But I have something I wanted to talk about. First of all let me explain a few things.... I'm a 40 year old married mother of two working in an adult novelty store. We sell lingerie, toys and movies and we are located in Small Town USA. I love my job. It's retail so it can be hard work but we try to keep things light and have fun. One day we received a shipment of porn. About 400 movies to be exact. We have a process of checking them into the computer, removing the disc to store behind the counter and numbering the box to match with the disc. It prevents theft. While I was tagging movies I noticed a familiar actor and I mentioned to my co-worker. "That Evan Stone is in everything." And handed the box to her so she could take the disc out and put it in the drawer. She says to me, "How do you know that's Evan Stone? You can't even see his entire face?" Now, the smartass in me could have said alot of things about that. But the former smartassed dental assistant in me said, "I recognize his teeth.......and he has the cutest little diastema." Anyway, it got me to thinkin. I'm a big fan of what my customers call "feature" movies. Ya know, movies like Pirates, that are like full-feature movies with story lines and characters and whatnot. And I realized that while I know the names and "faces" of quite a few male actors, we rarely see them on the covers of movies like that. I use Pirates as an example because it has two of the biggest male names in the bizz. Tommy and Evan. But why arent they shown with the girls on the cover? I mean sure, Jesse Jane and Bella Donna, Jenna Haze...all the girls were terrific and fun to watch and they should get the credit due and be featured on the covers. But the only time you really see the guys is on the back of the box (if they dont cut their heads off) and MAYBE their names are listed. I watch alot of parody too and there was no problem with the guys on those covers. So what I'm asking is would the ladies be more interested if they knew which men were in the movies? I know my female customers know these men. They know who they are, they learn their names, they talk about the men to their girlfriends. I see them walking around the movie section and they'll pick up a title and look at the box and say, "Oh my God Cindy...this movie has Nick Manning in it. He is so hot. Larry brought this movie home one time and it had Nick fucking this girl and he......" And then they giggle about. So women are watching and they are buying and they do have favorite men. So what's the skinny? Why if they spend ALL that money on a production like Pirates are the men not featured when movies like Pirates are just the type MANY women would prefer to watch? AND I would also like to hear opinions from other women (if there are any) on this site. Would you be more likely to buy porn more often if you spied a leading man you liked? I've talked to a few of our regular porn buying female customers and they agree with me but my boss lady doesn't. She seems to think since the majority of porn buyers are men, it wouldn't change anything. So? What say you? [Link] |

If including males on the DVD cover sold more DVDs, you can be sure they'd eventually figure that out and include the guys. Often, you won't even find the guys names listed, let alone see their faces. Sometimes you have to go to a performer database to even find the male cast members listed. As an independent producer, I can tell you I get written instructions both in guidelines as well as feedback on my video submissions that tell me to reduce/minimize/eliminate the guys in my video footage and still images and focus more/exclusively on the girls. Early on, I got told that over and over again and finally learned what publishers want to buy. There is content that's specifically marketed to females and many of those DVD covers look more like romance novel covers. They not only include the guys, but they feature them. When female customers - purchasing power - represent enough of a market, I think you'll see more guys on the covers, but until then, the male dominated industry will continue to feature the girls on the covers. You should know better and you're completely missing out on our money! The crap that you "market" for women is just that, crap. It's like watching bad Lifetime movies with porn. *steps off soapbox* Another complaint I get from women is that if there is anything on the cover they do like, sometimes that's not even the movie they get. My girlfriend likes porn. She rented a movie once, something about "I fucked my midget step-sister" because she liked the cover. Imagine her dismay when she watched the movie to find it had nothing to do with the cover. This is what she emailed when asked the same question..... "Well, I'm not your typical girl porn buyer. I DO know, that when I used to rent it, I'd get all pissed when the descriptions on the box didnt even match the movie inside. It's like they banked on you being so ashamed of yourself for buying/renting such a freakish title, that you'd never come in and complain about their false advertisement. I showed them. more than once, and got one dude dismissed about his snotty fucking attitude toward me about it. It took a few times, but he WAS eventually dismissed for not passing along mine and others complaints, his general attitude, and just being a paste eating prick. I dont need, or even want a story line, especially not one that's going to for some gawd awfull reason keep someone in the movies clothes on longer. Occasionally something with a twisted story line is ok, but you dont find them much around here anymore. Like the ones from the 70's and 80's... Pandoras Mirror was good, I never got the chance to actually watch the Taboo movies, but thought they looked good for goodish fuck scenes... but for the most part I'm perfectly fine with movies that seem like a shitty casting call/cocktail party gone horribly wrong/right. As long as I dont see a picture of Tammi Ann and Ron Jeremy double teaming a midget on the cover, watch that fucker after excruciating badly done scene, and see 5 seconds of Ron Jeremy sucking his own cock, hear Tammi Ann's name mentioned in passing, and see nor hear hide nor hair of a midget of any flavor. I swear I rented one called "I fucked my stepsister the midget" no stepsisters, no midgets, no Tammi Ann, (she was on the cover)... I WAS PISSED... So yeah, if nothing else pornographers