Ok, I was going to post this in the "Sasha Grey hot and fresh" thread but thought this topic deserves it's own thread. I'm going to discuss Sasha Grey's crossover onto HBO's Entourage but actually it pertains to any pornstar who crosses over, i.e. Jenna Jameson, Stormy Daniels, etc.
At first, as a Sasha Grey fan, I became slightly annoyed that it's apparent, by the lack of comments one way or another from her, that Sasha isn't doing porn anymore, based off her crossover onto Entourage and future prospects. But I wasn't annoyed that she wasn't doing porn anymore. Rather, that she has always held a porn/sex positive viewpoint on the industry and to just go "radio silent" on her porn career seems weird to me. I mean this is a starlet who started her own company, was rumored to at one point want to start a talent agency, and has always maintained that women who enter porn shouldn't enter it in order to try and crossover into mainstream. From what I gather, she doesn't post here anymore; I believe this to be due to her schedule and not someone offending her off of this board, but I don't know.
I guess my point is, that I found her opinions refreshing to the point of comendable. Here was a starlet in it for all the right reasons and proud of her decisions and embracing womens' sexuality with a fervor. Now to me, it's just sad that she isn't shooting anymore, nor posting anymore, nor involved in the industry really, except when the topic comes tied to a mainstream promotion, as in her PETA ads.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not like some posters here who think a porn star should work their entire careers and adult lives in the industry. While I think that's awesome and a positive for the industry if stars stay involved in the industry in some fashion (Nina Hartly is a goddess to me for this aspect alone), I do understand that people have other interests; Sasha has always been one that had other interests. So I don't begrudge her to branch out and take/seek opportunities that interest her. And I seriously doubt that she will turn her back on the industry the way Jenna Jameson apparently has done (Jenna, if you were to ever apologize to the industry and turn positive on it again, I'd like to think the collective would forgive you, lol).
My point here is that I am not annoyed anymore that Sasha Grey has apparently stopped performing and I, like many fans here, wish her the absolute best in everything she does. If she stays industry-positive, she could and should have a HUGE effect on porn's reputation/understanding by the mainstream. But like another poster said in the hot/fresh thread, wouldn't it be walking the walk, to actually still perform in some porn (even if it was created by her company) even while maintaining whatever crossover roles she can? Wouldn't that be a bolder step in showing mainstream that porn should be more or less accepted? Maybe that's a gameplan she has secretly, for all I know.
Now I can understand with all that she's got on her plate, that she is probably extremely busy. But to not come on here and post to just stay in touch with the fans who helped build your career in the first place seems offputting to me (assuming again, that there wasn't some blow up on this board with her). I guess it just bumbs me out that she is in such a great position to endorse the industry, that I hope she doesn't leave it totally behind and it would be nice if the posted on here in whatever spare time she could carve out for it, even if only sporadically. And this goes for any pornstar who crosses over as well...
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sasha has a grat body and a pretty face. But in many scenes I saw her I just thought "Less talkie, more boobie", or in other words, sometimes this whole dirty talking was annoying to me.
And this pseudo-intellectual bla bla of hers was just boring to me.
She wanted to become famous. Well that she is. Most pretty girls use the casting couch to make a career, she did porn. Hope she will make it big in Hollywood or whatever else maisntream career. But I doubt it.
She's quite smart and always hogs the spotlight, that's for sure. That's all you need these days to make a career (not as a star, but to be a B- or C- celebrity).
But what do I now?

I'm not privy to Sasha's thinking, but it appears that she's moved on to other social networks.
"Crossing over to mainstream" is really starting a new career. It doesn't surprise me that she has little time for her old haunts. Maybe she'll come back to porn when she's better established in her new role, but I wouldn't bet on it. While the notoriety made a good springboard, I suspect that porn offers little scope for her ambitions.

