"Due to the overwhelming response to Dark Angels, we are going to push it out on DVD within the next MONTH.

Now, be forewarned, this version that is going out on DVD first is the MOVIE ONLY! This is for people who can't wait for the DELUXE DVD.

We realized that the DELUXE DIRECTOR'S EDITION is going to take a long time to do, especially with my schedule being overloaded as is. We would probably not be able to get the SPECIAL EDITION done for January, so we are going to put the movie only version out very soon, then put out the DELUXE DIRECTOR'S EDITION a few months after that.

FWIW, I'd rather wait for the deluxe edition, since it's probably going to cost about the same. I'm all for "do it once and do it right" rather than "buy it once, then buy it again."

If you remember back to movies like "Dawn of the Dead", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2", "Day of the Dead", etc, these movies were released to movie theaters "unrated" (no rated R) because the MPAA would not give these movies an R rating because of the gore. When the movie companies that made these movies released them, certain Cinema/Theater chains would not take the movie because they were "unrated". Movies that were edited down due to graphic violence and to get an "R" rating from the MPAA, such as "Robo Cop" and "Basic Instinct" were later release on laserdisc and DVD as regular versions, then UNRATED EDITIONS.

When we set out to make "Dark Angels", we were not thinking "We're making a good porno movie." We were thinking "Let's make a great scary movie, that just so happens to have a sex in it." We were making the movie in the same approach as making a Hollywood/Mainstream movie.

Now, there is an "un-written" rule that has been floating around the adult industry for years which is: "You are not supposed to make any adult movies with a.) Blood b.) Violence c.) Violence towards women d.) And absolutely no violence, or blood involved in a sex scene. We broke every single one of those rules.

How this "un-written" rule came about was that many distributors strictly follow the "indecency-act" of whatever area they are located in. This includes adult movies. In addition, these have been the rules of many Softcore Cable companies from the day adult movies started airing on the Playboy Channel, and other similar networks.

When we shoot an adult movie, were as basically shooting 2-3 version, one for video distribution, one for cable distribution, and one for somewhere in-between. Haven't you ever wondered why when you are watching an adult film/video in a hotel that you don't see any penetration or hardcore bits? It is not because they edited them out, it is because we shot 2 versions of the movie, which means we also edited 2 versions of the movie. In the case of "Dark Angels", we have edited 6 versions of the movie. Each one is designed for a different market.

I originally edited certain areas of "Dark Angels" that fell into a grey area of what is considered "acceptable" for all distributors of VHS XXX movies.

Now, the UNRATED version doesn't have anything ILLEGAL in it. What is meant by "unrated" is that the DVD market has absolutely no restrictions as to what can be included in a XXX movie. In this case it is more "horror-style" gore and special makeup EFX, and violence that were deemed too graphic for the XXX version. If the makeup effects and digital visual effects looked stupid or fake, then we would never of had this problem because people wouldn't have taken it very seriously. But because these effects look so real and are so graphic, then people take notice and start to get worried. We had to be careful.

Personally I find seeing a girls gaping asshole, and a gang-bang movie more offensive than anything I have in "Dark Angels", but I try to make everyone happy. Everyone at New Sensations/Digital Sin are very supportive of these decisions and it is the best choice.

Remember, it is only a movie.

Thanks for the straight scoop...I had a feeling that it was something along those lines. It's just confusing to the consumer when there are so many versions out there (and some unscrupulous retailers who pass cable versions off as the hardcore versions). Then there's the whole "European" versions for markets that don't have the same laws or self-censorship concerns.

I just wanted to point out that the term "unrated" is confusing even for someone like me who's seen quite a bit more porn than the average Joe. Without puting it in context, it's just like how X became XX and then XXX and then XXXX--sounds more like marketing hype than anything.

Personally, I share your puzzlement as to the standards that the adult industry imposes (and then breaks). Whether it's the PG-13 guidelines of CES or the move by some to push the envelope and portray just about every taboo act imaginable, it's a wonder how anyone can keep it straight.