ought to at least be listening to all the customers. They're the ones buying the shit." Hi Rod, thanks for the welcome. No that's not what I see in my retail shop. What I see in my retail shop is Mr. Jones that comes in every Thursday for his weekly porn purchase. He might buy 3 $10 titles at a time BUT tronight for example one of my regular COUPLES will come in. And that couple might buy a nice piece of lingerie or maybe the new anal toy that we got in this week and then they'll buy one of our titles at $40-$60 titles like Pirates or maybe This Ain't The A-Team XXX. Do you know why? Because it has her favorite actors as well as his and it's something they can watch TOGETHER. I mean really I only bought Pirates 2. I dont even have Pirates. I bought it because I saw Bella Donna on the cover and I love watching her. But then I noticed Evan and he is so fucking funny and I've gotten over my sadness that my old favorite guy is retired, because now I have a new favorite guy. Anyway, I'll make more money off the couple who buy the quality over quantity. That's my point. I keep using Pirates as an example because they spent a shit ton of money to make it. It made Digital Playground a shit ton of money and they won a shit ton of awards with it. AND here's the thing, if they dont think they can make money off the women buyers, why the hell would they market a line of Pirate toys? Yes, my shop has Pirate and Eden toys that coincide with the movies and they sell. And talk about hypocritical!! On the first Pirates movie poster, Tommy Gunn can clearly be seen right up there next to Janine Lindemulder. So why not use him on the cover? Women love him, you can buy a cloned dildo of his penis. And you can't tell me it's all gay guys buying Tommy Gunn dongs. Anton Michael is shown on the Pirates 2 poster. But whatever, if they don't want our money to add to the millions..... How in the hell are we supposed to know what movies our guys are in if they're not even listed in the credits? I mean I could care less who's in Ghetto Booty Vol.10. to me most of those movies are just random fucking anyway. Dont get me wrong, there is a market for that.WE MAKE LOTS OF MONEY FROM THAT. But isnt there room for both? I'm just saying if you're going to spend THAT much money on one movie, at least show us the men too. Astro, I get what you're saying. But again if I dont buy a certain movie because I see Randy Spears is in it (not that I dont like Randy but he's not my type)you can damn sure bet I'd be likely to find one that had one my favorites in it. Just like with any other movie, I might not buy something with Rober De Niro either but that doesnt mean I wont dig up something with Gerard Bulter or Jason Isaacs. Unfortunately many of us have become accostomed to looking for the male performers in the subtle manner that they might be listed. Most assuredly. I LOVE me some Steve Holmes, James Deen, Mark Davis and Manuel Farrara. Women tend to view and desire men for different reasons than men look for in women- especially if we’re just talking sex or porn. For me, it’s not all about looks (face or otherwise ;) ). It’s often about chemistry and their ability to dominate a scene, the partner in the scene and even the viewer. It’s the unexplainable something that draws your eyes to them no matter what. The guys above have that in spades. And lord I love a dirty mouth! So I love watching them. Since most videos and search engines don’t list the male performers, it’s really annoying to find what/who I want to watch. I usually have guess by studio or genre and just hope to come across what I’m looking for. The men deserve some credit too. :) I do search out some female stars as well, like Bobbi Starr, who’s just plain beautiful and seems far more “real” than others. I know, we ALL know, that the largest consumers of porn are men. However, I think the industry is unaware (or perhaps even uncaring) about the huge “secret” market segment- women like me. Women who love porn. We’re not supposed to like it, watch it or buy it, but trust me- we are! With the move to the internet and mega sites and VOD- most anyone can view what they want to their “hearts” content, but that also means that there is little awareness as to WHO is really doing the buying. It’s kind of like sex toys- most everyone likes to think that most women don’t have any- but I don’t know a single woman who doesn’t have a collection. And in truth, we’ve had our own porn industry for years- it’s called romance novels and erotica. The single largest and most profitable genre in fiction. As my husband says “it’s just porn published” I think the industry would be well served to take a look at its women consumers and find out what we really like (not what they THINK we like), our interpretations and desires in our kinks, the kinds of “plots” and scene structures we’d like to see. Women have long been proven to be the true consumers in any household of ANYTHING… so we have the money, and perhaps we’d like to spend it on porn- perhaps those of us in the “porn closet” would love to see it become more acceptable and accessible to us. And one of the ways that can be done is by making the male performers more of a center piece of the marketing. Women can be every bit as horny as interested in watching porn as men. For years, porn was too taboo and a lot of women felt uncomfortable watching sex. That's much less the case today. The only thing really keeping the female audience substantially smaller than the male audience now is the lack of porn made that has a clue as to what women like. Like the OP said, even the stuff supposedly geared towards women is often ridiculous and not sexy. If porn was made with the thought of turning a female viewer on-and not just that thought coming from some out-of-touch man-and then that porn was marketed towards women, you'd see an explosion of female consumers. The most successful, profitable approach to making porn is one that barely exists today: Take the time and effort to find hot men-and a lot of them-to work in porn just like has been done with finding hot girls. Both are showcased to some degree and the sex is shot in a more natural, genuinely sexy way. Straight guys will still get to lust over the girls. But now straight women will have hot guys to lust over. Porn made to please men AND women can end up with an audience, oh, about twice the size as one made only to please men.
