IN fact, it limited the magazine's sales at the newsstand. Playboy sells over 3 million copies a month. Penthouse was below 600,000 when Guccione bowed out. But my enjoyment of the magazine began long before hardcore became an option in the '90s, and for me its appeal was sexy ladies and hipster prose (guys like Robert Palmer Jr. and Nick Tosches used to write in the "brown paper" culture section) and those letters, which I whacked off to as much as the pictures. Later, I find out they were all fake, written by some now-famous scribes. But that was the beginning of my affair with pornography: at least, it was "literary" porn ... of a sort. Monopede mania! LOL. I think what Penthouse is doing by employing porn stars for tame photo sets is using the porn image without manufacturing porn itself. Which is what Maxim does to great effect. For me, I can get all the explicit extremism online or DVD ... there's something pretty cool about old-fashioned eroticism on camera. I don't know if it's mad strokable. But it's fun to look at. I collect a lot of Taschen-style photo books, some hardcore some not, and it's one of my favorite kinds of image-driven amusement. And if they use guys like Terry Richardson, the shots are gonna be way edgier than Playboy, which is hugely lame, and more artful than Hustler, which can be pretty hot if its a Suze Randall-type deal, but doesn't look different enough from actual porn usually to commmand my $7.95 (if I want that I'll grab a Buttman magazine ... which is the best skin mag going ... ) [Link] |

Still, as a career move, this is good for Sasha. Expanded name recognition (beyond the hardcore, internet porn crowd) is always good for a performer's upward mobility. In Sasha's case the Penthouse gig puts Sasha back on-track. She worked very hard in many, many videos in 2006, and was my second choice (behind Naomi) as Best New Starlet. Yet she lost out on most awards, and with newbies like Bree Olson, Paulina James, and Casey Parker coming up fast, there's been less buzz about her lately. Being a Penthouse Pet now has people talking about her again. Sasha appears to be a smart, clear-headed girl, who is committed to a career in porn. And not what everybody in the LA porn scene says. 2. Casey Parker seems to have a good career plan in place and landed a contract early. So she doesn't have to worry about rent money. And the need for rent money usually leads porn girls to working for the multitude of no-talent directors in the biz, who use up performers/spit-them-out in six months time, and are destroying the industry. 3. Paulina James has the looks and sexiness to last in the biz. She's just signed with a company, which should mean that she will have people promoting her.
