Is this a thing? I've been thinking lately about buying some of my all time favorites on DVD, for the sake of having a physical collection. But I noticed, some of the older stuff is kind of hard to find, and some titles people are asking like $100 per DVD. Are these considered collectible now? Do people do that? I can't see why else anyone would charge such high prices for DVDs. Thankfully, a lot of the ones I'd be interested in are less than $5 each, I figure because DVD is a dead format and I would suspect most businesses are just trying to unload what they have left for whatever someone will give for it. Don't know that I see myself paying $100 for some of the vintage Extreme Associates titles, but they would be cool to have. Does anyone here collect the DVDs? Any rare ones in your collection?
I do. But I wouldn't pay $100 unless it was 100% unavailable and I really really needed to see it. I don't collect porn for the value of the disc, but rather so I will have a physical copy forever. Also, it's often the only way to see the film. The most I have spent on a movie is $60, I think. I tried to buy an Extreme Associates dvd for about $50 the other day, but the guy selling it wants me to call him on the phone...and that seems really shady.
Some at the high prices aren't even real. There are several sellers on ADM that sell rare discs for roughly $60 that are bootlegs they manufacture when you order.
^ Yes, for sure, especially to my neck of the woods. But the movie in question wasn't deemed obscene. I guess maybe they're worried because the company was indeed charged and prosecuted, even if that was for a different movie. I'm skeptical because I always worry that I'm just dealing with a dude that wants to talk to a chick on the phone about a weird porn flick.

^ There was only one time a seller wanted to talk to me on the phone. It wasn't for a DVD though, it was with an owner, for the entire content of a site that had been closed for 8 years. Conversation was short, to the point, and he delivered for the price we agreed on.
I don't consider myself a "collector" but technically I guess I could be simply due to the fact I buy them and keep them. Anyway, I guess it all comes down to availability. Many old titles from the 70s are cheap because some sellers have plenty of them and most porn fans have no interest in them. Some porn DVD titles are expensive because there just aren't a lot of them around even though they might not be that old. If the seller thinks there's some sort of demand for a title that seems to be in short supply they might jack up the price. Sometimes it pays off for them sometimes it doesn't...it all depends if there's that person(s) who want it bad enough to pay for it. ADULT MARKETPLACE is a great place to find old stuff and get great deals. I used to find cool old stuff from EXCALIBUR FILMS but they got to a place where I didn't like how they did business. These days I buy/stream stuff from ABEN. They have lots of movies I can't get on DVD and most times for a whole lot less. Not the same as owning a DVD but I care more about being able to watch certain movies than "collecting" a DVD. I guess I have some "rare" DVDs in my "collection" but they're rare because they had a low print run or are hard to find , not rare because they are classic or important movies. Most of them were cheap at the time but have gone up in price since.