If she can make a living doing other things, why not do that? I can't see anyone wanting to commit to a life as a performer, the rewards are not long term, many performers seem to end up broke at the end of the day.

she may do better in mainstream but the porn stigma might not get her far.
how many 'suicide-girl' style photo shoots can she do? how many anal sex main topic talk shows can she do?
i love her almond eyes, etc etc in the non-porn stuff ive seen her in...but seriously...hollyweird is chock full of girls like that. is it really unique to quote kafka? no..cause i know 50 girls in nyc that have those books on their shelves. she has a name because she takes dat cock like a champ!
she really needs to make an effort to stretch her mind & become unique for once. yes, she may be unique for porn actresses but she is a dime a dozen in mainstream.

Yeah, I kinda assumed that's what led her into porn to begin with.

I believe that it will take someone that can and will cross back and forth between porn, and mainstream work before the general public will accept the fact that the adult industry is legitimate.
You see it in bit parts, and independent films, but until there is someone who is easily identified, and in demand in both industries, we will continue to see only small successes in the ability to crossover.
I also feel that to break the crossover barrier, it will probably take someone coming from the opposite direction, a true mainstream name making a foray into the adult industry. I am not talking about the celebrity style excursions either, although this has helped in some ways.
Let me put it another way.
How many people would buy an adult feature film with a Kate Beckinsale, Megan Fox, or other recognized mainstream actress?
I believe something like this would make the producing studio a killing, even if the star performed poorly sexually by current adult standards.
Just one fool's opinion, and I am probably wrong.
It's all fun and games until someone gets an ear poked out!

what planet are you living on? no serious director, art director, magazine editor in mainstream work will do that. the gate isnt open for that. it isnt like she has the choice to do it, the choice isnt there at all.
the general public isnt part of the equation either.
& the porn industry IS legitimate regardless of whoever's opinion...$13 billion a year testifies to that.

As for my current planet of residence, it is someplace that you would find very difficult to survive on.
The point I was trying to make is that is what it will take for true crossover success, whether or not the gate is open for that does not matter, the demand on either side of the imaginary line has to be there, and the person who is finally able to cross that line freely will define, and make the path for others.
Sasha Grey is not that person in my opinion. I applaud her for her success, but I do not believe that it will go much beyond what it has already.
There was a time when I foolishly believed that maybe Stephanie Morgan could be that person.
I do not know who that person will be, or if it will ever truly happen.
I feel that Soderberg is a pretty serious director, although his works are not immensely popular, he has enough backing to get his movies made, and his movies generate enough revenues to help him make more.
I have never questioned the legitimacy of the porn industry, what needs to change is the perception of it being a shadow industry, one that makes a great deal of money, but one that most people will not openly discuss.
Yes, the general public is part of the equation, and so is their opinion with regards to porn, that is why you no longer see the "Huge Adult Section in the Back" signs in your local video stores. The general public's perception of the adult industry being a freak show, and one that needs to be hidden has to change.
It's all fun and games until someone gets an ear poked out!

It's not like porn is a thriving industry that can compete with "HBO money." If you had a choice of being in a mainstream film directed by an Oscar winner or doing the mope squad (again), wnat would YOU choose? I mean, not like the mope squad gets that many gigs either these days.

That number has probably has no basis in reality, as Forbes magazine established years ago. And at the time Forbes it talking about the industry was booming, certainly with the recent massive downturn in the industry it is making even less than it used to.
Consider that a Salon.com article on Stagliano said that Evil Angel (easily in the top 3 of gonzo companies) made $7 million a year, and Mr. Stagliano took home about $1 million a year, nothing to sniff at but not the billions of dollars the industry was supposedly making.

I find Entourage hit or miss at best so the question I have to ask about her appearance there is: Is she playing herself or another character where she actually acts? I ask that when I recall Jesse Jane's appearance with a few other girls a few years back; basically they had 1 minute of screen time and played themselves. While I wish her nothing but success in the mainstream world, my opinion is that she will be little more than the flavor of the month at best. Yeah, her fame relating to porn might get her in the door, but given that the acting profession in general has a 95% unemployment rate, I'm sure that overall her or any other porn girl's credit will be little more than, "Third girl in shower" "Stripper on couch" or any other role that requires nudity. I read a quote from a director who hired porn girls to appear in mainstream films and his reason was something to the effect of; "they have no problem getting naked on cue, and they do it quickly and quietly without a lot of drama!"

