Q2: It varies per person. Most shemales (note that most transsexuals who don't have anything to do with porn dislike being referred as such; when I say shemales I'm only talking about those who're in porn, while there are also other pre-op transsexuals 'living a normal life'.) are in it for the money for the sex change surgery, but there also others who like that lifestyle and stay in the porn- (or escort-) biz for a longer while.
Or to put it in another way: For most shemales it's a tool which they use to achieve a goal, while others really enjoy using it and embrace what's left of their manhood for as long as they want.
OOPS! Didn't mean to insult anyone. I guess a "trannie" is another name for shemale?
I got my information about transsexuals from the mainstream movie Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar with Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes. Good movie.

"Trannie" is a term used sometimes to refer to transvestites (TV) and sometimes to refer to transsexuals (TS). Transvestites are people who dress in the clothes commonly associated with the opposite gender - most usually this is men who dress as women. Transsexuals are people who have undergone medical procedures (hormone treatment or surgery) in order to physically become a member of the opposite sex. Transsexuals may be either male to female (m-to-f) or female to male (f-to-m), though the former is the more preponderant. A shemale is specifically an m-to-f transsexual who has not undergone the surgery to remove the penis and create a vagina. Perhaps we should also mention here intersexed individuals (sometimes called hermaphrodites) who are persons who (usually due to some chromosonal abnormality) cannot be easily fitted neatly into either of the categories 'male' or 'female' (they may, for example, display the external anatomy of one sex while possessing the internal anatomy of the other); they are born to this condition.
To return to the questions in your original post: though I can claim no special knowledge of the matter, it is my feeling that (m-to-f) transsexuals are broadly of two sorts - 1/ those whose primary concern is with physically becoming a woman; 2/ those who wish to be able to live as women and be treated as women in society, for whom the physical transformation is only a means to that end. For transsexuals of group 1, the ultimate aim will be to become as completely physically female as the present state of medical technology will allow and therefore they will be looking to have their genitals surgically remodelled. For transsexuals of group 2, the actual possession of a penis will be a matter of little significance to themselves so long as society treats and responds to them as women.
I will add that I imagine there are also shemales who enjoy the taboo-breaking transgressiveness of their state and take pleasure in the way they defy conventional gender categories and would, therefore, wish to preserve their ambiguous physiological situation.

Btw, I've had conversations with a true transgendered person, and they really dislike the term "trannie". The transgendered don't like to be grouped together with transvestites, because the transgendered are those with trying to recover from a serious medical condition, while transvestites are just dressing in the opposite sex for kicks.