Only issue I can think of with this DVD thing must be the fact that covers are part of the fun and those things take up space. Peoples into collecting books have a bigger issue, I think. So before there are some collecting breakdown in those part of society I can deal with. Having a physical piece is part of the fun to me. I have all my CDs and musicrecordedfavorite tapes and VHS from the 90s, too. So to be depending on software, I don't think so. I have had my share of trojan horses and internal breakdowns going on PC to be appreciating that fucking hysteria of getting rid of everything. I also been spending some time in some kinda cells for doing about nothing wrong and everything quite right, having nothing to do for a month or so, so those who say physical stuff will suck you in and make you stuck with it can start sucking my dick. I see those old DVD's selling on ADM for $100+ dollars, and i often think 'does anyone actually pay that?'.
If you do find a DVD that you really want selling on ADM for a lot, just a tip. See if that seller has other titles you'd like but at a cheap price. If they do, if you take the total cost as being across the whole purchase, it can actually make it worth it.
They sell some titles on ADM but their own site also has some of the best prices.
XRentDVD is their sister site but I was told sometime this summer WhackyDVD plans to redesign their site store to carry a wider selection of titles at lower prices.
I plan to place an order with them (maybe 7 titles I've been thinking of collecting) when everything is updated.
As mentioned, there's a few websites out there with classics. Personally I like to find little porn / adult stores and browse. Sometimes you'll find a classic gem, and I always like to buy from the local ma & pa stores to support 'em!
Not sure if this happended anywhere else but in the early 2000's (maybe late 90's as well) you could buy porn DVD's at NEWSTANDS in Brazil. With a magazine reviewing the contents and all. SO easily accessible for anyone (even those who shouldn't have access). I still own a few.
I guess you could call me a "collector" since I used to be a porn "archivist" - I used to own hundreds of VHS flicks (including a few which were seized and destroyed by the F.B.I. in the mid-80s era) but I was f0rced to purge 99% of my "collection" in late 2021.
Anyway I think real collectors are those who are ready to pay $100 for a DVD, something which I myself would NEVER consider, except for the past week (late Nov. 2022) since there is one specific DVD flick I would basically pay that price to own.
OF NOTE:
MOST DVD manufacturers will only do a limited print run of, say, 250, or 500 (some do them in a few thousands, like the Swedish Erotica re-boots and such) copies of any DVD title. After that they are discontinued and that's when the sellers start to hike up their prices.
ALSO: Some distributors will "sell" re-distribution rights to other manufacturers to give them license to re-print discontinued titles after their initial print has run out. For example, Red Light District (aka Platinum X) sold the rights to their film "Anal Romance 2" after their initial prints were sold out, and so now some sites still carry the title without any cover/art and it looks like a bootleg, but it's as close to the real deal as you can get once the DVD is sold out.
Some companies will have what appears to be unlimited supplies of their features on DVD which is why in most cases most distributors will sell those cheaper than other titles. When some companies re-released their "classics" on DVD/digital, complete with remastering and whatnot, they knew there would be a market for that nostalgia stuff.
However in the case of MOST standard porn releases from the Y2K onwards, it's basically a case of if you see it, buy it because it may be discontinued faster than you'd think.
Older titles being re-issued also suffer this fate for the most part, so if there's a title you are particularly fond of, and you find it at an "acceptable" price, my suggestion is buy it now because next week it may be gone.
The Covid-19 pandemic has also contributed to the sky-rocketing prices of adult DVDs since 2020, and needless to say the shipping costs. I myself used to purchase "regularly" through the ADM website (AdultDVDMarketPlace) but now it's $50 USD base shipping cost for one disc, + 0.75$ additional titles from the same vendor. Even if you buy them cheap, your 4-5 DVD order costs over $100 in USD (so easily $150-$160 in CDN money).
I did however recently discovered a company which is re-releasing older early 90s Western Visuals flicks in "double feature" format, i.e. two film titles on one DVD. I managed to score the Tiffany Mynx 1992 "I Am Desire: the true story of Julia Black" for the first time since I first rented it on VHS back in 1993 and never ever saw that film again (I believe that one was never re-issued nor digitalized officially).
Yeah before the pandemic (2020) I used to stroll to "local" shops downtown myself and rummage through their "cheapie bins" for hidden gems. I made a few of those shops really happy they had their 2 for $20 specials!
I once scored a Harmony title which, AFTER I paid for at the cash and got my receipt told the gents behind the counter that this specific title was discontinued and was selling for $50-$100 on the ADM website. They wondered how come it was so "special" because they themselves got it as an overstock title from a local supplier.
But yeah I used to love to support the local shops. They'd even put still on the side (reserve) for me seeing as how I was such a repeat customer.
It's a step up from the rather "horrible" transfers of the "original" Western Visuals originals (ex: "Night Of The Head Hunters", "The Heat Is On", or VCX's "Surfside Sex" for example), but it's obviously nowhere near those "4K" super re-mastered classics which are considered all-time best sellers ("Pretty Peaches", "Deep Throat", and such).
I actually have a copy of one of those titles as a "stand-alone" flick purchased a few years ago ("The Bride", aka "Bridezillas In Heat"). I will try to do a comparison and get back to you on this one, although it may take some time....
I got Tori Welles, Racquel Darrian, Christy Canyon and Savannah DVDs from ADM. I got them under 100 dollars. I got the first 5 where the boys aren't DVDs from the late 80's-early 90's. Mainly my DVD collection are from late 80's-early 90's
Let me start by saying I know this is illegal and I've never done it. I was a fan of porn starting in the mid-1970's. In the mid-1980's, I was a fan and bought VHS tapes that featured the underaged porn star Traci Lords. Of course, we didn't know she was underage at the time. When her age was revealed, I took a metal trash can, loaded up the Traci Lords tapes, covered them in lighter fluid and saved myself some time in the hoosegow!
Then, as an online infrastructure was being built, I saw Traci Lords stuff for sale all over the place. I cannot imagine who would be so stupid to buy that but there it was for sale and it certainly wasn't cheap. I noticed that countries who didn't consider sixteen or seventeen to be underage were still selling her stuff and it seemed to go for a premium. I personally know a guy who bought some Traci Lords VHS's in Canada and brought them into the US. Idiot.
There's a reason she was at the top of the industry but she started making porn when she was fifteen for God's sake. Most of the stuff she made was when she was sixteen or seventeen. Once I learned that, it was like a switch in my head turned on saying, "Dude, that ain't right!" People were paying premium because you couldn't get it anywhere else. I'm sorry, but there is no porn worth losing five years of my life (or whatever the penalty may be.).

