I've kind of been disappointed over the last couple of years that we haven't gotten a lot of big name returns. Usually every year leading up to 2012 we had at least one big name come back and make a huge splash. Honestly we haven't gotten a huge return in porn since around 2006 when all the JKP girls were free from their contracts. Look at all the big names that have not made a comeback
Shyla Stylez- no scenes since 2011
Jenna Haze- No scenes since 2011
Amy Ried- hasn't done any serious work since 2011
Gina Lynn- Hasn't shot for over 5 years
Tori Black
Lisa Ann
Sienna West
Lichelle Marie
Kylee Strutt
Keri Sable
Teagan Presley
Asa Akira- You would think she would have come back to gonzo by now, feels like she's gone
Gianna Michaels
Lots of huge names that have yet to return, some girls have come back but haven't had that same buzz or spark like they used to like Eva Angelina, Kristina Rose, Rachel Roxxx as a blonde just hasn't been as effective for her.

You're right that the comebacks aren't as big of a splash, but that's because porn isn't as big as it was. There just aren't as many scenes being made, and the scenes aren't being sold to as many people. So it's impossible to compare.
But as far as big names coming back, that will always happen. This year we had, among others,
Briana Banks
Holly Michaels
Natasha Nice
Kristina Rose
Brett Rossi
Hillary Scott
The year before we had
RYAN CONNER
CANDICE DARE
SUNNY LANE
KATIE MORGAN
The year before that we had
VICTORIA RAE BLACK
KAGNEY LINN CARTER
LILY LABEAU
SHAWNA LENEE
Those are just a few notables. I don't know how much more you could hope for. Just because you've picked out some specific girls that you wish to come back that didn't, doesn't mean we didn't have a lot of girls coming back.

I was thrilled to have Holly Michaels, Kristina Rose and Natasha Nice back I just wish they shot more scenes. Ditto Sunny Lane.
Alexis Texas is the one who has had the biggest comeback so far, shooting several showcase titles.
Still the rate of production is nowhere near what it use to be. In someways the industry use to overproduce but these days it definitely feels slower than I would like.
Most recently Kelly Stafford has returned to shooting. Huge news in my opinion.

Yeah Ryan Conner & Briana Banks were nice comeback but just doesn't feel like we've had the huge return that gave the industry some juice since around the Shyla & Jenna returns. The bottom line is that the money is just not what it used to be. I'm pretty sure a woman as sex hungry as Shyla would have been back by now if the money was still was she was making during her 2007 hey day.

The potential earnings from a big comeback are not what they used to be. Also, it is becoming easier for retired performers to build good careers (if they live in a reasonable part of the country and don't take a highly public career position). Also , it is much easier for women to settle down and build families instead of being social pariahs' like the past (again, depends on where you live of course). Lots of retired performers have build careers in real estate, nursing, business ventures, etc etc.
With those factors in play, less people are going to feel the desire to make a grand comeback.
However, I think Briana Banks coming back was fairly big news. At one point during her Vivid days, she was close to being the most popular porn performer in the world.
