i'm taking Film History classes, and we are learning about the French New WAve scene were a bunch of film critics who wrote and studied American Film, set a movement where they changed the whole style and eventually inspired American directors, like Scorcese and Tarantino.

I was wondering why don't Porn companies start searching for the New Talent in the AdultDVdTalk, especially guys who know there shit, and know what a lot of us porn consumers want.

I presented what I considered to be a solid presentation to an unnames insider last year. My idea was a series called "Everybody's a Critic". I also outlined the fact that I have a degree in film and have worked on Sundance Films and studiied under numerous Emmy and Accademy Award winners.

My suggestion was myself and two other reviewers that I reccomended do two scenes each under participation of a skilled cameraman. For a while this looked like it was going somewhere, but for some reason Studios decided to stick with a great many directors that aren't even in the biz.

I didn't want owndership, just thought it would be a fair trade for credit and expenses (Airfare, food, lodging) Oh well, maybe they'll realize one day that the reason our reviews are popular is because we are dialed into what you all want to see.

AdultDVDTalk as a porn Cahiers du cinéma? I'd never thought of that.

I admit that I have long since been curious to see what a film directed by Skronker or Crucifixio would look like.

I'm actually going to at least start writing something ... my ideas about it are much more shaped by classic underground movies than by "porn as we know it." And would be done specifically with exact performers in mind, exploring ideas that they have, as well ... I mean, I'm into the Bunuel/Hitchcock/Lynch/"Persona" type continuum, and also when you look at 70s porn features, they had a lot of surrealism that wasn't forced or overly pronounced.

For instance, I really like a lot of what Jack the Zipper shoots, I just wish you could masturbate to it. So, you know, really artful but also hot sex without the fuss. And LOTS of exteriors and public sex.

I have a full script of actions and settings, and camera positions and so forth. Still have to work some dialog out. But my idea goes too far for American standards, containing rough sex, bondage, fisting, pissing, and stuff not usually found in US titles. If I spoke German or Italian, I would shop my idea around there.

I actually wrote that script because I was bored and I wanted to see something different, hell, I haven't even looked at in 5 years, might've already been done. I do one day wish to direct, star in or at least compose some porn, when it happens it'll be great, if it doesn't, it doesn't, I won't lose much sleep.

It just seems my ideas are pretty much obscene in all 50 states. Even my idea for a tranny series, and the idea I have for a gay series might be further than any US studio will want to go.

why do americans think it is so bright to know godard movies???
like "you know, i looooved le mépris of godard blah blah blah..."
bullshit.
the French new wave sucks.
Godard, rohmer, rivette, resnais were just pseudo-intellectual socialist critics writing in a stupid paper les cahiers du cinéma.
at school, in France, i had to work and analyse their work.
i had nausea watching at their movies.

but Gaspard Noe Rules.

Yeah, he's a cool guy. This drunk puked in the seat next to me at a screening of "Salo" he curated, and they kicked him out. But Gaspar didn't care and sat down in the nasty seat. Even when we told him.

You seem to be generalizing about nouvelle vague. Godard was explicitly political. I never got that Rohmer was some kind of Maoist. And Rivette, for me, is a magic realist. They are all really different. Maybe you skipped class too often?

How do you feel about Phillipe Garrel? Jean Eustache?

Because fans would want to make movies they like, not make as much money as possible with as little time/effort expenditure as possible. ADT reviewers make their living doing other things. ADT has a means of marketing the product that does not necessarily include traditional distribution.

Taking Noé's oeuvre into account I take it was his drunkenness which caused him to throw up, instead of Salo's acts of perversion shown on the screen, right? Funny story, by the way.

I have yet to write an actual review of anything. I've done a fuck of a lot of complaining and bitching on ADT, though. But the irony of the fact that I probably couldn't direct anything even halfway watchable is not lost on me. I know what I like to see when I see it. I know what makes good porn. I know what I hate. But put me in the spotlight and I couldn't do jack shit. Most porn directors do a better job than most of their critics could ever hope to do. We just try to offer constructive criticism. It just gets out of hand sometimes (at least when I try to do it).

A good start.
Pluses and minuses both.

Some of the very best and now most recognizable music of the ninteenth century was written by men who were not professional composers.

On the other hand, doing anything well take both time and effort, and even a small movie is a considerably larger undertaking than writting a review. One of the wisest things anyone ever told me was "No matter how much you love your job, they still have to show up."

