Cloud storage is not a bad shout but you should look for one that is porn-friendly so you should rule out Google Drive.

You could also set up a NAS server with an old computer though it may be worth investing in a NAS drive or something is specifically designed to handle constant reading and writing.

If you're saying your budget goes to $675, I definitely recommend a NAS device. If you're especially adventurous and want to save money on electricity, you can build a Raspberry Pi and set that up as a file server with external hard drives too.

With regard to your question about cloud storage, how long is a piece of string (other than twice the middle to the end)? Charges are based on the amount of storage reserved for you in the cloud, individual companies own perception of the value of their service. If you see a cloud storage solution that appeals to you, it's definitely worth checking the service level agreement as there may be a clause allowing the provider the discretion to monitor the content you'd store on its servers and delete pornographic content or anything that otherwise violates the terms of service.

RAID is great to improve read/write performance and it's also great for protecting yourself against one or two drive failures but you pointed out RAID's fatal pitfall. The same way RAID can sync files being written to multiple drives, it can sync the deletion of files (accidental or malicious) from multiple drives in the array.
