Is there a need to distinct more generes within "hardcore" term?

I have started to watch porn in early 00's, before that I was just watching pictures or magazines. I remember that some 15 years ago, every BG scene without extended plot, romantic stuff and with genitals shown, it was labeled as a "hardcore". Things have slightly changed, a lot of stuff that would be probably considered as a bizarre, niche porn on the very beginning of 21st century, came to hardcore mainstream. I don't want to discuss the advantages of one studio over another, but it looks like right now the term "hardcore" can depict both plain, quite soft BG without anal as well as gangbangs with spanking and licking the floor, everything closer to BDSM but without those specialized toys and utilities.
If I were labelling scenes and movies, I would probably sort out:
- entry level: aesthetic scenes, without domination, spanking, if any anal then without ATM, movie style, somewhat romantic.
- hardcore mainstream: gonzo or some short fetish plot at the beginning, more graphic than entry level. Anal, DP part of DAP and groupsex fit there. Actions like choking, slapping, ATM, dirty talk all fit there.
- edge hardcore: harsher than mainstream, with much domination but no ropes stuff (there is still a BDSM category), containing severe gangbangs, nasty stuff with saliva, bizarre anal. Edge means they lead mainstream hardcore performers to the zone that was previously (in 20th century) beyond interest of most hardcore viewers.
Could be like these, without creating some new, strange names :)

Every time I see some funny maps about most popular porn genres in each country, I realize, that a list like: anal/milf/ebony/lesbian/hentai/bondage misses a point.
And most ADT users tend to use either a name of site or a director, than speak about the genre.
How do you guys think?

I can't say I agree with how you categorize label hardcore from 15 years ago. B/G content with genitals showing in itself doesn't constitute as hardcore, especially in the context of magazines.

As far as I'm aware, the fundamental distinction between hardcore and softcore porn has always been whether there is explicit vaginal, oral or anal penetration.

I think your labelling for modern porn has plenty of room for debate and overlapping. Personally, I don't consider slapping, choking, DAP for example to be mainstream in the realm of hardcore. I don't think A2M-free anal makes anal entry-level either. The fact that a performer can charge more for anal regardless of whether she does A2M or not is why I don't consider it entry-level, even today.

your "hardcore mainstream" is just gonzo and it doesn't even encompass all of it , but in reality the most of what is produced now aka Mainstream don't fit your sefinition for the most part and so is in Europe

I wasn't precise, those mags before were either Playboy or some European explicit stuff, quite typical. Just wanted to point out, that I became familiar with motion pictures over the internet, not earlier.

Does this distinction apply to solo scenes as well? I've noticed a lot of solo scenes the women use vibrators or their fingers/hands to rub their clit/labia, but never stick a finger or toy inside. For example at olderwomanfun.com, maybe less than 10% of the scenes a women actually plunges a dildo into her pussy. I always thought it was because those women dislike penetration or prefer non-penetrative masturbation because it feels better. But maybe it is a cheaper scene for the producer, as they have to pay more money for a hardcore scene?

It was rather about non-solos, but your observations are interesting. I didn't look specifically for solo scenes for a long time, rather having seen my favourite BG performers pleasuring theirselves alone if the preview was promising.