Anyone's first outing would likely be a learning experience. As would their second and probably their third. It would take a tenacious person to keep taking time off of work to try again, especially if they were not getting paid, and especially not if they're having to come up with there own budget.

Not saying that person doesn't exist, only that that sort of tencity is uncommon.

This, in my opinion, is a tremendous untapped resource.

I couldn't agree with TonyC more. Economics dictates what I must do as a director versus what I would like to do, and don't have the budget to do. I have always had to work on restricted budgets. But that doesn't mean you have to produce schlock.

And to Steph, you painted producers/directors with a broad brush. I want people to know, that some of us have never, and will never take the easy way out. I for one put my heart and soul into everything I do and I would like to think it shows. I hold myself to a high standard every time I shoot and edit a project. I might not be a household name on forums such as these. But I will say this frankly and honestly... my productions get selected for Cable PPV, satellite and hotels venues over many other well known companies. Why? According to the buyers ... We have consistent quality and professionalism. The brokers tell me they are tired of getting production screeners that look like amateur video.

Money has never motivated me or never will. I have a passion for film making and sex. I have combined the two with very specific personal goals in mind. Stay tuned...

The drunk was evicted between Noe's film and Pasolini's. So we began watching "Salo" with the aroma of puke in our noses. Kind of appropo, I suppose. I'm just glad it wasn't shit ...

The drunk has tourette's too, which was awesome. he was semi-heckling Noe during the Q&A.

As for ADT porn, the only way I'd imagine doing it myself is with alternate marketing, and it would certainly be more of a hybrid of the erotic/sexual/graphic and an indie flick/video art piece.

I'm not saying that PP's idea is a bad one at all.
But for me personally, I'm a MUCH better producer than director. I can look at a movie and be able to critique the hell out of it.
But I'm not a better director than the people I'm critiquing.

I don't think anybody should be hired to do anything that they're not capable of pulling off. I'm not saying that there aren't reviewers capable of directing quality product but the simple fact that a person reviews some smut doesn't properly equip them to create it. I'd give it a shot though.

I don't subscribe to the belief that reviewers would be good directors. (They might be good editors though.) A good reviewer may have a very keen eye and feel for what's hot and what's not and whether it brings the heat in a finished product. I think there's a huge leap of skill and creativity between the day on the set to the packaged product that would be hard for most people (including critics) to envision. I know that the few days I've spent on sets left me wondering how the hell a movie could be successfully strewn together from the controlled chaos over the course of the day. (No shows, meltdowns, pissed off neighbors, etc. don't help the creative process.)

However, I think some of our reviewers could be some of the best Q/A people in the business. If I owned a production company I'd contact a few of them and actually pay them as a contractor/employee to review a movie as a DVD-R before masters are created and sent off for duplication. (Assuming the studio doesn't distribute their product on DVD-R .) Get them involved early as a separate set of eyes that aren't caught up in the day-to-day of the office and production schedule. I'm not advocating paying reviewers for good reviews, that wouldn't be very helpful. I'd want to know everything that's wrong with my product before it's released to manufacturing so I'd have a chance to correct things.

good reviewers would make good editors, at best. just as good literary critics would make good editors, and not good writers.

The best pornographers and performers are bigger fanboy=fangirls/pervs/strokers than almost anyone on ADT. They are sure the most fun ones to talk to in LA, and imbibe with, perv out with ... I wish we could do a porno version of that Dinner for Five show on IFC. I'd be happy to host.

Van Styles was just a kid with a skateboard until he taught Video Team Ceo's son how to skate. Christian asked him if he could shoot and van said he'd try.

How that for man off the street. The thing about shooting, you either have it or you don't, and a lot of industry people don't. Hell, look at Jules's story, he was a guy working in an East Coast video store.

When you do things the same way, you get the same results. Porns biggest leaps have come from people steeping out of the box.

Just out of curiosity how many five star classics were directed by Gene Siskel, Roger Ebert, Peter Travis, Rex Reed, and Gene Shalit? The Russ Meyer stuff that Ebert had a hand in are not five star classics.

Not sure about directing per se but I have good ideas on what I'd like to see in scenes so far as set ups, pairings-- this is real crucial to have girls who work well together as I'd prefer doing g/g probably to start, pacing is important to how the scene progresses. I mentioned in another thread that I've now been on several sets and at least have a basic idea of what goes on but of course I wasn't the one "in charge" so I wasn't feeling any of the pressure to get the scene in.

