After reading on here about the wonders of BTS footage I decided to check some out. I began to watch some Anabolic footage of Lauren Phoenix (My no.1 girl) and I had to turn off...the reason being that her cold business attitude, her talking about money and asking how much longer she had to be on set, her smiling and looking sexy for the camera then being cold and disinterested when it was off her, her wiping the cum off her face with a hanky and looking vaguely disgusted could almost kill off my lust for her. I much prefer her as a pure sexual goddess rather than canny business woman. I know this is the reality but pls, keep it away from me.

I have realised that I have no interest in what porn stars are actually like because I don't want to know if x person is a bitch, pushy, cold, illiterate, inarticulate etc.

Porn is about fantasy and myth...get too close and you will find out stuff you wish you didn't know....

BTS only serves to show what gullible chumps us porn fans are.

Only if you buy/rent for what you think the porn stars are. If you don't buy into the image and watch for the contents of the scenes, what you learned changes nothing.

Uh... "pure sexual goddess" is a performance. Real people have to deal with reality, which tends to dole out a lot of crap and severely limit the time goddesses can spend being purely sexual.

Given some of the stories I've heard, I don't blame any woman for having a cold business attitude when she isn't performing for the camera, especially if she's dealing with ethically challenged producers/directors. Maybe if you watched her BTS from some other outfit you'd see a completely different attitude.

My point is that I'm well aware of what a fucked up business the Porn world is....its just that I don't want to be reminded. It's an instant wood killer. If I actually stopped for 10 mins and thought about the porn business and what the gorgeous women involved have to endure I would never watch another movie....so I prefer to watch a performance and allow it to fuel my own fantasies.

I really, really don't want to see candid BTS anymore that most men want to watch there mothers get fucked...you know mum had to have sex to make you, but your really don't wanna see it or know about it.

Don't you just hate it when you find out your fantasy has a personality? And possibly without that personality you wouldn't have have been able tho have your fantasy in the first place?

Lauren and Arianna both had their game faces on; afterall, they were on set and working. Its just like athletes who are somber and serious on the playing field, but totally change personality off of it.

I'm just the opposite. I like seeing the girls treat it as a business, being professionals. It comforts me to know that they're not allowing themselves to be exploited, and that they're not victims. To me, seeing a confident, intelligent and self-possessed woman in the BTS only enhances what I see of her in the actual sex scene. The ones who seem like mindless horny nymphos actually turn me off. But then, that's just me.

I really like BTS or ASI (after sex interview ) or whatever it is called. The Roxy Jezel interview was nice.

I even like when it's don during a scene, for example speaking in different languages when a crew member speaks Portuguese or Czech or whatever.
Talking about something the girl is interested in makes her feel loosed up and involved.
It creates a nice atmosphere, although its a bit awkward when someone comes around the corner to stifle her talk.

Whether a female performer's off-scene persona seems to be that of a shrewd and calculating business woman, or a sex-crazed airhead nympho, or a psychologically damaged drug-addicted runaway, why does it matter? How does it change your experience of watching her get fucked?

In any business that can take a personal toll like porn can, isn't it natural that some consumers would like some perceived reassurance that everyone involved have the mental capacity to know what they're getting into?

"No pornstars were harmed during the production of this stroke material."

Of course, some like the idea of watching people out of their depths, going psychologically down the drain. (Meatholes)

The popularity of BTS footage and interest in the performers' personalities and private lives seems to me like a natural part of gonzo porn.
A lot of viewers like the sex to have some sort of context.
With features, contexts were established when the performers played their characters. That is largely lost in gonzo.
In gonzo they are now playing themselves, or rather the public persona they are trying to attach to their stage name.

I notice that some girls never do BTS... probably because they want a distinct seperation between their job and their private life.

I haven't been dissapointed in a girl yet, but I think I'm very sensitive to anything fake in general, a very critical entertainment junkie.

I like the Digital Playground and Wicked BTS because they support my fantasy that working in porn is fun and all people on the set are the closest friends. Just like in any Making of for a mainstream feature.

For me personally, when I'm watching features, good BTS is just funny extra footage, and as such it doesn't add to the enjoyment had while watching the main feature.

In the road-trip series Sex Across America and Road Trixxx , the BTS is really just extra footage in the same vein as the main movie.

