I hope performers and producers are aware that this practice can cause sudden death by inhibition of the vagus nerve. They would be on a murder rap and I don't think a 'model release' would get them out of it!

How, exactly? I know the vagus nerve is important, but I'm not certain what it does. By inhibition, do you mean pressure is applied to it?

Renee: I'm not a doctor, but I've read about this a few times (and Googled on 'vagus' and 'sudden death'). The vagus nerve runs down the side of the neck near the carotid artery. It is part of the autonomic nervous system and helps regulate the heartbeat. Pressure on the vagus nerve, as in choking or strangulation, can cause the nerve to inhibit the heartbeat, even stopping it entirely. It is a kind of heart attack. If not revived, the victim may die. It is a rare event, but it explains why people who choke on food, etc, or who are held in a police choke-hold, sometimes collapse and die far more quickly than they ought to!

I have not found any reference to people dying from face-fucking, but this is a rare practice anyway. It is common sense that stuffing a large object down someone's throat is a dangerous practice. Even without vagal inhibition, cutting off the blood supply to the head through the carotid arteries is also highly dangerous. Judo strangleholds can cause unconsciousness in about 10 seconds, which is why judo referees have to watch very carefully for signs that someone is 'going out'.