I do believe it was the industry in general. One EA release costs $25000 to produce distribute for examples purposes only. Sales of 5000 rental units @ $20, then take 5000 Rental units x an Estimated 100 nights of rental x $5 a night. By that example, one release can generate almost $2.6 Mil total. Example used for conversation purposes only.

I saw "The Girlfriend Experience", I saw her on "Entourage" and bottom line is: she can't act. I'm not trying to be mean. I wish her luck but I think once the "curiosity factor" in Hollywood with her is over she's going to have a hard time being a working actress.
Again, not trying to be mean, but I think we'll all be reading about her big "return to porn" flick in about a year or so.

Read the Forbes link if you're interested, they prove that the numbers are bunk for the claims for the 'industry in general,' including rentals, strip clubs, cable, etc.

They're doing the same blurring the lines between fiction and realty, everyone playing a thinly veiled version of themselves or some other real person, thing that the show is known for; she's Sasha Grey, playing a character named Sasha Grey and identified as a porn star and as having been in "The Girlfriend Experience," but she is made to look single and ready to mingle instead of married, and she's Vince's girlfriend of the moment.
Disagree completely. I find her porn work a bit forced and over the top for my tastes, but in the movie and the show, she seems very natural and comfortable, interacts effortlessly with the other people in the scenes, and the camera loves her. She may not be someone who (at least presently) is cut out for the stage, but that doesn't mean that she "can't act."

As far as I know Sasha is only the third porn star to have made an actual transition from porn to mainstream media. Tracy Lords and Ashlyn Gere are the other 2. Ashlyn was in her 30's at the time and only did TV but she did return to do more porn after her stint on TV. I don't know if it's because she simply couldn't get anymore work in mainstream or her choice to do porn again. Tracy has done both TV and movies and still does to this day. I know there are many more performers that have appeared on TV and in movies but I can't think of one that had an actual speaking part and got more work from it.
All that to say that Sasha is not the first and until she does a lot more mainstream work then she may never rise above Tracy. This is not to take away from what she has accomplished up to now but her 2 acting gigs have been as a escort in The Girlfriend experiment and playing herself in Entourage. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that no matter what happens with her mainstream career. Porn is no longer an option for Sasha.

Some good points being brought up here, but let me rephrase my meaning a bit to my post and also respond to some posts:
Kataboom wrote:

-That's not entirely true and more to the point, the past is meaningless for the most part. The only thing that matters is how mainstream America acts presently or in the future. Change begins with small steps. I agree with Harri Patel in that Sasha's mainstream work is more understated and her porn performances were often over the top. Not that I didn't like her porn performances because I definitely was a fan and thought she was always into the sex and never faking it really, but sometimes it did seem that she was over-doing it for some performances.
Pat362 wrote:

-I would argue that Jenna Jameson was definitely a mainstream figure, so I'm going to disagree with this. She maybe never did LOTS of movies or tv shows but she definitely was a media figure, even still. Maybe like Paris Hilton in that sense, but still a big transition nonetheless.
-I think people are looking at this as too black and white of an issue; there's shades of grey in there. It's not simply does a pornstar do either mainstream or porn. The hope is generally that they would do both. Hopefully we'll get to a day where it doesn't represent such a stigma. I agree generally that the roles the crossover stars have had have generally been typecast efforts, but that's why I'm hoping Sasha's Entourage gig eventually leads to other roles not so cookie-cutter. If not roles, then a media presence at least. The point is to gradually get it more accepted bit by bit.
And if she does, my original post was sharing that the hope is that she doesn't leave porn behind forever, even if it means being involved in non-performing ways; there are many other ways a starlet could still be a positive influence for the industry. My hope is that she continues to "actively" indulge in the porn industry in some facet while doing more mainstream work. Maybe now she's just hedging her bets while the mainstream gigs fall where they may. Maybe she doesn't want to risk ruining that or risk ruining future porn, and so hence her seemingly "silence" within the industry in general.
I don't have any other explanation for her relative quietness other than the above theory. But I definitely hope she still endorses the industry, since one of her stated goals was to bring more acceptance to womens' sexuality within the pornography dynamic. In my eyes, to do otherwise, makes it seem that her sentiments and ideals were phony all along, and to me that might be worse than turning her back on the industry.

