Little did I know that the major studios shoot several versions of a given porn movie.
And here's me thinking all they do is get the scissors out to make a hard-core, soft-core.
Why opt for separate versions?
Why cannot heavy editing do the job?
Love to know.
Regards, Rump.

This is primarily done in order to sell movies for cable and hotel distribution. It appears that, for the most part, a different camera angle is often used of the same action in order to awoid showing penetration.

In other cases it appears that they just shoot additional footage from the other angle of the basically the same thing (kind of like doing another "take").

I would think that just trying to edit out all penetration shots would often make for very short scenes.

I've seen alot of hardcore and softcore versions of the same movies. The softcore footage, as Bill said, usually has shots where you can't see the penetration. But those versions also usually fake an internal cumshot, with the guy pretending to come inside the girl and the scene ending.
Sometimes, IMHO, the softcore footage is better that the hardcore because it has to be more creative. Sometimes it just sucks.
I think they should include some alternate footage on DVDs, so you can watch the same scene end in an internal or a facial. I don't care if the first is fake.

I've wondered for a while why the major couples market DVD companies like Vivid, Wicked or Digital Sin didn't include the softcore versions of their movies along with the hardcore one on the same disc, like when they offer different audio tracks on mainstream movies. Maybe it would take too much space on the disc ? I'd be glad if it ever happened. The frustration that comes out of erotica oftens turns me on as much as the satisfaction from a dp close-up. It would also be a great opportunity to watch more full-body shots & wide angles which I sorely miss on most xxx vids.
Just my humble request.

i should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky

It would definitely take up too much space. Vivid seems to be more concerned with the "extras" on their DVD than with the actual movie. I can't imagine them doubling the amount of space that they use for the movie at the expense of extras.

Vivid does sell the cable versions of many of their movies. I believe that they refer to them as "Adult Rated". I think that they can be found at stores like "Tower Records" and "Virgin Megastore".
