Although it doesn't look like this is a recent development, but rather a longer lasting trend there are very few male actors in the world of Japanese porn according to this article here. The ratio is roughly 10,000 females actresses to roughly 70 dudes. I like those odds. Maybe it's time for a career change & I should move to Japan? I know japanese porn only superficially, but even if there are very few male performers comparing the number to that of the guys in western porn I think that to say that there are only seventy men is completely unrealistic. And I wonder how it's possible to calculate that number, considering that in american and western porn is very easy to find names, biographies and filmographies on IAFD, EGAFD, data18 and similar sites while in japan most of the time the name of the male actors don't even appear on the movie. The only site with some infos I know is warashi-asian-pornstars that is totally incomplete: even the most famous actors are listed with very few titles and there are a lot of guys that don't appear in the site.

Well, look, in the article I linked they interviewed both a male star & a big time director. I'm sure they have more insider knowledge on the local industry than the average fan does. I also assume it's not that easy to gain info on stars for someone who doesn't even speak or read Japanese, like myself & I'm assuming you. There are other, similar articles on this topic from the last few years, so I think it's pretty safe to assume it's true. Journalists may also be privy to information given to them by industry insiders that they've interviewed, whether it's directors, stars, camera operators, production assistants, producers, distribution companies, etc. Unless there's a vast conspiracy theory going on that I'm unaware of? How do you know that that number is accurate? I knew already that article and I've also saw discussions on other boards and many persons (and I mean those who know japanese porn much better than me) seems to think that that number is unrealistic. I'm not saying that it's not true that there are a lot less performers. But that "70 guys" is invented. Maybe they are 300, maybe 500, I don't know, but 70 is wrong believe me. Take a look. I've seen a lot of guys that are not on this list and even here there are 100 performers listed. And as I've said that site is not evene remotely comparable to IAFD in terms of completeness for anything (just look to the profile of Shimiken (the guy of the article), of the 7500 titles he has done there are less than 50 titles listed.

If you look at the first word you typed, 'shortage,' you found the answer That explains why Asian men, outside of porn produced in Asia, aren't in 'large' demand. On the other hand, Asian women are loved by men the world over. Asian women do just fine in porn, I'd love to see more cute Oriental ladies.
Apparently there is a rise of "herbivore men" in Japan who are just not all that interested in sex which has added to the decline of the industry. Maybe it's time for Western talent to book some flights to Japan.
^ Assuming the ratio was 1:1 (although generally for most orgy scenes I've seen, it's usually about 3 girls for every 2 guys). If there were 150 ppl in said orgy scene, half of that would be 75. So what's wrong with that number? Perhaps they got all the active males. If a dude appears in one or two orgy scenes (as I would assume is the case for some of these orgy movies), I don't think he can really be considered a 'regular' actor, much less a star who is trying to carve out a career, living.