The reason I liked the BTS in gonzo, apart from the reasons in my previous post, was probably (it's been a while) because that was the only footage that seemed spontaneous and not so mechanical. I prefer my porn to be mixed with a little humour.

If the BTS shows a performer or director being obnoxious or an air-head, it could well make me avoid that person in future.
Why they sometimes leave that stuff in is beyond me.

BTS is a natural extension of Gonzo but I think it only serves to fuel the fanboy fantasy that we some how "know" these women. I have no interest in these chicks at all outside of what I see on a screen.

Generally speaking most of the people I've met in my life who have worked in the business here in the UK have been pretty repellent. Porn is rather like Mixed Martial Arts...it attracts a very specific kind of person who might not be the kind of person you would want to spend too much time with, easy to admire, very hard to like its extreme and very, very real. Porn is mentally and physically hard. I would rather that BTS didn't ram the point home.

99.9% of women would rather earn good money without having to take a cock in the ass, BTS only shows me that even the chicks who I like to imagine love the business, the best most talented, sexy performers don't really enjoy it.

To me, porn is just another form of entertainment, and I get into my entertainment. I'm just interested by the process. I watch all the special features on mainstream Hollywood DVD's. I actually listen to the commentaries (the commentary on The Usual Suspects is one of the best ever), and I like to watch the making-of featurettes, etc. I know they're often made for marketing purposes, to air on movie channels prior to release to create buzz, and I still like them. I like watching music documentaries too, and I belong to online forums for some of my favorite authors. I just like seeing behind-the-scenes, even if it's not "real." I enjoy it, that's all. Nothing too deep about it.

I think that even the most seasoned anal performer approaches her scenes with some trepidation and bitches about it before and after. If it isn't the discomfort, then it's the preparation. But when they're in the midst of the scene and in "the moment", I think a lot of them are focused and enjoying what's happening. I don't believe they'd be able to deliver great scenes if that wasn't so. It isn't that hard to tell when someone is not enjoying things. The BTS can be a great addition to the feature. It's nice to see when there's a good atmosphere on set, and when the converse exists, it's interesting to see if the performers are able to rise above it. There are some directors that seem to have lots of tension on their shoots and others who seem to be having a party.

I'm with Pagoda on this one. I'm fascinated by 'making-of' materials on mainstream DVDs and can return to the movie itself without knowledge of camera tricks and sfx taking away from my enjoyment. Maybe it all depends on the viewer's capacity for suspending disbelief - porn movies are there to create fantasies, after all.

By the same token, I can appreciate Russell Crowe's performance in Gladiator, even if media reports suggest he is less likeable in real life than he is as Maximus. If a porn actress looks genuinely carried away with sexual enjoyment in a scene, why should it worry me that she's a cool-headed business-woman off set? More power to her for being able to throw herself into the scene and then detach herself afterwards. Please God I always take porn for what it is and never mistake it for real life...lol. We don't have to be jamesb23's 'gullible chumps'!

Welcome to the real porno world. I consider that kind of BTS priceless because it shatters the fantasy, the illusion.

For every Belladonna, there are a dozen Bella-don'twannas out there.

Alot of times it is an act. It's count your minutes and get a check. Sometimes I even feel the same way as a director because for every minute I shoot, I feel I spend twice as much doing paperwork, stills, setting things up, drinking beers, etc.

I always told myself I was going to have a good time on my sets. The minute it feels like I'm going through the motions or counting the minutes or it feels like a job, it's time to do something else.

It affects everybody sooner or later, especially if a girl's been on 200 scenes before yours.

It matters because it's the consumers' money that is ultimately paying to support whatever lifestyle the performer has. And I'd rather give my money to someone who has their act together instead of someone whose life is a mess. The longer someone keeps getting paid because their product is moving, the longer it will be before they have to face that they have a problem, and get help. Of course, I'm not talking about managed, recreational marijuana use, or else I couldn't watch anyone. I have made my own personal peace with Taylor Rain, and I hope retirement and marriage works out for her, but when I saw her talking about cocaine in Unnatural Sex 12 , I felt physically ill. I do wonder who she and Fayner are to talk when they make fun of someone else for having a drug or alcohol problem, though.
I don't really care to know performers' real names, or home addresses, or phone numbers, or anything personal like that. I'm not interested in stalking celebrities, and I live thousands of miles away from any of them, anyway. But it still matters to me to know that the beautiful girls who do hot scenes are actually decent human beings. I mean, it is not a credit to the business if too many people employed by it have substance abuse problems.

