A write up on VSDA Nominations says that the DVD Rawhide is 'visually astonishing video' and that it won AVN's Best High Definition Production.

I rented the DVD and found it to be very dark picture quality.

Do you need HD TV to get the best picture quality?

What am I doing wrong?

Have you calibrated your TV using something like Digital Video Essentials or Avia Guide to Home Theater ? Whether you have a conventional TV, projection TV, or HDTV, if your contrast and brightness are not set correctly, it can really affect your viewing experience. Also, make sure your DVD player isn't artificially "enhancing" the picture by some "feature" setting.

Where can those calibration tools be found?

I put together a computer to use as a HTPC; its MB has on-board nVidia video, which I have connected to a Sony TV via an S-Video cable. The TV's appearance is fine for broadcast television and DVD player and VCR output, but I've gotten pretty frustrated trying to get the computer's output to look right, using the controls provided by the vVidia driver. The scale of the adjustments seems too coarse, and it just seems like you could fiddle around forever without getting it looking right. Some kind of systematic, step-by-step approach would definitely be helpful.
