Most studios have a 5 or so second intro showing the boring 2257 compliance message before leading us to the main menu.

RLD for some reason have made this last a whole minute for their films. You can NOT fast forward or jump straight to the menu either.
It's fucking boring having to sit there watching this crap every single time i put a film on.
If you sit and actually watch a clock for a full minute you will see how much this drags onnnnnnnnn.
Try it without doing anything else.

As for Video Team! I had 3 films where they had about 3 minutes of advertising their website before taking you to the menu. Again, no picture search or jumping ahead to the menu.
If you wanted to watch these films more than once you'd have to back the 'main feature' up on a dvd-r and cut out all the crap in the process.

There is software that can help you get past those annoying messages and ads during dvd playback on a pc, like Slysoft's AnyDVD. I don't know about stand-alone dvd players though.I guess they'll have to be hacked.

The "no fast forward" tool that DVD manufacturers have is evil and should be taken away from them. I despise whoever invented it.

If you want real irritation, wait until you have kids though. The later "Baby Einstein" DVDs have insane amounts of no fast forward stuff.

Who would think there would be something about DVDS that could make you nostalgic for VHS?

Bring back the good old days of VHS when you could just forward wind through any bollocks you didn't want to watch.

Or, what you geniuses can do is put the disc in the player, walk away for 5 minutes. The 5 minutes that you spend getting your lube, spanksock, snacks or whatever will be enough time to get to the main menu. Problem solved.

Yeah, I hate that stuff also like when you can't fast forward a part of the DVD. I hate the fact that we are being forced to watch something we don't want to watch or have seen already like 1000 times :-(

It's annoying, but it's even worse if you have to screen 25 movies on a day and they all do that. Makes me start screaming.

And if they have unskippable ads for phonesex or crap like that, I just eject the DVD and put them on the refuse pile. You can make the best pornmovie there is, but if you start with a bloody unskippable ad I will not watch (and hence not buy) it. I did manage to get one company to change it though, through my complaints.

People who try to screen 25 movies a day make me screaming.

Sorry, I don't know you and I don't want to attack you, but I heard from other people that they screen a lot of movies a day and write reviews. And most reviews look like that. You can tell that it was viewed in fast forward.

I love feedback to my movies. Of course I enjoy compliments but I respect critics and I learn from it. But many times I feel the reviewer never really watched the movie.

Dear Jacco,

how can you possibly screen 25 movies per day?

I watch all my DVDs using a DVD-rom drive in my PC and have never dealt with any of these unskippable ads.

I don't write reviews, Steve. I screen movies to decide which ones to buy for our webshop and mailorder catalogue. I can easily see in fastforward if a movie is crap. And since we select only a limited amount of movies (we don't even try to list everything) I can discard 9 out of 10 movies quickly. The ones left I will watch with less fastforwarding, then some more get discarded. What is left then goes to somebody else to get a second opinion and when the movies pass that too, they go to somebody who watches the whole movies without any fastforwarding and that person writes the reviews we put on our websites and in our catalogue.
There are only a few movies we will buy unseen (and most of those are from Evil Angel).
I am our first line of defense against the crap.

The other problem with screening are the classics, you just can't fastforward those to get an idea which ones are the best. Luckily I like watching classics.

Well, yeah, you are stuck waiting for a minute -- but on second viewing you can jump to where you left off and avoid it. It is inconsiderate for RLD to continue doing this. It shows a lack of concern for detail. But I don't really watch much of their product anymore so it doesn't effect me. Hustler is super-annoying with their intro commercials, but it seems now you can scan thru them ... I don't know why everybody doesn't do it like Evil and allow you to click directly to the menu.

These are called UPO's (User Prohibited Operations). You could always burn yourself a backup copy. Most DVD burning software gives you the option of disabling the UPO's.

Metro used to do this as well. There'd be around five minutes of advertisements locked to run. There was no way of skipping or fast forward. Video Team did it too. Not sure if they do it now.

I watch quite a lot of RLD product but I can't say that I've noticed the 1 minute copyright message.

I guess it's about not sweating the small stuff. It's a little like watching the kettle boil. It's always frustrating and so its better to occupy your time doing something else.

