What's the scoop? ===================== Monday - 10/18/2010 Author: Big D The recent discovery a cross-over porn performer infected with HIV has caused porn production companies to suspend filmingThe discovery and disclosure that a porn performer was believed to have contracted HIV has caused virtually every production company in Southern California to suspend production. The Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Health Care is the organization which tests erotic actors for HIV and other STDs on a scheduled basis. Most tests for the sex industry actors are done at the Foundation's offices in San Fernando Valley, Sherman Oaks and Granada Hills. Each month, about 1,200 actors are tested for HIV among other STDs. It was last week when AIM alerted the adult industry that a performer was found to have tested positive for HIV. Upon receiving the news, many adult production companies ceased filming any new content. Mega-Studios Vivid and Wicked were the first to halt production and both said they would not resume until further notice. Many other gonzo studios followed suit including Hustler Video, Digital Playground, Girlfriends Films and Kick Ass Pictures. Many other adult production houses halted production as well in order to determine which performers could possibly be affected. Although the exact performer's identity has not been released to the public, speculation as to whomever it is is running rampant throughout Porn Valley. Multiple industry sources are reporting that an unnamed male porn star who performed in both straight and gay videos is being called “patient zero”. This information revealed has caused the quarantine for several other performers who may have recently worked with him. Some adult performers have complained that AIM was too slow in alerting them if they were affected or cleared in the HIV case. Many claimed AIM's slow response was to help cover up sloppy record keeping and possible negligence. As a consumer of adult DVDs, you may be asking, “How long with this shooting moratorium last and will it affect the number of new releases coming out?”. After calling and speaking with a number of studio representatives, it appears that AIM and the adult industry have pinpointed the performer to have come up with a positive HIV test. Now comes the point in time to retest that individual and to test all the potential partners that may have come in contact with him. That should not take too much time and those that are unaffected can still perform with studios that have not suspended production. The afore mentioned studios that have suspended filming should resume shortly once all the testing results have been announced. The other question this situation is bound to ask is “How will this impact the push to make the jizz biz 'Condom only'”. Wicked is the only straight porn production studio to have a condom only policy. Other studios like Vivid are 'condom optional'. In reality that translates to no condoms hardly being used. Many performers would prefer to be condom only however many of them are fearful of placing that kind of restriction on themselves for fear they will no longer be offered jobs. Exacerbating the issue is that many of the adult DVD consumers prefer their porn without condoms. Many porn viewers watch adult films because of the fantasy aspect and do not want to be reminded of possible STDs and pregnancy. Taking into consideration porn companies will produce movies they know consumers will buy or rent, sometimes performer safety is relegated to an afterthought or is ignored. At the end of the day, we may never find out definitively who is the performer that tested positive due to privacy laws. With the multitude of performers out there, when production does resume it will be hard to pinpoint exactly who, in a talent pool of literally thousands of men and women, was the one that caused the shut down. Rest assured, this production suspension would have to last for months continuously for the end consumer to see any real impact and a lack of new releases. [Link] |