I think you're reading more into the fact that she doesn't seem interested in posting at ADT anymore than may be warranted. She posted here when she was new, and Spiegler was representing her, and presumably encouraging her to post. The forums were frankly quite a bit more interesting and less dominated by dumb and repetitive topics back then, too. Using Twitter is probably easier and quicker, and may allow her to bypass at least some of the sniping from the threatened-because-I-can't-convince-myself-that-she's-dumber-than-I-am-so-I'll-call-her-a-"pseudo-intellectual" crowd.

Lol, that's pretty funny but now that you point out that forum aspect to me, it makes a lot of sense-especially with twitter now. Although I'd think it'd be cool to see her posting here again, my main point is even if she never posts here again, I hope she still speaks and endorses the porn industry in her life, if not continue to dabble in it in some fashion.

Generally speaking, once porn stars discovered Twitter, they didn't need ADT for much anymore. Not referencing sasha in this, particularly .... but the shitstorm of negativity that greets almost any female performer who develops a presence here over the years would understandably disuade them from participating once another medium arose for them to interact with fans. Especially one that they can control. Just the IR cretins alone ...

I don't agree that Sasha has to concurrently perform in porn and in mainstream media to "walk the walk." Even if Sasha never performs in porn again, I can't imagine her ever speaking ill of the industry. She seems like someone who will always be a major proponent of porn, at the very least for the self-expression aspect of it.
It's her choice, life, career, body, etc., and if she no longer has the need or desire to do porn, more power to her. I don't know that her not doing porn is even inextricably linked to her fledging mainstream career. She's essentially done everything that can be done, so maybe she just doesn't feel the need to continue having sex on film. Quite a few porn actresses use porn to explore their sexuality and limits; Sasha did that and more well before the age of 20 (hell, maybe before the age of 19)! That was one of her goals entering the business, and she accomplished it, so...
And I personally doubt that she will ever make a comeback, though she has the savvy to stage an amazing one.
Oh, yeah, one more thing: Nina Hartley IS a goddess, for sure!

In general, a lot of people have been harsh about Sasha Grey's performance. I personally believe that porn stars bear a stigma of stupidity as if being in porn precludes the possibility of being talented in areas outside sucking/fucking. I saw Girlfriend Experience and thought she did a decent acting job. Her role didn't require an in-depth performance but I've seen plenty of B movies where the acting is just awful and she never sinks to that level of mediocrity. In fact, she seemed pretty natural and spontaneous in front of the camera. Besides, give her a goddamn break. It was her debut performance for christsakes.

I think it's understandable she's not performing any more with the amount of things she's doing but one thing you know about these crossover stars..no matter how many mainstream things they do they will forever be known as "that pornstar".
From what I've read Sasha has never and does not regret her porn career but if she's hoping to now shake it off and be mainstream-only I don't think she'll ever shake the pornstar image whether it's on tv, in movies or her music. She'll always be "Porn Star Sasha Grey" or "Former Porn Star Sasha Grey"

Did SNL ever do a skit about people who completely miss the point of SNL skits, and try to crowbar references to them into conversations which actually involve the opposite of what the skit was about?

--Yes, you are correct on her age but she always seemed/acted ahead of her age, so I don't know if age is an accurate prerequisite to consider. That being said, you are 100% right-everyone has a right to change thier opinions/directions. All I'm saying is the industry NEEDS talent who have/share her general sentiments on the industry. It's such a positive and generally helps eradicate previous notions about the industry, notions that change day by day. That's why I'd consider it a big loss if she ever turned her back on it. Like many posters have said here, there is a very real liklihood that she won't, and that she'll always embrace it when questioned about it. I'm just saying I hope so...

So basically, you're saying she's appearing as herself. Thanks. As far as the recent movie announcement, yeah she's in a movie and working, but at the end of the day Jeremy Piven is the lead. That would rank up there with being in a movie starring Matt LaBlanc or Jason Alexander. But, when the movie wraps, she can say to me, "Well Douchebag, how many Jeremy Piven movies have you been in?" I'd have to say "none" and then she can say, "Well, I've starred in one more than you have! So shut your pie hole!"

