Okay, having made several reviews I decided to see how others were reviewing the same movies-just to see if my comments were in the same league. Well, I read them and aside from minor disagreements about how high to rate something, I think most of us are on the same wavelength.
I did, however, notice that a lot of people are giving really high ratings to somewhat marginal movies. By marginal, I mean the production quality leaves much to be desired, the performers look like they are wasted, or they have really poor production values/no extra's and receive a 4.5 or 5.
There are major exceptions of course. I read a Saki or Draken review and I know that it has meaning. I guess, and this is only a guess, that some of you feel obligated to only review movies you think are wonderful.
For balance, let's see some of you review a dvd or two you really disliked or thought, "Damn! I wasted my money on this POS?!? I need to warn my friends on Steph's site!" If we give every movie a 4+, the net result is that a 4 means average and there is less room to reward those studio's that take the time and effort to produce really exceptional dvd's.
We can always put in the body of the review that if you like a particular actress or fetish, it should get a higher rating.
How about it folks?

The ratings game is always a tough one to play, especially when you are supposed to give an overall rating to a video. I appreciate how Adult DVD Talk allows different ratings for special categories, and that is why the entire picture, including the content and context of the title has to be considered overall.
For example, I have a special affection for Andrew Blake's NIGHT TRIPS 2 which featured my favorite performer Lauren Hall, and gave it a "5" overall rating, which I think it deserves. No, it is not as long as the average gonzo movie, and no, there are no cum-swallowing scenes, and yes, it's considered the lesser sequel to NIGHT TRIPS. But I was critiquing the movie on its own merits, although I understand why differences in opinion can arise. Also, I did not really care for HBITS OF THE HEART, but Stacy Valentine looked so good in it, that I considered her overall popularity and the fact that there were no condoms used (which is rare in her videos of today)as big plusses in an otherwise mediocre video. Therefore, I gave it an above average rating.
Finally, some so-so videos of yesteryear can look pretty damn good when you consider the star, the type of action, and the overall importance of the movie (I raved about SISTER SNATCH because Leena gave a stunning performance despite the problems with the DVD)...and some can lose their appeal because they are no longer aas "ground-breaking" (DEVIL IN MISS JONES 3 and 4) using today's standards.
I guess the point is that it is all too easy to look at grades as a reflection of quality (although everyone in the world does it). I urge everyone to really consider the entirety of any review before purchasing...
Umm...I think I kind of lost track of the original question...but my main point of this diatribe is, " I really like watcjomg naked chicks on DVD."

I can't make it thru a movie I hate - thus have trouble reviewing them.
I think I should put a disclaimer on all my early reviews - my porn viewing at the time was very limited and I had very low expectations. I may just delete my early reviews - I'll set a day for spring cleaning soon.
I still have trouble with the ratings - what if one guy is really hot and one guy is a dog - I could average that out - but since a really hot guy is a rarity I think that deserves more weight in the male looks rating. I'm just not a numbers gal.

Does anyone pay much attention to the rating's description on the review page? This is a copy of it:

1.5 - Lacking
2 - Below Average
2.5 - Average

Steph, you have a point. How we average out a category can make a world of difference in how we rate a movie. For example, I have read reviews where a small, single appearance by a reviewers favorite actress makes an otherwise horrible movie wonderously jump to a 5. This is not the norm but still...
Drew, I am new to formally reviewing dvd's here so I pay very close attention to what I chose as a number rating. You'd worry for my sanity if you knew the internal struggles I go through to hand out a 3 instead of a 2.5.
I bet if we based our reviews on having to pay full MSRP (usually $40), many of the ratings would go down. That there are coupons and bargains helps a lot in this regard. I'd feel ripped off if I paid anything close to that for many of my movies.
Part of my whole point is that the ratings being handed out to some of this stuff goes beyond favored-performer-status influences. If a dvd has one nice ass in it, should an ass lover give it a 5? Curious...

I tried to come up with a rating scale that was statistically fair with the middle rating (average) being a 2.5. (I had a lot of help from Saki with the rating scale.) I know my brain tends to think that a 3 on a scale of 1 - 5 is average and if the DVD is above average then a 4 is acceptable. I think this logic is very common in a whole-point rating system but creates confusion when working within out .5 point system.
I know we've gotten feedback from people that are bummed when they get a 2.5 here. They find it hard to believe that a 2.5 out of 5 implies that the DVD is Average.

Drew, I expect to do a lot more reviews in the coming months. Given my nature for calling it exactly as I see it-good or bad-you may hear some more complaints/concerns.
If anyone has a question or gripe about why I wrote something, or would like me to reconsider a review; please direct them to me. I am a big believer in rationally discussing a difference of opinion. My reviews are not based on how well I would do in a given movie-that'd scare all of you-but often on how well I've seen someone do elsewhere. I will let them decide how we discuss it-email, chat, whatever they choose.
The most recent example of this is Thrust. I think Stacy Valentine is a hottie. She has the ability to melt icebergs under normal circumstances. In this one movie, she was a snore. It could have been for a lot of reasons-we aren't privy to any of them-and I reviewed it honestly. If, for example, it hurt her feelings (which I doubt it would), I'd be willing to explain more thoroughly why I wrote what I did. Heck, I'd even watch the movie with her and point out the problems (I'm a pal).
When you explain to them that we all know much of porn really sucks-a 3 starts to look good. It sure isn't a bell shaped curve out there either.

