Steph had an idea for a new page that automatically generates a list of movies that have been highly rated by reviewers.
Just looking for input on this new page. Is it helpful?

At a quick glance it looks like Brandon Iron might have more movies in this list than anyone else.

I like the idea, and the page.
Something to consider: Due to all the thumbnails, does it load slow for dial up users? You might want to provide some option to not load all the pictures.

I think its a great idea.
Just a thought, in that you might consider reducing the number of movies listed on each page, dedicating a bit more space to each specific title, thats deemed itself worthy of such attention.

Would it be possible for it to also generate a captioning link, perhaps just a bit of lead-in text,
to one of the positive reviews that justified it as a selection?

It would be possible but very difficult to automate. These lists are 100% automatically generated based on the rating in the reviews and the number of reviews.
To include a caption or lead-in text would be difficult to automate for a couple of reasons: 1) which review do we grab the text from? each of the movies on the list have been reviewed by at least three different reviewers and 2) I can't think of a way to automate the generation of the text snippet in a meaningful way. I think it would become a data entry burden and as such would never be updated.

I like it, but for instance Mike John's titles from Red Light are now sold in editions from Jules Jordan. It would be better if the copy displayed was a JJ version, so Mike actually gets the money for his product ... I don't know if RLD was legally compelled to pull all his stock out of the market or not.

The re-releases from JJV have be problematic for us. The reviews were of the RLD versions of the movies so we haven't switched. The content of the movie might not have changed but menus, encoding, extras and other stuff might have changed. (I don't know if anything has changed these are just examples.) If there are reviews of the JJV/Mike John releases then they would show up too. We list both versions in our database.

Yeah, since all the reviews can be accessed by simply clicking on the image, its not necessary.

Was just an idea to add emphasis on the reviews, and maybe showcase the selections.
Merely employing larger text, may likely accomplish a similiar effect, without all the technical headaches.

I wonder if any kind of sort by year is possible, say, the best reviewed releases of 2005 and so on?

I would second what Endless Loop said - larger images might make it easier to browse, see cast list, etc. without having to pull up the full page for each title.
Still a good idea! But depressing - I've only seen 21 of these...

I like this idea. I'll see how we can work it in.
I'll talk over some of the other suggestions with Steph. This page was all her idea.

I like the page and think the idea is great! I also would like to sort by year.
I was going to suggest the idea to sort by studios but i see we have that now so i don't need to say anymore on that.
Is there anyway possible to be able to sort by proformers?

I like it alot.
And it was good, as an occasional reviewer, to see a few movies I've given high marks in the mix.

I think it's a good idea, however are people really going to review films over and over again just to get them on that list?
Personally I never have time to write a review far far to busy on becoming a millionaire. However if I did wouldn't reveiw a film that had already been reveiwed - seems somewhat pointless.
Also you risk getting people writing pointless reviews "this was great" just to get their opinion in.
In general it's a good idea, but I think a better way to get films on the list would make it a real 100 must-own movies.
Maybe 1 vote per week per person, and no voting more than once for 1 movie.

I used to think my specific interests were shared by a wide swath of the mainstream, or at least in regards to the majority of those interested in the particular subject content I frequently watch. These forums however, have since altered that belief.
Given that understanding, even if its one sentence blurbs taken from each review, I've found the more varied opinion there is on a flick, the more defined the actual sort of content I'm looking for within that movie, ultimately becomes.
It would seem to me the idea of "100 must own movies" would indeed consist of movies determined by process of election, which would be interesting in itself.
My understanding was that this page was to bring attention to movies, that had quietly accumulated very impressive reviews, and thus merited another round of consideration, by those who perhaps either overlooked, or underestimated their content the first time around. I would surmise the idea of this page, is to help bring into view, that which has been the primarily goal of this site from its very inception, and thus serves a rather significant purpose on it's own behalf.

I don't think it's that important to anyone and if it is, they really need to re-evaluate their priorities in life.
I wish reviewers of mainstream movies adopted this attitude. Who needs VARYING opinions on a movie? ONE person's take should be more than enough and everyone should agree with that one guy's review. He who reviews first, reviews last, I say. /sarcasm

This refers more to the description of the action which is present is most reviews. Surely the discussion and opinions on various porn is best debated on a forum?
As the action is based on fact and not opinion provided it is a fairly accurate description you can probably make up your own mind as to whether you might like that kind of film.

But most reviews aren't "just the facts" or simple play-by-play. They contain opinions which differ from consumer to consumer. Saying there's no need for more than one of those isn't entirely accurate.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble but I hardly ever pay any attention to reviews other than to help me figure the content of a movie. Not the quality. I generally disagree with most reviewers of porn, mainstream movies, etc..... It takes so little for a lot of them to dis a movie for one reason or another.Reviews have their place but have little influence over my buying practices or attendance.

Yes, there are better ways to generate a top 100 but they require a lot of development. This was a quick way to produce a dynamic list. It will be interesting to watch it change over time.
As far as people writing reviews just to get a title on the list - the only people with that motivation are people related to the production/sale of the movie. I'm careful when approving or not approving reviews.
The more opinions on a single title the better.

That's why I didn't say it :P, but yes I see your point.
Certainly anything on that list is worth a look, the problem is more than some outstanding flicks are not, and never will be on there.
However, it is an improvement as a whole, over time maybe it can evolve, who knows.

Review them and they have a shot at being there. In the least you'll tell thousands of people that x movie is outstanding. Reviews get tons of traffic.

Very nice. I like the arranging titles by year as well. The only other thing I can think of would be breaking it down into something like 'features', 'all sex - gonzo', 'gay', and 'others' (thinking if there was any anime, instructional, etc. titles that would make it on the list).