The areas I would be most concerned about are lighting and again chemistry between the performers. The shooting part I feel I could learn faster than anything though the actual camera itself and all it can do is something I'd need a lot of help with but just holding it and recording well that's not so hard. Would I want to try this someday if the opportunity arose, yeah I'd strongly consider it. The biggest thing I see wrong with the genre I'm most interested in is the over emphasis on toys and the non-emphasis on the more passionate areas. Perhaps the marketplace now isn't conducive to having the type of g/g porn I would want to shoot but I'd sure like to try and see if this is wrong. I think the Viv Thomas stuff probably does pretty well there in the UK and I know it must sell good over here and for the prices people pay to get the dvds over here someone's making money otherwise they wouldn't continue to see them. Well that's my take anyway, if not a director then someone who puts the scenes together could be a job I'd like doing having watched a lot now and I don't see myself slowing down watching in the future so the new talent hopefully I'll be keeping up with! Ok I should go back to sleep now, lol.

90% of the game is ideas and casting ... you don't have to be a skilled camera guy to make good porn, you just need a sexy girl who acts lively. Given the zillions of girls who pursue porno gigs every day in POrn Valley, the chances of coming across a really hot babe are reasonably high. The problem is that no one -- hardly anyone -- has any real creative ideas for them. There's no financial incentive for Mike John or Joey Silvera to do some of the things they do, or make the time and energy to do them, but that's how they roll, and why they are for me two of the best working long and consistently and still very inventively as directors ... They are embedded in "the system," but always make it fresh anyway ... Maybe what someone outside that system,as a fan-head, could do is rethink all its parameters and come up with something radically fun. But in the end, hot girl and focused shooting ... you get the same results for $500 as for $5,000.

ehhh..It is true. I think thats one of the most frutrating things about "Gonzo" porn, is that sometimes an auto-iris, auto focus, no lights shot comes out hotter than say something done by RobbieD and Quasar(2 of the best).

Its all about how the film stirs your emotions, and whether or not you want to whip your dick out and stroke furiosly...OVER AND OVER...And believe me, my dick does not really have a bias regarding F Stops and Grey Scales..

That's like saying the average person doesn't care about the production values of a sports telecast as long as it's a good game.

Has porn come to depend on a core audience of hardcore wankers who will put up with nearly anything, as long as their particular visual needs are met? Absolutely, welcome to Squirt in My Blowbang, Vol. 26, 1000 units in the first and only pressing. Find it in the bargin bin in 6 weeks for $6.95

In short, yes.

Obviously it's quite ignorant of me to say production values are not important(when they are), but the reality is that sex is a mysterious thing..

Most times, the sound a particular girl's pussy makes while being fucked doggy is glorious and nut worthy. That is something that all the pre-prod in the world would not be able to prepare for and possibly capture the same way..Thats all Im saying..

Its all about the intentions of the Producer and the Viewer on the other end

I will start by quoting an old saying "Film making is easy, till you try it".

The problem in this Industry lies in the profoundly incorrect thinking, that it is so easy to make a movie that anyone can do it. That is why so much schlock has been produced and released to the public over the years. And still is. Without training or skills in television production, let alone creativity, directorial and organizational skills, you don't stand a chance of making anything other than an expensive amateur home video....

And for those who think you don't need camera skills to make a movie. Oh boy.. Well... tell that to my brokers and buyers. They tell me that bad camera work/production values go right into the trash can when they view screeners. Do we really need any more badly lit motion sickness inducing videos that are so common these days? I really don't know why the paying public doesn't demand more quality with their sex.

As far as the idea of showing your movies to a reviewer for comment before release. I agree totally. I have been doing this for years. I also give them to a group of porn fans who have been supporters and became friends over the years. Believe me they can be brutally honest at times.

I am certainly not trying to be an ass to anyone with my comments. Not at all. But... After being a director in this business for 12 years and learning from my mistakes... and there were many. I speak the truth. And yes I did graduate from a television school with a degree in television electronics.

Tommy, you're right. I was only speaking directly to TC's point - the glut of crappy porn is essentially dictated by traditional porn distribution. It's also dictated by the low standards of the industry all around. No matter how unprofessional someone behaves they still have a job in porn.

I'm not necessarily saying ADT reviewers would make better porn. But take things out of traditional distribution and you will have a more interesting product. The fan element makes for a connection with the audience that someone producing quantity doesn't get.