Drew, FYI, I try to pay attention to your scale and it makes sense to me. To me, it seems like the main problem is what one considers 'average'. I always took this as the average porno DVD. The only problem with that is average depends on what one has seen in the past, and as Evil has pointed out earlier in this thread, there's some real pieces of crap out there. There's also some really good stuff. A lot of it also depends on one's expectations. I guess that's why I started to put my initial expectations into the reviews (after I read one of Evil's reviews (I think it was Evil and said "Hey. That's a good idea!"). As always, one can't forget that reviews are subjective and there will be disagreements.

This is all very subjective and, considering everyone brings a wide variety of porn tastes to the table, I think the reviews have been pretty accurate. You always get an idea if a title is worthwhile.
But there's something else to think about. People read mainstream movie reviews for two reasons, and that audience is pretty evenly split into these two camps--those who read reviews as a public service before spending their money at the box office, and those who read reviews after they see a movie and want to find out if critics agree with their own assessments. In other words, they want either a consumer report or entertainment. The best critics (and I count Roger Ebert among them) do a good job of delivering on both counts. Most others have to earn a reputation for having good tastes before they can build that "consumer reports" audience.
What does all this have to do with porn? Well, not much. But it does have a little to do with porn reviewing don't you think? Until people learn who shares their interests and tastes they're going to want to be, at the very least, entertained. If I read a review that takes itself too seriously, I tune out. This is porn; it should be fun. Fun to watch, fun to read about. Maybe I've taken myself too seriously here. If so...sorry 'bout that.
And if you want to know my tastes before reading one of my critiques: I prefer real tits, I'm not bothered by condoms, feet do nothing for me, but asses do. I think Jenna Jameson looks damn near perfect, but then again so do about a dozen other girls who look nothing like her. Frankly, I can't explain it, but the world is a better place because it's true. Also, I'm of the opinion that just because a man's got hair on his ass doesn't mean I need to look at it when he's having sex. You can read these, and other insights, in future reviews. Thanks for putting up with me.

I think like with any reviews. You find the reviewer you like and you go with that person.
For me when I'm looking for reviews I see if its someone whose review I've seen before and I agree with.
For example astroknight, i use to read his reviews all the way through.
Now When I see a review of his I look at the scores and skim through. astro is someone i agree with on the most part so I'll take his word for it.

Everyone has very good points here...

Back when the ADVDT review system was overhauled, we had several lengthy discussions on how to reflect overall ratings. The individual rankings for each of the subcategories were expanded to give greater insight into what the reviewer was basing his/her overall rating on.

A purely mathematical rating system was considered (such as at Adult DVD Empire), where the subscores are simply averaged to come up with the overall. But that seemed unfair, especially since there didn't seem to be a way to fairly weight each of the subjective categories (i.e. should sex 'count' more than A/V quality?)

In the end, it seemed to be the consensus that the half point scale, combined with the expanded subcategories and the "What It's Worth" category would be a good compromise between making the rating system complicated and making it easy to understand.

As far as grade inflation, you only need to go to IMDb to see this in action. They have a 1-10 scale, with most of the ratings being higher than 5. That would seem to indicate that "average" doesn't exist. If you further drill down into an individual movie's rating, you'll see that there are some 1's and some 10's. Does a '1' mean that the person really hated this particular movie, or that it ranks as one of the worst movies of all time? Even if there was a definitive standard, I guarantee that some fall into the "poor" standard and some who fall into the "poorest" standard.

For the record, I tend to rate adult DVDs against what I perceive the "average" video within that genre is. In other words, if I were to rate a gonzo video, I will assign a 2.5 (average) to the sex component if I think the sex is about what one would expect from the gonzo genre. Notice that I'm not comparing it to couples porn, nor to classic porn. If that were the case, most porn would be toward the lower end of the "all time ratings (porn 1973-present)".

And as far as the composite or overall score, it's based on a very subjective overall feeling about the quality and value of the DVD as a whole. That means that the DVD extras (or lack thereof), the A/V quality, the sexual heat, and so forth factor in. And the "What It's Worth" field is important too and goes hand-in-hand with the overall score.

For example, I just looked at a review I did of The Dinner Party , which I rated a 3.0 out of 5. The sex was a 4.5, but the extras and A/V quality were both 1s. As I said in my review, I thought the sex could stand on its own, but it was painful to watch. I gave it a 3 (above average) at a street price of $10. To me that means that it would be a better than average purchase if you could get it for 10 bucks or less.

Clearly, it can be confusing to say the least, especially when everyone has their own idea of what the ratings mean. I guess the only thing I can say to that is to echo what Evil_Rip said and stick with reviewers you like (that's what people do in the "real world"). Also, it would help if reviewers make a point to explain why they liked or disliked something so that people have enough information to judge for themselves.

Those are good points Saki and pretty much what I've decided on for myself. I spend more time telling what I liked or perceived as being good than I do describing the actual sex acts. This type of review requires a bit of trust in the reviewer.

I've also offered to further explain or discuss why something was rated a particular way if anyone wants to discuss it via email, chat, or whatever other means of communication they want. So far, only a few people have taken me up on that offer but the conversations were usually good (if somewhat spirited at times) and offered me enough insight that I would, if able, increase a rating just a touch if we had that ability.