As far as girls with business-like attitudes go, I like to know that a girl will not allow herself to be cheated by possibly unscrupulous directors and producers. On the other hand, if she seems too interested in becoming rich, at the expense of enjoying the work itself, that's not really a turn-on for me.

I love porn, I'm an avid consumer and I buy for escapism. BTS works for some people as it allows them to feel closer to the action. For me it just forces me to confront the ugly reality of porn, the mess, the smell, the fluids, the physicality of it, the grinning ex cons, the airheadedness of the chicks (I am massively into intelligent women).

Its interesting that the Diabolic director say "Welcome to the real porno world. I consider that kind of BTS priceless because it shatters the fantasy, the illusion."

What???

All porn has going for it is the fantasy, the illision. It serves no other purpose. As much Chico might enjoy shattering the illusion because porn is his reality, I would question the wisdom of his delight.

If I want real, I'll go to a bukkake party.

The state and condition of the crew at a McDonalds does not change my distain for what I am about to do to myself (if life has come to that), nor that does that of the kitchen staff at a fine restaurant affect my enjoyment of the meal.
In fact the restaurant trade is another industry where a lack of dysfunction, desperation, drug use (as well as real professionalism, enjoyment, and life goal) in people would really hurt staffing.

I shoot these type of BTS simply because I always enjoyed them as a fan. There's nothing wrong with dressing the actual video as fantasy and then watching what really happens on BTS.

It's kind of like those SciFi movies where you see the actual movie then see how those special effects were made in the BTS.

I don't think it destroys the fantasy per se; however, it does make an impact to know that these girls are absolute fuck dolls but also real people no matter how fucked up some of them are.

Isn't the real benefit of BTS to really get to know the girls as they really are?

But... but... the fantasy of porn is about reality. Porn is a mental trompe l'oeil.

If all that porn has going for it, is the fantasy, why would I need it at all? I'm not brain dead yet and my imagination offers me tailor made fantasies, especially designed for me, no porn director can match.

some of you need to get a grip. you're WAY over-analyzing this BTS shit. Here's some reality for you: BTS is included on many DVDs for one reason and one reason only-- bonus footage.

BTS has nothing to do with pornographers wanting to provide consumers with some insight into the workings of a porn set or the minds of the performers. it's a marketing tool, pure and simple. it's a way of telling the consumers, "we're giving you more for your money."

you guys remember VHS right? how many VHS titles included things like BTS footage, galleries, interviews, and that sort of stuff? you know why you rarely saw that kind of content on VHS programs? because VHS is a linear format: if you wanted to see that stuff you'd have to wait till the end of the flick or FF to it. DVD has no such limitations. The chapters are almost instantly accessible.

pornographers want to sell product and make money. they are not, as a rule, free-sex advocates and they don't have artistic agendas, social agendas, political agendas, or moral agendas they hope to impress on their fans and consumers. they could give a rat's ass about what you want to see or don't want to see except--and this is a BIG except--in terms of what will motivate you to part with your cash.

in a capitalistic society, what's wrong with that?

Jimmy, I respectfully disagree with you.

I enjoy shooting my own BTS. Often times it's better than shooting the main scene. Often times it's the only time I get alone with the girls without meatpuppets present. Oh Lordy, imagine if I shot POVs. Especially when it's a new girl and I get to gauge what she's comfortable with or how far I can push her.

I'm not even sure if BTS footage makes any noticeable bearing on sales. I certainly don't buy movies because they have bonus footage, but it's always a nice bonus to have nonetheless. Unfortunately half of my movies has no bonus footage because there's no space for it. If it was my perfect world, I'd have dual disks: One with the movie, one specifically devoted to BTS. But then again, I started in this industry shooting BTS for Extreme and Anabolic as a webmaster.

I personally think that a 'real' account of BTS gives people insight on how videos are made and what the girls are all about. That to me is pretty fucking precious in the overall grand scheme of things. I'm sure alot of people will disagree but that's irrelevant to me. To each their own.

I agree with Chico on this. The BTS can be a nice enhancement but shouldn't be a deal breaker on the sale of the video. It's also a good thing to see performers as regular people as opposed to the fantasy of someone who's sexually available to anybody. A lot of these women are sweet and engaging and it's nice to be able to see that.