I think you have this upside-down.

The problem with the industry is that, after a brief golden age when it had access to the same lucrative markets as non-explicit films, it has for thirty years been pushed back out of mainstream revenue channels. That's Penthouse getting chased off the racks at 7/11 twenty years ago, that's the hassles for anyone who sells "adult" dvd face when going to get a merchant account.

Driven out of these markets, the industry had continued to survive by finding new ways to invest less in each production while upping the number of productions, first by shooting on video, then digitial video, then distributing on DVD and now over the internet.

But returns on each outing get smaller and smaller, pushing companies to reduce their investment on each production and up their output. Quality drops, returns drop, pushing companies to reduce their investment in each production and up their output. See a pattern?

Now add $1000 DV cameras, laptop editing, $8 domain registration, and chicks that will suck dick for $250 and every fratboy with hardon is adding his contribution to the world of erotic art. How have most companies responded? Reduce their investment in each production, and up their output, crossing their fingers they'll stumble accross the next niche fetish that will let them move 2,500 units instead of the usual 1500.

In short, the industry has, by and large, forgotten how to making money off mass appeal. DP/A&E gave it a try with Pirates and what did they do? CGI skelatons. Have you seen the trailer for part 2? It's all skelatons? Does DP/A&E really think anyone bought that DVD for the Doom v2.0 animation?

Or maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm the one who doesn't get it.

Maybe Pirates made $10 for everyone one of the $800,000 A&E ponied up for it. (The easiest way to tell will be if they spend more or less on the sequal.)

Maybe every backward ballcap wearing, soul-patched director shooting "content" on his PD-10 is rolling in a BMW and living in a phat crib with 70 inch plasma screens in every room.

Maybe.

I mean that, a 3-minute POV blowjob scene will prompt a viewer to ejaculate as easily as a $100,000 glossy feature ... should be more clear in my statement.

As for camera work, sure ... I prefer what Darkko or Bryan Xin are capable of, the smoothness and the class, but my favorite scene of recent times was shot haphazarfly on a memory stick. It's the action that counts.

However, someone really creative who may not be a pro shooter CAN make great porn with the right performers and a working brain. The best thing about gonzo is it's punk rock. The worst thing about gonzo is it's punk rock.

Another thing to consider.

Once upon a time, a young fellow who had just moved to New York City could make his life a little easier writing a couple dozen pages of one-handed reading each month. IIRC the rate was $12 per double-spaced page.

That market is all but gone. But in it's place there are places like literotica.com that have both a wider range of erotic stories and better written erotic stories as well. Literotica is the triumph of the enthusiastic and sometime talented amateur over the professional hack. The only downside is that now, instead of writing dirty stories, young upstarts in this city are now doing amateur webcam sites, something that's a little harder to leave in your past when you decide it's time to move on to the rest of your life.

Can that happen with erotic films? Well in Pay Day's eyes, it probably already has. He knows what he likes and he knows where to find it. For Pay Day, it's a new golden age of smut!

Not even relevant. these are people who studied literature. Their job is to write. We write reviews because we enjoy the movies and have solid opinions that most want to hear.

I'll let you in on another secret. When you go to the movies and you see the intro (Title Sequence)did you know they hire people to do that. Ironic that the sequence that sets up the entire movie is done by someone who doesn't shoot the film.

I saw that too say this. I met a gentleman names Kyle Cooper (Look him up on imdb) This guy is responsible for some of the best title sequences of the past 15 years, but the single film that he directed SUCKED!

Michael Jordan was a terrible coach and GM. Bing Crosby was a terrible parrent and word on the street is Martha Stewart can weave a blanket, but can't cook a full meal to save her life.

Go fugure. I can't speak for any other reviewer and this isn't solicitation. I've got skills in every aspect of digital audio and video production. It's obvious to me that a great many people in the biz don't have a clue what it takes to produce a solid title. If you ask me, that's why the flood of performers directing has declined, studios waon't back what doesn't sell, and just because a woman takes it in the ass doesn't mean she can embrace "The Rule of Thirds". and before you come back half cocked, that isn't Menage a Tois.

I wouldn't trust an ADT reviewer with a spray can of WD-40 and a vibrating sander. God only knows what use he'd put them to. So, why the hell should anyone trust an ADT reviewer with $25,000 to make a porn flick?

Having read tons of reviews here I would really like to see a lindi made film.
