As far as I know you can't use an currently used hard drive to make a RAID array, you must start over.  [Link] |

From what I've seen the real world performance boost is too small to make up for the added hassle, at least for normal desktop use. If your current drive isn't cutting edge then you could probably get a bigger performance boost simply by upgrading it to something larger and faster. [Link] |

It just isn't noticeable enough to be worth the money. When I made the computer I use right now I wanted to make a RAID array. Then I realized I would rather have 600 GB of space on 2 decent hard drives. I think more space over very slightly faster space is an advantage. [Link] |

RAID 0 on a dedicated hardware RAID card with a good sized cache will result in performance increases. However, unless your running something like a database server the real-world performance gains will be negligible. [Link] |