Hence my name I got back into collecting after I realized society is perfectly fine with praising violence of any sort but god forbid boobies let alone sex, then looking to replenish all the DVD's that were stolen or destroyed by a literal crack head I allowed into my life and seeing some of my favorite stars from the early 00's fall off i really wanted to replenish them to (insert smart word for keep their existence alive) and i know as a collector of just about everything including comics, anime, (before they were cool) Model Kits...."Everything that screams Im a lonely loser with no life and haven't grown up and idgaf what you think of me" ill fall into Rare/Vintage adult collecting but based on my research and list building that has been easier done than said my Biggest upset rite now is Lez Vampyres VHS and Caligula DVD those are already quite rare in my eyes now. If you wanna go down this road I recommend limiting to DVD/VHS that YOU would want too watch like i wouldn't buy a scat video just because Cartmans Mom is in it but "1 Night in Paris" HELLS YEA (hey, hey, shes hot and knows how to move) anyway before i begin chapter 2 of my autobiography my wish list on 1 website alone is over 1000 so count me in on here
I remember a time when I was studying abroad (this was back in my university days) where there was a small adult store which sold VHS tapes. It was there that I used to buy a lot of older material all mostly from the 90s. Some of it Girl-Girl and some of it was Trans porn. Now this was in 2001. Thats when Trans porn caught my eye. It was rare but I found some great stuff there not just for Trans porn but Straight & Lesbian stuff as well. Sadly 2 years later I had to leave the country and had to dispose them off because I couldn't carry it all back to my home country. It was a sad little time. But what it did was make me appreciate the classics and the rare stuff a little bit more. And as time progressed I am now again living abroad for work and I can buy some of those titles to add to my collection. There is still so much more that I need to collect and its been a pain trying to slowly get back into collecting. I am also a bit of a nut where I like to maintain a DB of every title I own (recently that program got fucked and I lost the entire record which is a different story all together).
Collecting is a pain, sometimes you have to pay the price for the nostalgia and to an extent your own sentiments but I think sometimes it is worth it sometimes not. I do like the idea as @Simple Simon pointed out that try to club a few titles together to see if the entire cost of it actually makes the purchase worth it even if its for one or two titles that have insane price tags on them. It is a good way to even the cost out and just get what you want.

As for the movie, looks like an interesting title. Unfortunate to see can't purchase the DVD from anywhere. Adult Dvd Empire seems to have it for streaming though.
I am chiming in to confirm that the quality of those 6am classixxx double feature is far from perfect. It's essentially a straight digitalization of the original TAPES and thus offers no real mastering the way we've seen Caballero do to some of their "classics" re-released.
If anything the 6am classixxx feel more like the Filmco DVD re-issues so the quality is really dubious and basically feels like you are watching a VHS tape.
Still for most of the titles they offer, it is currently the only way to appreciate some of those long lost titles from the VHS days.
NOTE: The "I Am Desire: The True Story Of Julia Black" feature is the exact same cut as the VHS tape and that deleted Alana/Peter North scene (seen only as a brief 3-4 second shot in the opening credits) was not re-inserted.
How do you guys store your collection? With VHS cases and various DVD special packaging sleeves im getting extremely anal with wooden bookshelves grinding the bottoms and my lungs that pump out more smoke than London, NY, NJ, and Cali combined. I just wanna make sure I'm not getting to obsessive with building a plastic shelf with door and debating what goes into a safe immediately much like a "last copy" I just grabbed from Adult Empire that set it inventory to special order
When I first started "collecting" DVDs I kept them in a plastic container with a lid. That got expanded to 2 containers. Eventually I realized this "collection" was worthless to most so I bought those 256 disc folder holders at the dollar store, so I just keep the discs and DVD "art"/cover in there. 256 in one folder is easier to manage (and to move when being evicted - now a very common thing) than 256 DVD cases.
For "special"packages (i.e. Dorcel BoxSets, Private's "Gladiator Part 1" for example) I keep them in a bookshelf behind regular books and audio CDs so they aren't easily spotted.
As for VHS I now only have about 5 or 6 original tapes left and those are stashed behind another bookshelf behind other non-porn tapes.
When I had over 100 VHS tapes (the late 2021 purge took care of that) I stored them underneath my bed - the design was like a box you'd put boards onto to place your mattress. I'd just lift the mattress, move a few boards and store my tape collection there. Ah so many real artefacts in that collection forever gone!
Back in 2019 I found a place in Columbus, Ohio called Bargain Books. I have no idea if they survived COVID, but when I was there they had used DVDs, VHS movies, magazines, and comics--basically a collector's dream. I even found a copy of ROMP Digest.

Just discovered this stuff called "Un-du remover" off Amazon for getting rid of stickers, and it's BEAUTIFUL I was able to get stickers off even the paper leaflets with no damage or residue. Came across it on YouTube if you need more info. CALIFORNIA it's banned for you guys though
