I think if you take the prequels as a stand-alone project you can enjoy them and appreciate them. They were far from perfect films but were for the most part enjoyable. I think as an older viewer and fan of the orginals you have to remember that these were essentially films aimed at children, just like the originals; even though they were taken to heart and enjoyed by adults of all ages. However if you take them in context as an inter-linked story with the originals they just don't stand up. Poor plots lacking in continuity combined with weak scripts and poor direction. George Lucas should have stayed well clear and stuck to producing and left the screenplay and direction to someone else. He learned nothing from the experience and we ended up with the same disappointment with 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.' Even Steven Spielberg's more competent direction couldn't save that from being a disappointment. When I went to see it I detached the memory part of my brain and took it for what it was and I have to say I enjoyed it. But it was too little to late, it will never stand up to repeated viewing like the originals. I think George Lucas should step back and take a break from Star Wars. There's still potential for future projects, but like Star Trek, Star Wars needs to be put into the hands of someone younger, more dynamic and with fresh ideas. Having said that I was a little disappointed with the new Star Trek film as well...but that's a moan for another time! Nothing says romance like anal sex. [Link] |
