So what can we likely expect from this upcoming remake? - Minimal narrative and character development; for a film which is so centered on sexuality, the majority of the running time of Spinelli's film is devoted to developing the interesting characters rather than simply showing them screw each other endlessly. - Inferior performances from an inferior cast; after all Kimberly Kane, Briana Blair, Zoe Voss, etc. can hardly compare to either the acting or sexual abilities of actors like Leslie Bovee, Sharon Thorpe, Desiree West, Annette Haven, etc. - Overly long sex scenes that lack the psychological depth of those in Spinelli's original. - Lackluster cinematography and bland art direction; one of the things that made Spinelli's film so powerful was its outstanding camerawork and amazing set and art direction. Sure, I'm probably sounding very jaded and biased, but I'm just so sick of this - if not 'parodies' then remakes. Are the only original scripts in contemporary XXX being written by the people involved with THE ROMANCE SERIES? If so, that's sad. [Link] |

In the admittedly very little I've seen from Myers and his mainstream parodies he's seemed very respectful towards the source material. He also has shown that he isn't afraid to work with a bit of a budget, which although not necessary, can definitely help in some instances. One only needs to look at the onslaught of awful horror film remakes produced in the last ten years. Is anyone really going to defend the remakes of FRIDAY THE 13TH, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, PIRANHA, HALLOWEEN, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, etc., as anything more than attempts to capitalize on revered genre classics? For the record, I really like Paul Thomas' versions of THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES and 'THROAT,' because both films had very original premises and were only loosely inspired by their two Damiano sources. But I don't see Mr. Myers pledging to do something new with Spinelli's material. Based on the description in the article, all I've been led to expect is a dumbed down narrative and much longer sex scenes. Everything about this remake looks tacky and underproduced. In its defense, it's no worse looking than almost all other modern porn, but considering that this is a remake of what was arguably Spinelli's most sumptuously photographed and stunningly beautiful film, seeing it reproduced as a cheap video with virtually no visual style is just sad. And my predictions were pretty much dead on...I can't speak to the complexity of the plot or character development, but it doesn't look like much is going on in the story department, let alone the complex characterizations that made Spinelli' film so magnificent. And the acting? It's bad even by modern porn standards. The attempts to use bits of dialogue from Dean Rogers' excellent screenplay come off as laughable as they're delivered with all the eloquence of an elementary school play. But most offensive is the art direction and cinematography. Spinelli's film, which relies so heavily on its nearly abstract set design, rich color palate, and complex and at times noirish lighting style has been reduced here to something which is flat, uninspired and overall boring which, I believe, is the going to be the most accurate description of this remake as a whole. The threesome scene with Tara Lynn and Zoe Voss is quite stupid in its intro and the women don't really get it on at all, a shame as they're both good performers.
