The way to get around it is to order in as small units as possible - its better to pay the shipping for 5 seperate DVDs from abroad than try and save money by ordering 5 at once and getting hit by customs!

DVDs shipped in the usual brown envelope are opened by the custom in the UK and with this recent order, I was charged USD 50 for the DVds that I have ordered. Its a huge amount of the money considering I could have got three more DVDs with that amount of money!!

Also, I believe the allowance is only a measly £18, not £30. As you say, if you order in small quantities , from 'customs friendly' suppliers, you will minimise the risk.
