I'm mainly interested in alternatives to Excel. Are there any that are any good? My experience with Google docs leaves me tepid, at best. [Link] |

I'm used to entering something in a cell and getting a mostly instantaneous response (like moving to the next cell), whereas Google's seems to ease on over at a more stately pace. It reminds me of when I worked in an office in the 1980s--we had these great desktop printing calculators. You could type furiously and they'd keep up with you. But mine died and its replacement with a low-end piece of crap that lagged terribly, and it was off-putting because you'd be typing at a certain speed but the thing is printing at a slower speed that's out of sync with your hand, and the feedback would throw you off. You had to purposely slow way down to make it work, and it felt like slogging through mud. The Google version isn't that slow but the net result is the same. I haven't tried the other Google products. Most of what I do is in MS Access or Excel, and Excel more than Access. |