If you feel compelled to watch it however, then you could play a game with the copyright message such as reading it out load in a style of someone else's choosing, as they used to do with the closing credits on Whose Line is it Anyway.

For instance you could adopt a, like, oh my God, laugh at any question whether its funny or not porn chick interview style.

Just a suggestion.

I can usually bring up this menu where I can jump to diffirent titles on the disc, but it's not easy enough to use so I'll just put the DVD in and then switch to the TV-channel or keep surfing my laptop for a minute.

Haven't experienced the unskippable ads though, but I imagine it being horrible since I'm offended by how stupid they think I am... it's just so shady and unprofessional...

If I Rent/buy a DVD with too much unskippable advertising of any nature I simply don't rent/buy that studio anymore or at least for many months the only reason I can is that there's a scene I won't miss but it's very rare.

I'm the customer if they want to sell me something it MUST be the way I want it and I ABSOLUTELY DON'T WANT UNSKIPPABLE ADVERTISING especially in a DVD with a cost of $20
They have to decide do they want my money? or do they want advertiser's , note that often I do watch trailers or other advertising , but I do it when I please , I don't like to be forced to.

Vivid Used to be the absolute worst about this. They must have listened to the fans, because they have stopped the unskipable ads ad such. All studios need to stop this!!!

Ditto on the annoying-ness of this dumb try at forcing me to watch nonsense. It isn't that big of a deal but it everytime it happens I find myself wondering what idiot thought that up?!

What's equally frustrating is the fact that there is no consistency as to which DVDs will have this unstoppable message and which will not -- even within the same company.

I have had some RLD discs that will let me skip directly to the top menu, and others that do not.

The same with other companies. There seems to be no overall "policy" they adopt on whether the 2257 message can be skipped. I assume in this case they are just dealing with a variety of DVD authors that decide to do things in their way.

The only 2 companies I can think of that consistenly let me skip the opening FBI/2257 montage are Jules Jordan and Evil Angel.

I hate this as well.

IMO, after you put the disc in, it should go straight to the main menu. Wildlife XXX Prductions discs go straight into the first scene, and if you want to access the main menu, you have to press menu. That's the way it should be.

Another peeve as far as ads, is the Leisure Time discs, which have phone sex ads after every scene. And they are the oldest ads, probably from the mid '90s.

It isn't so much the advertisements, but it's the fact they're locked into running before you're able to view the feature. It's fine copying the movie onto another disc, but some people don't have the facility to do that, and have to go through this annoying run-through every time. Some DVDs don't have chapters either and I find myself having to scan through the whole DVD to find a bit 14 minutes from the end. On some there is no way of "going to" a specific point. That's my rant! Sorry!

Except that I've had some DVDs where if you don't make a selection from the main menu within a certain amount of time it stops the disc and you have to start all over again. There's also some which will start the movie on its own if you don't make a choice, which I also don't like.

As for the original subject, I never like having ads before the main menu or the feature. I can live with it or look past it if I can skip them (not if I can scan through them), and it's annoyed me to the point that I'm now taking a half point off the overall score of any DVD I review if it forces me to watch any kind of ad before the main menu or the feature because I find it very disrespectful to the viewer who paid money for that product. I can understand the need for the 2257 compliance screen, but that too can be done tastefully rather than forcing you to watch it for a minute or longer (which I have also seen).

Also, one can add Adam & Eve to the list of studios who do this as the last couple DVDs I watched from them had mandatory commercials for the Free Speech Coalition. The FSC is a great organization, but forcing me to watch commercials for them is one of the best possible ways to guarantee me not giving them money.

It doesn't bother me that much. I just plan for it a little - say, watch a minute of Conan O'Brien and masturbate while I wait.

The image of stroking it while watching Conan squicks me a bit.

I have to agree with Astroknight on the original subject.

Forced ads are a big pet peeve for me, no matter if it's mainstream or adult. This has been an old peeve going back long before I delved into writing reviews. 2257 notices, on the other hand, are a necessary evil and one that I'll accept and deal with if it means helping to keep the big-bad crusaders away.