I rarely watch behind-the-scenes footage, whether it's related to porn or to a feature film. I know how films are made; seeing any movie being shot is about as exciting for me as watching the grass grow.

However, JimmyD wrote something above that expresses a point of view often echoed in these forums, one with which I take issue generally:

A capitalistic (free-enterprise) system merely sets the outside parameters for certain kinds of economic and social behavior. It does not, however, provide a system of ethics, a basis for personal goals and values, or standards of artistic quality.

Everyone wants to make money. In and of itself (in my opinion, anyway), there's nothing wrong with that.

Where the rubber meets the road, however, is the "in and of itself" part. In the world I live in, not all ways of making money are equally "good" (as I define and understand that term).

Someone who produces a careless, shoddy, boring sex video may (based upon, say, a great box cover and a good distribution channel) may make the same amount of money (or more) as another person who makes a blow-your-socks-off piece of porn. Is there anything "wrong" with that? Not exactly -- but it certainly isn't something to celebrate.

Undoubtedly some (most?) pornographers care only about the bucks, have no artistic ambition, uphold no standards of quality, show no concern for the health of welfare of the performers, and/or hold their customers in the most cynical kind of contempt. Is this "wrong" in a capitalist society? Well, it isn't against the law, but I wouldn't dream of calling it "good".

What we can do in a capitalist society is not the same thing as what we should do. Even the most rugged individualists among us recognize the supreme value of a little thing that I like to call "integrity".

Freedom allows people to make choices. However, all choices are not equally laudable. So let's not confuse the issues.

I confess: I watch Chico's movies expressly because of the BTS -- or the BTS-like footage sometimes sandwiched inbetween the scenes. Those 20-segment, bumper-to-bumper titles like "No Swallowing" are just really entertaining. If there happens to be strokable content, all the better. I've probably whacked off to that Jayna Oso interview in "Unnatural Sex 10" more times than most actual porn scenes. Of course, my interest in porn is 90% in the human pathology of it, not the porn itself -- though there is nothing like the dark magic of a particularly cute, hot, innocent or nasty girl with just that right look and attitude, in the right kind of scene. The BTS can give a whole other context to the scene, and make it hotter (for me anyway).

A lot, or most, BTS is silly and routine. If Steve Holmes is shooting spontaneous sex with the makeup girl, then it's better than any of the rest of the DVD. If Isabel Ice is shooting skim milk out of her nostrils before fellating Brian Surewood in a blowup wading pool glazed in semen, or Alicia Alighatti gets baloney eaten off her ass by Chico's dog before Joel Lawrence penetrates it, it makes me think what fun gals these must be outside the confining and cliche-ridden world of most gonzo porn.

a couple of comments on the comments:

chico-- i'm not saying its not fun to shoot BTS. and i'm not saying it can't be revealing. i'm saying that many porn companies routinely add BTS to their DVDs as bonus material and, because of that, many other porn companies are going to do the same as a means of being, in their minds, competitive. whether or not it actually effects sales, i have no idea and neither does anyone else in the jizz biz. but truth and reality aren't big commodities in the XXX biz while perceptions of truth and reality sometimes are. we aren't in an industry that relies much on market analysis. this is a distributor-driven business. it's all about what regional distributors want... at least in terms of the brick-and-mortar side of the business.

bob-- i'm also not saying that pornographers' desires to make money automatically means all of them will sacrifice quality for the sake of increasing sales. there are many in this business, like myself, who believe quality, i.e., production value, non-shoddy work, and attention to the content, drives increased sales. there are also many, again like myself, who conduct themselves in an appropriate, professional, and business-like manner when dealing with talent. while this may have no direct bearing on sales, i, for one, enjoy being able to sleep at night with a clear conscience.

What amuses me is how many people think that porn and/or BTS is any sort of reflection on reality anyhow.

It reminds me of that old saying about seeing hot dogs being made...

Wasn't gonzo created in part as a response to the artificiality of the features that were king in the late 90s?

The main appeal for me in the gonzo genre is capturing the most authentic fuck scenes in the world of porn. I understand that there will always be some degree of theatricality in the business, but the cold business demeanor that jamesb23 is describing is certainly not what I want to see at all. BTS holds no value for me.

It is reflective of what people want to see or are perceived as wanting to see. The fact that porn sells supports this. Which goes to skroker's stated facination of the pathology of it all.
