Please.
I like games to be more silly over puzzling. I prefer things like "Monkey Island" or "Grim Fandango". over games like "Myst".
It does not matter how old or new it is as long as I can get it to run.
I have played:
The whole Monkey Island series.
Grim Fandango
Full Throttle
The Dig
Maniac Mansion
Day of the Tentacle
Shivers
and probably a few which I have forgotten about.
Anyway, I am looking more for humor and colorful characters then hard (meaning frustrating) puzzles.
EDIT TO MENTION (cause I just realized): This thread contains some video game spoilers. There aren't any warnings and if you read them you can not unread them. Beware.

Have you tried Syberia? It's an older game and it kinda sucks because your dude isn't a dude. It's a chick. But it's fairly challenging. You might not like it if you don't like to have to try and figure out what you're supposed to do but I thought it was very well designed. The story is cool and intricate and the environment is about as good as you'd expect for a game like that. It came out in 2002 so I have no idea where you'd get it now. It runs fine on XP and Vista.
Edited to add that it does have some moderately hard puzzles but I'm a dumbass when it comes to that sort of thing and I figured most of them out. You can always cheat and look it up on Google if you need to. I'm really encouraging you to try it if you haven't because I think it's the kind of thing you'd like based on what you've said about your tastes in the past.

Never played it, thanks.
I tend to find lots of the old games I am looking for looking through the used sections of some of the stores here.
In doing research there appears to be a Syberia 2.
Released in 2004
Both games get high reviews all around.

I can't recommend Syberia 2 because I've never played it. But the first one is just stunning! Incredible realism and detail for it's time. Amazon has it used for $5 and new for $20.

To recommend an adventure game for you. (It kind of genre bending as far as game play).
Check out either "Fahrenheit" or "Indigo Prophecy". They are both the same game but the name is different depending on where you live.
Like nothing else.

They still don't really do it justice, though. The sound is also very detailed.
Edit - I'll have to check those out.

They just released the Leisure Suit Larry Collection with all the old Leisure Suit Larry games. Several of them are point and click and are puzzly like the Monkey Island series, just not as hard to figure out.

^Talking about old school! Leisure Suit Larry was probably the first PC game I ever played. I think I had a 286 when I first played it.

I have LSL7 "Love For Sail" and have played through it once or twice. It's a fun game, highly recommended.
If you manage to find the retail packaging it comes with a scratch-and-sniff card that you are supposed to smell different parts of while certain in-game stuff happens.
The newest larry game, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is terrible garbage. Lots of annoying and repetitive mini games and hardly any clever humor.

@RP:
I got "Syberia" today, I traded my copy of "Carmageddon" and a SNES game "Breath Of fire" for it at one of the local hole-in-the-wall used game shops.
They are good because almost 100% of their business is in console games so people trade in PC games and they sit around.
You were right that the screenshots don't do it justice. The careful details in the movement of things are great. The main warning I got when I looked into it was not to use a walk through because the puzzles aren't that tough. And while good, the game is fairly short.
So far I am enjoying it. It took me ages to notice the door to the factory that is on the opposite side of the street from all the buildings at the beginning.
Thank you. I love it when threads put me on to something new.

You're quite welcome. I think you'll enjoy the rest of the game if you don't get too frustrated with it.
Whether or not the puzzles are hard depends on how good you are at solving puzzles, I guess. You're right about one thing. You have to watch for small details some of the puzzles depend on finding little keyholes or little objects laying around.

No prob. And wow! You must be good (Either that or you liked it so much you couldn't stop playing). It took me a while to get through it. I liked it as much as you did but I tended to get frustrated and give up on it for a few days. Let me know if Syberia 2 is as good as the first. It gets good ratings.

I can't put adventure games down. They gnaw at me.
My only issue witht he game was that is is so richly detailed sometimes I would totally miss things. Like at the very end it took me 20 minutes to figure out to move the bell to call the opera singer's porter. I just kept running around trying things till I found it. And the guys playing chess in the hotel are a dirty trick! They have nothing at all to do with the plot.
And the bartending machine messed me up too. I was totally confused about about the drink because you are supposed to use lime. I went looking for one before I realized lemon would substitute.
I have tracked down a copy of Syberia 2 and I am just
dying to play it. I have to go pick it up tomorrow.