Shake it off? That hardly seems to be her strategy. She seems to be embracing her porn career. I've watched two of here episodes on Entourage and her performance seems so natural. Of course she is playing herself, but I think that she can take this "main stream" route much farther then Traci Lords.
Her intelligence and humor are something to watch. And this comes from someone who never found her to be all that sexually attractive.

I don't know that she is trying to shake it off, everything i've read she has embraced and not regretted it. All I mean is even if she did 20 years only mainstream work she would still be "the pornstar" in 20 years time and that might mean she doesn't get the correct recognition.
I think she'll always be "the pornstar" and that might eventually start to grate on her when she is trying to be taken seriously.
For instance 'The Rock' will always be the wrestler who is acting, Schwarzenegger will always be the actor who is being a politician and Sasha Grey will likely always be the pornstar who's dabbling in acting/music. When it comes to being taken seriously those always seems to put a dent in things.

Schwarzenegger used to be the body builder who became an actor, but hardly anyone remembers that today. I never new of "The Rock" until I saw him in a movie, so I can't speak about him.
ADT'ers may know about Traci Lords' history, but my wife, and I suspect most others, who have not followed porn, wouldn't know who she was even if she walked down a "red carpet" naked.
I think that if Sasha becomes successful in following her new career path, porn will become a distant memory. We shouldn't forget that "mainstream" movies will probably embrace more and more graphic sexuality as time goes on. I'm not sure our children or our children's children won't wonder what the fuss was all about.

Has anyone else mentioned that she's in this Virgin Mobile advert?
After Tyra and the early hype I remember a fair few sneering comments about her being gone and forgotten in six months time. Whatever Sasha does in the future, she's proven the naysayers wrong, and probably achieved more of her goals than most of us had at 22.
I'm not sure if she'll really change anything, or if she'll ever have much to do with porn again, but I wish her well in everything she does.
Anyone heard her new album yet?

-----Clam Digger, your points are spot-on, except I hold out hope porn isn't a distant memory for her. Maybe it will or won't we'll see, but I hope not. But already, as my point is above, she's helped to forge the viewpoint of your last point-that is, someday, you are right, that society may indeed say what was all the fuss about. I hope it does arrive.

I think Sasha has shown a lot of natural charisma on Entourage. I've been very impressed with her and how they've written her as a character.
While Sasha has clearly done anything but run away from her past as a porn star, I am one of the people who believe she may have shot her last scene (what was her last shoot anyway?). Unless she needs money I see her leaving this part of her life behind, because in creating her "fuck junkie" persona, she seemed to always regard porn as some kind of experiment into her own sexuality and how far she could take herself. There doesn't seem to be much Sasha hasn't done on film already.
We may want more scenes from her, but what challenges are there for her left in adult movies? What hasn't she already done? What mountains are left for her to climb?
I think she's already accomplished everything she wanted to do when she started making movies and now that more mainstream opportunities have arrived it's good timing for her to enter into another phase of her life.
I know I am very curious to see what's next for her and I wish her all the luck in the world.

Haven't caught her yet on Entourage but will shortly. Behind in my viewing a bit. You make some good points here. No one knows what her OVERALL plans were when entering the industry, of course, and she may have met all of those goals she had. I don't agree with the thinking of "what's left to do" and "there are no more mountains to climb" though. I think we, as fans, need to get out of the thinking of she's done "that" or she just did "that" and knocked it off of her porn to do list. I think there is so much variety of what could be done artistically and erotically, that it's totally up to the imagination.
Especially for someone like Sasha, who sometimes said that much of the content sucked and that it was her goal to spice/spruce it up. Which is what I thought her own studio was going to go after, before the mainstream calling cards came in.
That being said, I will always follow her career and hope it leads to exciting things. My OP did say it would be cool if she still dabbled in scenes and whatnot, but I also said that it would be supremely cool for her to just stay industry-positive and continue to endorse it when asked about it. To me, that would still be a positive message she can send out, which could encourage other erotic/artistic people to enter the industry and express themselves. And/or to maybe pop in here and catch up with some of her fans, even if just to talk about her mainstream endevours. I think her fans here would still love that. I wasn't posting here then, so I don't have the fan connections to her that many here might, but I think it would still be cool. But overall, her positive viewpoint on the industry remains my underlying hope.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head. Soon Twitter may make ADT a pornstar desert. I already cringe when I think of how sweet new posters like Brooke Van Buuren have mere moments before the "when will you do X" and later "why don't you do X" bashers appear.

