In mainstream the days of the short star appear to have taken a bit of a kicking recently . In the past they were nearly all on the petite side - Fairbanks Jr , Cagney , Bogey - but the dimensions have increased over time. Just take a look at ; Clint Eastwood , Arnold Schwarzenegger , Tom Hanks , et al . The Cruise looks like an oddity in modern company .

I wonder what psychological effects the early cessation of growth has on a human ? Being 6 foot I never got to experience this , but I imagine that seeing all of your friends continue to grow up around you must be quite hard to take . Maybe it motivates short people to excel in other areas ?

On the same height between genders issue , I'm not convinced that's a runner . It may be apocryphal , but there was a story I heard about some old time movie stars and the tricks that were pulled during filming to make them look taller . Apparently at least one major leading man ( can't remember who right now ) would have his leading lady walk in a specially dug ditch when they were strolling side by side , just so he could appear to be macho and tall . There are similar tales about smaller doorways for the leading males - to fool the audience into thinking the guy was bigger - and all sorts of other cons . If the studios really wanted shorter guys to match up to their dames why would any of this have been necessary ?

On the subject, still... does anyone remember a short-lived starlet named Breezy Lane? She was at one of the CES shows I attended back in the 1980s and she was probably 5' or even less. When we posed for a photo, she said "oooohhh, nice height...." Perhaps it was refreshing to be around a shorter guy after all the taller dudes she was encountering.

As for my preference, any height is fine! I like Gauge and I like Ashley Long and anyone in between.

I'm only 5'8.5" tall and I'm enough taller than Cruise that it was obvious the one time I was in the same room with him -- and he was wearing cowboy boots (which usually have heels considerably taller than those of the loafers I was wearing). Peg me at 5'9" with the loafers and I'd be willing to bet you Cruise was barely 5'7" with his boots.

I was very surprised as I, too, expected him to be rather taller than shorter.