Yeah. Some of Sybera's puzzles made me batty. There's lots of stuff in the game that has nothing to do with the plot, really. I don't remember a lot of specifics because it's been a while but I remember just about going crazy trying to get the right wood and everything on that machine in the factory near the beginning.

Making Oscars legs drove me nuts. I ended up being cheesy and making a save game in the control room so I could try all the colors fast. The game really doesn't give you any clue what color it should be. How was I supposed to know the correct leg color for a blue/grey robot was gold?

Syberia 2: SO far I am about 2 hours into it and I like it. The game play is the same as the first one with a few minor improvements.
Like when you talk to someone after picking a dialog option it disappears from your notebook so you don't spend time accidentally asking the same person the same questions.
It looks great. The graphics are stunning and they implemented an anti-aliasing option to get rid of the jaggies on the character models. The rendered backgrounds and tiny detailed animated parts (things like bits of snow falling off of rooftops) are gorgeous.
Obviously you know what the plot is, Kate has met up with old Hans and he wants to go searching for mammoths.
The voices are pretty good though some of the characters are a little silly.
I am still in the first town exploring around. I just love how surreal the whole game is.
Thanks again for putting me onto it.
A slight warning: if you normally use multiple displays disable all but your main one. The game fucks up and crashes because it allows you to click out of the screen.

RP: been working on Syberia 2 more today and there is one glaring difference. The quests/puzzles in the first one didn't make you back track all the time. Lots of running back and forth across town.
Bear in mind I am only in the first town. Though part of the difficulty of a puzzle should not be that it makes you feel bored by clicking through the same few screens over and over.
This isn't a huge issue but a bit of the immersion factor is lost because there are loading screens in this one. It is just a black screen with gears in the lower right but it still disrupts the idea that I am role playing Kate Walker and reminds me that I am just playing a computer game.
I am not going to stop playing it and I am definitely recommending it if you enjoyed the first one. And the complaints I have about this game apply to many games I love. Just attempting a small ongoing review for you without any spoilers.

Jayo: I don't know what kind of machine you use but Grim Fandango is still readily available all over and it runs great on xp (after you apply an official patch to the game).
I would loan you my copy except I don't think you live in Toronto.

I think we ran the original on a 386. Maybe it was a Pentium 2. I dunno. They all blur together anymore.
I may try to get GF again, but what I really wish is that they'd sequelized it. I remember it like a great novel (or movie): I was thrilled at the end because I'd gotten through it, then let down because I realize I was out of this wonderful world that I enjoyed being in.
Playing it again would be fun, but not quite the same.

This feeling comes up all too often in me when I think of adventure games I have known and loved. Some are impossible to revisit.
Grim Fandango was one of the great ones that was complicated enough that I forget most of the puzzles.
While you're at it I can very highly recommend the recently released Sam & Max games. Tons of fun.

The only way the price isn't worth it is if you use a walkthrough.

Yes, but I skipped that level. I had a 4.77mhz original IBM, a "clone" that ran faster (I don't remember the speed), then went to a 386, then a Pentium, a P3, and whatever I have now (a P4?).
I used to be much more into the hardware stuff. Now I just want whatever runs my software well.

RP: Okay, I gave up on Syberia 2 because the puzzles were not difficult, just annoying and time consuming. There is no fun challenge in running back and forth between locations and exhausting dialog trees.
I went shopping today and will start playing Bioshock tonight. I know it has nothing to do with adventure gaming.
I can not recommend Syberia 2 unless you are only into games for the plot. The gameplay is dull and repetitous.
I had very high hopes for the game which is why it let me down so hard. The best way I can say how the game is:
Ever play a game and wish you were playing Tetris instead? Endlessly running back and forth in a game makes me want to play some Tetris instead.

I know that feeling very well. It's why I became gunshy of sequels, and why I quit buying games at full price when they were new. I didn't like paying $40 or more on a game only to find out it sucked.

Jayo: Do you know about "Psychonauts"
Link.
It is the most satisfying game I have played in years. And I buy lots of games.
Consider it a sleeper hit.
The guy who was most responsible for Grim Fandango made it.
