They would take the best part or best angle and cut back to it and replay it again later on in the scene. I never really understood why they did that and sometimes they'd trick me into thinking it wasn't looped until I noticed later on. I guess you really don't see that done anymore. In the past I've been known to make a copy on a VHS of my favorite parts on loop to get off on. Otherwise it's hard with so many bad angles that aren't held long enough to enjoy. This reminds me of watching R rated porn movies from the local video store back in the early 90s. They'd repeat the same scenes over and over to fill in for the harcore shots that they couldn't show. Every time you sensed a shot of nasty hardcore penetration, a puckered asshole being impaled by a long, probing cock, or a pair of ruby red lips and winding tongue devouring a bulging cockhead, they'd cut back to the looped softcore scene immediately before it and you'd be left hanging there with your clit out wondering how you were going to ever going to get off. :P The advantage was that you ended up memorizing a lot of the horny dialogue the porn puppets grunted out with excited, spontaneous abandon in the moments just before their carnal escapades took an explicit turn for the worse. Yes, but if it is done well.. Eg there is a scene called Kara Davis with Janet Jacme and some blonde guy. And they show the same cum shot from several angles and repeat them and mix them up. it goes for quite a while. Its really hot.
Yes I remember when looping vids was common. It seems like I used to see it more on comp vids (which were cheap porn in the day) than in full length features. When I was younger, I stupidly assumed it was because porn performers were paid by the hour, like regular jobs. Since they are paid by the scene, I have no idea why looping was so popular.
^Unfortunately they were common in features too, all too often for my liking. These two well known late 70s movies for instance, 800 Fantasy Lane although minor they seemed very much out of sync with the movie, very irritating, and the horrendous loops in Chopstix which almost (for me) killed the movie, a practise I don't miss, at all.
Almost, but not quite, as annoying as the old habit of dubbing over porn. Usually in German. Why the heck was that ever a thing? It was never convincing, only annoying -- and it just made me mute it anyway. The other editing decision that's becoming thankfully rare is when the audio itself is obviously looped. "Rim My Gape" and other Sineplex films were particularly annoying at this. You'd hear the exact same moan repeated 5 or 6 times regardless of the obvious lack of synch, probably used to hide the fact that the director was barking instructions at the talent or something. Really gets on my nerves! And don't get me started on obnoxious porn music... I'm glad most of these things got left in the 90s.
AFAIK, in the early days, porn was shot on film and the filming/developing part of the process was very expensive. They shot the bare minimum and then used looping to fill it out. So you were partly right; the looping was because of cost reasons.
There were also clips we called "loops" in the late 60's and early 70's. You would go to an adult bookstore, sit down in a booth, plunk a quarter in a machine and the screen in front of you would start showing a (sometimes black and white) porn scene (no voice track, though). Seven to ten minutes later the loop would finish, you would go to the bookstore section, buy that Hustler or Playboy (or Rope Burn if you were kinky) you were shopping for and go on your merry way. Now if the proprietors of those stores would have kept those loops in good condition they would be worth a mint as many of them starred a young John Holmes or a young Linda Lovelace (not together as far as I know).

Sometimes I think I would rather see a particularly well shot five minute scene looped rather than the practice of some current camera operators who seem to turn the camera on and disappear for the next 45 minutes.
