I am wrestling with the idea of giving the one that I am currently reviewing a 5. Which I probably will.

Just go with what you feel it deserves...

I've reviewed some titles that when I go back and look at them, I wonder if I over rated it.

I am generally not a fan of Chi Chi LaRue's work; I find many of her efforts to be lackluster, formulaic, repetitive and exploitive of her intended audience (although not on the low scale of Sunshine DVD reissues). In my opinion, on the general scale of quality of gay videos, LaRue's best and worst range in the 4 (with a very rare 4.5) down to 2 (with an occasional 1 or 1.5) star rating. But that is my opinion. You need to make up your own mind based on your own impressions.

However, Boot Black is considered to be one of LaRue's better efforts. It was among her first forays into the darker side of gay fetish sex and it is certainly an intriguing effort. I liked the video enough to buy it when I saw it some years ago; however, I haven't watched it in ages now.

In addition to the Farm Boys title (with its marginal bisexual influence) from High Octane (which I would rate a 3.5), I suggest that you chase down a few of the following:

• Hot Type - Herve Handsome / High Octane (4.5+ & his best to date)

• ManWatcher - Kristen Bjorn / Sarava (5+)


• The Road Home - Steven Scarborough / Hot House Entertainment (5)


• Thick as Thieves - Kristen Bjorn / Sarava (5+)

Titan Media, with its Fallen Angel series, holds the title for the best in gay fetish sex. If you have never seen any of the series, you owe it to yourself to make the effort. Although I generally do not like them, I concede that they are all exceptional works of pornographic art and worthy of 5-star ratings.

Giving flicks a final rating is always tough for me, and I've even seen a ton of them to compare against. Here's what I've come up with:

2.5 stars is what I'd call an average porn (obviously) IMHO, a high majority of porn falls in this category. It isn't hard for a flick to get a 2.5 from me... all you really need are decent looking guys who all get the job done. Anything lower than 2.5, and we are just talking about varying levels of disgust. (big puss filled pimples on the ass, missing cumshots, limp dicks, trolls, major razorburn, etc...)

3-3.5 are what I would consider good rentals that have their moments, but generally aren't worth keeping in your collection.

4-4.5 need to have very good looking guys, and a significant number of scenes that contain real chemistry. Worth buying to see these scenes over and over.

5 is a classic that would appeal to darn near everyone (like Isle of Men), or if they are a specialty release, they set the standard for all other flicks in that genre (like Fallen Angel 4). These come around very rarely.

Welcome to the forums, blklthrjkt. I did find the beer spitting scene to be very hot. That's one I definitely shouldn't have liked (my father was alcohol dependent); the fact that I liked it anyway is possibly the best compliment I can give to the performers. I think the main problem with the orgy is that a single cameraman was attempting to capture all the action and it was a little difficult to keep up. Nonetheless, it was a better orgy than I've seen in many hetero movies.

GaySatyr, I will definitely consider checking out some of those titles (especially the Fallen Angel series), and I have given some serious thought to buying Thick as Thieves in the past. Right now, I'm on a tight budget, so I've mostly just been accepting screeners and not making many purchases. I suppose I could rent, but I like to keep copies of all my reviewed DVDs on hand for reference. I will definitely bookmark your list, though, and keep an eye out for sales. I apologize for my ignorance, but the director's voice sounds masculine in the commentary. Is Chi Chi male-to-female transgendered, and does s/he prefer to go by the feminine pronoun? If you or someone could please clarify, I'll be sure to get it right in the review.

If anyone has anything else to add to this thread, please feel free to do so. It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I can submit a review of Boot Black. Although I ultimately make my own decisions on the ratings, I always appreciate hearing what other people think, since it allows me to evaluate the movie in the fairest possible light. (And I know exactly what you mean about overrating DVDs, BigMike. I have reviewed a couple of titles that I would now lower by a half-star, and at least one that I would raise by a half-star. I had seen only about ten adult movies when I started reviewing, and it's all a learning experience.)

S/he was a drag performer in Minneapolis before she got into the gay porn industry. S/he still does drag performances. I'd characterize her style as comedic venom.

As an aside, I'm a romantic with just a trace of a kinky side. In spite of the fact that I am not a macho personality, I tend to be an in-control top who can be versatile if the situation is right (even then, I tend to run the show). I like the idea of bondage, leather and mild spanking but I do not like the gay leather subculture at all. Much of the more intense fetish sex incorporated in the Fallen Angel series is not to my taste. I am not a big fan of tattoos and I do not like piercings, especially genital ones, at all. Water sports, enemas and fisting as sexual play are total turn-offs for me.

Thick as Thieves is an unusually well-scripted, intense love story with a few kinky twists and is my all-time favorite porn video. However, all the titles on my list qualify as exceptionally good gay porn.

And, by the way, I like Idol Country also. It is probably Ryan Idol's best performance. He seems almost human there; whereas, in my opinion, dispite his good looks, his wooden, gay-for-pay attitude spoils his performance in many of his videos. However, Idol does a great job playing a gay priest who jacks off in the confessional in The Road Home (from my list, above).

The sad thing for ADE is that I would spend more with them if they gave percentage-off coupons instead of dollar amounts. It is difficult to limit my spending to within a dollar or two over their coupon cut-off amount so as to maximize my discount - plus, their coupons tend to be one-time-use so I can't place a second order, either. If they would offer a straight 20%-off coupon for orders above $200, I'd place an order with them for $200~250 worth just about every six weeks.

GaySatyr, I know exactly what you're saying. I like to think I'm good at math, and I definitely enjoy maximizing my discounts in every way possible. Adult DVD Empire is not getting an order from me this month mostly because no combination of items on my wish list comes within a few dollars of the minimum order amount for their coupons. And before they went to the one-time use codes, I was inclined to place larger orders with them, since I could partition my orders in such a way to optimize the percentage discount.

I suspect that if I don't order anything from the Empire for a few months, they may try to entice me back by e-mailing another one of their deals to take $15 off a $100 order. Hopefully I can use that in combination with other coupon(s)/rebate(s) to get a heck of a great deal. I can be a very patient and determined person. There's no question in my mind that I will get Thick as Thieves for a reasonable price; it just may take awhile.

I have finished the review I was already working on, so now I'm ready to tackle the second screening and notetaking for Boot Black. The review should be ready for posting in about a week.
