Sure, several studios still shoot features on film, but you almost never see anything that approaches the quality of Golden Age (pre-1980) porn.
Some of those studios are: Private, Ultimate (Adam & Eve), Wicked, Studio A, Sin City, and Vivid. Keep in mind that even from these studios, features shot on film are an exception, rather than the rule. Because of the expense, they are reserved for the high budget, marquee star features. Almost always, the words "SHOT ON FILM" are plastered all over the packaging: because video is so common, those words are a good marketing differentiator.

Thanks for the info Saki. Some followup questions...
1. You pointed me in the direction of some studios, but what about particular directors? Are there any directors doing "shot on film" late 70's/early 80's style stuff?
2. Also, any specific recommendations?
Basically, I've watched a few classics and been quite impressed. Film brings a certain dimension, a richness, that just does not exist on video. Also, I found the existance of a plot, cinematography and outdoor shots really add a lot to a film. In the standard gonzo stuff of today, most of the scenes are shot indoors and often the people are completely naked from frame one. With the older stuff... you can never be too sure what's going to happen and the outdoor shots add realism... all of which builds anticipation and adds to the excitement. And the sex is less formulaic as well. And the bodies are all real 
Anyway, I'll keep trying out the classic stuff... but I'd be really interested in any modern stuff that shares some of the same qualities of the classics.[Link] |

As far as I know Bliss was not shot on film, but I think it's the kind of film you're looking for - because it is just that, a film.
It's an Antonio Passolini "transmission" - I'd recommend any of his movies. We will hopefully be having him on for a chat next month. Here's his bio:

Takeo: You might like the following directors and films:
Glamour Directors: These tend to be the producers of the highest quality of porn available, but they are generally without a plot in a cinematic sense, but they are much higher class than other "all sex" videos. You won't mistake any of this stuff for shot on video...
Andrew Blake: Wet, and Pin-Ups 2 (both Studio A)
Philip Mond: Zazel (Metro)
Michael Ninn: Ritual, Dark Garden, and Cashmere (all VCA)
Plot Directors: These directors make plot-driven pornos that are considerably above the average fare, although not as nice looking as the stuff the Glam Directors put together...
Paul Thomas: Justine: Nothing to Hide 2 (Metro) and Mobster's Wife (Vivid)
Antonio Passolini: Devil in Miss Jones 6, and Bliss (both VCA)
Brad Armstrong: Conquest and Flashpoint (both Digital Playground)
Kris Kramski: Chloe, and Cape Sin (these Sin City productions are not on DVD however)
And these DVDs are recommended but don't fit into the above categories: Private: Millennium (a great sampler of Private's productions), Insatiable (one of the best adult films ever and a great DVD), Debbie Does Dallas (another classic), and Top 25 Adult Stars of All Time (a compilation of a bunch of all-time great, classic scenes).
