvenile not capitalizing the first word of each sentence. Obviously your shift key isn't broken because you manage to capitalize the names of companies.
And grammar and spelling like "...so we can elimated alot of discussion..." doesn't help either. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. I'm just saying it that way I see it. I'm a very cruel person.
Don't be fooled by "new member." I've been around a looong time.

You REALLY don't get it. If you want to be taken seriously, and you want to pose a serious question, write like an adult. It's not like you had a few typos. That was the first thing I explained to you why you weren't getting any answers. The very first thing.

And, again, you have not addressed my offerings. Okay, I was insulting; I'm an asshole. Sue me. I still took the time to write and (try to) make some points for you to ponder, but apparently you can't see those through my negative tone. Yes, it included criticisms on the way you write. It had to do with you being taken seriously (broken record); that was the message. Take it or leave it.
You're still the little boy on the beach whining.
Oh my god, you called me a homo! Ouch!
You didn't like my compliment? My feelings are hurt.

As I said, take it or leave it. Each time you write, though, you cement my point that you don't get it.

Steinfeld had the "soup Nazi" we have the "grammar and punctuation Nazi" .
You should feel special.
BTW, in the upper left hand corner of any page here in the forum, there is a search link that works pretty well.

You might want to wait a full day before you follow up your question with this:
c'mon, you're kidding me. someone knows something don't they?
More importantly, if you do a search, you'll find fairly quickly that this question has been asked a bunch of times and never 100% answered. There's a lot of competition in the adult business, and most companies inflate their sales figures when talking about them... some more than others.
If we won't say how much the movie costs to make, it's not going to be likely that we say how much money we make off of it.
I only know of 1 publicly traded adult company... you should look for their financial reports somewhere.

Let's see, both Private and Beate Uhse are publicly traded and produce pornmovies, so go and read their financial reports. I am sure there are some US porn companies publicly traded too. There are a few more publicly traded pornrelated companies over here, but I am not sure if they make DVD's or are just toys, internet, payment processing and such.

Narcissus, you should be able to answer your questions on your own. It's just basic mathematics. If it cost you X amount to produce a dvd, and you sell Y units for Z dollars total... all you have to do is add up the numbers. Obviously the numbers in each category will vary for each production/company. It sounds like you just want to know how many sales various companies make off their products/productions, and I doubt very seriously anyone is going to give you that information.

Mod:
I'll run through a few quick things for you guys. Specifically: Narcissus, PornoHolik, conquistador.
1) Capital letters aren't required, but they're appreciated. Putting the extra time into your posts to use correct capitalisation, spelling and grammar will however make your post more readable to others and in turn they wull take your posts more seriously.
2) Bitching about others' grammar and spelling on the internets always leaves you open to a backfire when you typo something yourself. This happens almost every time I see it. It especially backfires when you're bitching about someone who happens to have English as their second (or third, etc) language, or people who use British/Canadian/Australian/etc English. (ie "capitalisation = capitalization", "aluminium = aluminum".
3) Being blunt to the point of "you come across as really dumb" and other rudeness is a breach of forum ettiquette. It's up in the top right of the page. Repeated breaches of the ettiquette will get you deactivated by the site owners. We all have better things to do than play schoolyard teacher. This includes calling each other "dumb", "uneducated", "homo", "idiots", etc. You have been warned.
4) Yes, ADT is a porn discussion board. It doesn't mean it's a FFA one. Go elsewhere for that kind of discussion.
Now I'm locking the thread, since it's just devolved into a shit-slinging match which is now finished.
I hope we're clear on that.