That would be really ballsy of her to do, but it would probably take even ballsier producers/directors to hire her for mainstream stuff of note while she was still an active performer. I don't mean to sound too insensitive, but a few episodes of a risque HBO show are different than being in a say a movie role. Unless she had a mid-tier billing, I couldn't see her doing much middle of the road press junkits to promote the film (although the potential interviews on Leno, Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel make me grin just imaging them). Maybe I'm wrong.

IMHO, for Sasha to achieve a wider aclaim as a mainstream actress, she would have to be in a role that is completely out of her type cast. Just like Anne Hathaway had to do some dark, edgy stuff to cleanse the palate after all of those "Princess Diaries" type movies.
Sasha would have to be in something out of the box, like an action role, or perhaps something comedic (and not as a stripper, etc.)

there have been a few others, albeit in a lesser capacity. Ron Jeremy for starters. Ginger Lynn comes to mind, as she had a fair amount of dialogue in the (not nearly as bad as its sequels, and strangely directed by the guy who directed Gary Busey in "The Buddy Holly Story") "American Pie: Band Camp" as a coach. Also she had a pretty dramatic role (granted as a hooker/stripper/single mother) in Metallica's gripping "Turn the Page" video.

RE: Above:
Yes, we agree what it is the industry needs. She is a special person.
I am just trying to not be political, and rather, concentrate on her being a free angel on this Earth.
Also, no matter how mature a kid or adult is, I do feel time (age) can be HUGE :)

Completely untrue. Schwarzeneggar is still widely regarded as the legend and pioneer of modern bodybuilding.
The Arnold Classic/Sports Festival has been going for 20 years and is among the largest and most lucrative of its kind
Porn will never be a distant memory. Not with the Internet. Sasha could do nothing but Meryl Streep roles for the next 30 years and the public would still look at her as nothing but a pornstar. Especially given the extreme nature and sheer amount of Sasha's porn scenes
I think you are underestimating the reactionary nature of the American public. Sex is still a taboo and emotional issue in this country. Do you realize how powerful the religious right is here? Bush was elected two terms. Palin for 2012 is a serious possibility. Remember those Congressional hearings because janet jackson exposed one tittie on national TV?
NO ONE is gonna forget Sasha Grey did all that crazy porn.

Apparently America can't handle the mixing of homos with their vampires on True Blood either.

I agree Algaliarept,
If porn & the mainstream (even just on the fringe) are ever going to be somewhat intertwined, it would absolutely take both sides making strides to come together. More so Hollywood than porn; porn doesn't have a problem at all cosying up to Hollywood. But yes, Hollywood producers and directors will need to make a conscious choice to work with porn talent if a co-existance will ever really happen.
I also agree that while a gig on Entourage is really nice, it's really only, as a metaphor, swimming out in the ocean to waist deep. To most everyone, it'll take bigger roles to have pornstars actually swimming in deeper water with Hollywood, so to speak. But remember, one has to start at the beach and then wade out to the ocean to swim in it. That's why Soderbergh and Entourage, for Sasha, are encouraging signs.
I also want to point out to other repliers on this thread that many keep looking at this in a narrow viewpoint-that is, even if she's in mainstream, will she or won't she do porn anymore. I've stated before, like Algaliarept points out here, that it would be a bold achievement to perform in porn while working within mainstream; and I would hope that could happen. But that doesn't need to be the only way she could still represent the industry.
Maybe she could still run her talent agency she was planning. Maybe she could act as a liason while working in mainstream and help other stars get better mainstream gigs, futher blending the two entities. With her pursuits in the music industry, maybe that could be a channel she further introduces to the porn world. The possibilities are endless really. Again, it's my underlying hope she takes on this mentality rather then just speak about the industry as just a phase of her life that she wanted to experiment and excel in.
